JugV2 has given me the okay to post some pics of his completed stand. I'm still working out exactly how I'm going to send it to him- its a bit of an odd shape.
Overall I'm pleased with how it turned out (and I hope JugV2 is too!). There were some marks/imperfections in the wood that didn't sand out as well as I hoped, but I don't think it detracts too much from the end result.
From a structural point of view, this stand is better than my original one. I've used a fairly large screw to secure the two bits of wood (pre-drilled and countersunk even!) with a single nail to ensure it doesn't rotate (whereas my original stand just uses two nails- works, but a screw is better).
Anyhow, here's some pics (with my current rotation of gear):
