Hi, Im recently new to the shaving game and have been using a shavette razor for a few months now and have enjoyed a lot. I just got my first straight for Christmas a Golddachs rosewood gift set from shavor shop.
the razor didn't seem to be shave ready outta of the box and I thought it might have been for $400 haha. is that something I should expect?

Nothing is shave ready out of the box / factory, unless the seller says it will be professionally honed prior to delivery.

ok awesome thanks. so to go get it honed would be the first step? because that's what I tried to determine with the staff at shaver shop if it had all ready and they had no idea. so any advice would be most welcome.

Send it to @Mark here in Sydney, will come back as a razor, not just a razor-shaped piece of metal. That said, the Golddachs are a nice piece of hardware.

You will also need a strop for it, just to maintain the edge. You can also buy a Gold Dollar / Gold Monkey off Mark for very little money which has been modified & honed properly, not a bad idea to start with something a little more 'sacrificial' than the Golddachs.

Shaver shop? They wouldn't have a clue.

I believe there's a member on the forum who's very experienced with honing. Or Oz, who lives somewhere up northern NSW. It's not the sort of job you will get done at a local kitchen store that sharpens knives, it's very specialised. Or buy a hunk of expensive stones and learn to hone yourself. Better use a cheap blade to learn though.

You'll also need to strop it pre and post shave, so you'll need one of those too. Straights are too much fuckin work for someone like me. I always advise against starting with one, becasue the cost and learning is just too much trouble for most.

Ok awesome thanks for the advice. I received a a golddach strop with the set and I was thinking that buying a cheaper razor to start with would be a good idea too haha.

Welcome mate!

Straights are not my thing but there are plenty here who know what they are talking about. Good luck!

Welcome @Aaron - just contact @Mark and I am sure he will help you out and give you all the necessary information.

Welcome to the insanity.
Hope your stay is long and mutually beneficial :)

Hey there @Aaron - sounds like a fun new adventure for you. [emoji106]

Just a heads up: for $400 you can buy several excellent vintage straight razors. Quality shaving gear, with history and character. Just ask @Mark when you contact him. Even for $50-80 you can get an excellent vintage str8 that will last you a lifetime.

BTW what shaving soap do you like to use?

I have a few lovely vintage DEs @Aaron - but I still will never let go of the Merkur 38C my wife gave me as my first DE - it is special as I'm sure this razor will be.

I just had my razor honed and bought a vintage japanese razor from @Mark at the same time and like an eager little kid i had my first shave with the japanese his afternoon straight after receiving them in the mail and it was one the most enjoyable shaving experiences i have ever had shaving so i cant thank you enough mark for your help.
i am now completly hooked on straight razor shaving haha.
im currently using green proraso shaving cream would any one be able to recommend a better alternative?
