What did you just listen to?

I listen to quite the variety of music and will often find myself going through a stint in one genre or another for weeks or months at a time.
I tend to find listing what I don't listen to far easier and quicker:
Several artists: Elvis, Hendrix, T Swift, K Perry, R Williams..
A few groups: U2, Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, The Doors..
Most current 'pop' and is just reheated hits of old.
Gospel/religion centric (country excluded).

I spent a good hour tracking down a decent filming of Pagliacci with Pavarotti as I never had the chance to see it live...

I felt the need to go back and give an album I've not heard in a while another spin, this one being War Eternal by Arvh Enemy, and I wasn't overly thrilled with it.

I'm interested to see what you all listen to, I might find something new to add to my ever more confusing playlists.

I have quite a broad range of music to @Nicked.
Ranging from Metal like Motley Crew, Guns and Roses, Metallica, Disturbed and a few others.
I also a fan of the late and great Stevie Ray Vaughan, Queen, Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles and a few more.
At the other end of the spectrum I also listen to classical music I find it very calming.
Luciano Pavarotti's "Nessun Dorma" is incredible.
Today it was "Disturbed" for me.
Cheers,

I've cut my teeth on a lot of those, and many, many more..
Nessun Dorma is one that goes to 11, if you talk or make noise during it, I start it again.. Pav's version is the version, I'll die on that hill.
Queen's been cooked for me, far too much radio thrashing... Radio/media really know how to ruin a good thing.
Eagles are always in need of a play, one of my fathers favorites, along with Pav, ELO and a fistful of classical composers.

This is the last album I listened to:

I'll give this a listen shortly.
I forgot to add Bon Jovi and Bob Seger and the silver Bullet band
Cheers.
Ahh, Jovi.... I still cringe back at the double and triple denim days, yes, still in my wardrobe, granted mothballed....
Bob, doesn't often come on, but does get a little love.
Silver Bullet is now on the list of 'need to check out'.

Keep 'em coming!
Cheers.

This is the last album I listened to:

This form of jazz is on my minimal doses list, but I do appreciate it, just needs the right head space and environment*.
It gave me similar vibes to this (one of my favorite PF tracks):

And this gem from Unsuk Chin:

*Dim to dark room, no distractions, silent other than the music at hand at a comfortable higher volume, a nice glass of scotch and nowhere to be.

Yes, I wasn't expecting you'd actually listen to it. :p

Most of the stuff I like is at the outer bands of what others consider music. Free jazz is quite polarising, which I find odd. It is one of the few genres of music that is genuinely surprising. Most western music is, rhythmically and harmonically, quite predictable (I don't mean that in a disparaging sense as it can be quite enjoyable) whereas a lot of jazz is quite the opposite: it keeps delighting you by confounding the expectations of form and structure. I love it.

I mainly listen to music from the 80's, however for the past couple of years I've been listening to more and more country music. Modern country is nothing like the old chicken kicken tunes from 20 or 30 years ago. My favourite now Chris Stapleton, even the missus has got used to hearing him in the car so she plays him as well when I'm not there.

I must admit, my knee-jerk was 'oh dog, that jazz.... but that's probably as I wasn't expecting it.. you're correct that it's quite polarizing for most, myself included, but I come from a family of music and will push on with most that's 'tried and true' even if it's not my flavour (pop excluded).
I also agree that western is quite predictable, but I have the blessing? curse? of having quite a few non-english/ non-western acts in my rotation, various acts from the Arab areas, Asia/India, Europe... I'm quite open to finding new music, no mater where it's from.

My mother and some of her family drove me nuts as a child with the 'dagnamed country shite'..... decades later, my wife has a vitriol hatred towards it and I've found it one of the more played genres, much to my own downfall :ROFLMAO:.
I find quite a lot of the new country (~80's onwards) is utter trash, however if I'm not listening to it in a country mindset, some of it's alright.
Patsy one of my often played, along with Jim Reeves, Randy Travis and a few others..
Came across this recently and thought it was tacky enough that I'd insist it was the new 'our song' with the wife.... let's see how long I last.

Have a listen to this, it is a fantastic record:

Gotta say, that's far more palatable, gave me groovy 70's cop chase vibes, although it did also give me minor PTSD from the time we thought it would be a good idea to buy a set of bongos for a mate of ours....

Years ago whenever I got the chance, I'd drive with my uncle hauling explosives to the open cut mines in central Queensland, and he listened to old school country. This kind of left me with a hatred of the genre so I've never listened to it since. Then a few years I got into a truck simulator computer game and you could set up online radio stations to listen to as you drove. For a bit of nostalgia (God knows why), I found an online country station in the US and to my disgust, I found that I started to like it as they play modern country. In fact, I'm listening to it at work right now.

I used to drive interstate and found CD's through the day and ABC during the nights was the go.... surprised me too...

As for nostalgia (god knows why), it was the same when my mother passed, I threw on some Anne Murray for the sake of it.... I detested her in my youth, but she gets more air than I feel she deserves these days.... can't help these things....
I swore to a mate decades ago, 'If I ever buy a Telecaster, you know I've given up on life..' ... I type this looking at it sitting in its case to my left..

Edit: As I hit send, Spotify threw I'll Never Find Another You - The Seekers at me.... that hits home hard, damn you nostalgia....

Some music royalty there. Dave Holland is one of those examples of jazz bass keeping you young. He's played with just about everybody who's anybody, including Miles Davis, John McLaughlin, Kenny Wheeler, and the list goes on.

I started out as a classical musician (violin and double-bass, graduated from Royal College of Music) but also branched out into jazz until arthritis killed the career stone dead. I don't go in for popular music in a big way, but I do listen to all sorts. I'm a heavy J.S. Bach user (I was once asked why I had 4 recordings of the Cello Suites on my old iPod, and all I could say was that there wasn't enough space for the other 5).

Right now, I'm listening to Arooj Aftab Vulture Prince

Dream Theatre just got added to my list of CDs to buy. My list is quite long.
I've stopped buying CDs. I now just download everything in FLAC format and load it on to a USB stick plugged into a comparatively cheap Android media box. (And my phone, my tablet, etc. Protection in case a bushfire decides to Marie Kondo our lives.) That way, the only hi-fi components I need are the amplifier and speakers.

It took me a LONG time to encode my CD collection, and even more to get all the metadata tags right (I still come across anomalies from time to time) but it was worth it. My CDs are now in several large plastic tubs stowed under the spare beds, and no longer take up living space.

Some solid names indeed.

You had me at double-bass. I started guitar early on and dropped it as I was too head strong for the BS learning stuff and demanded I learn the good songs (stupid children never learn).... I then picked up and dropped trumpet as neither the neighbours, nor my parents could deal with it, to be honest, it wasn't oboe or sax, so I wasn't overly keen either.
Years later I picked up guitar again and wasted many years spending too much time on it thinking it would provide, when it does nothing more than remind me that I don't have a lot of time for it these days.

J.S. Bach in definitely in my standard rotation, my father and grandmother were classically trained and that bled heavily into my childhood influences... Plus, you're hard pressed to find heavier tracks than the masters hundreds of years ago.

Thank you for Arooj Aftab, too.... that's gone straight into the rotation, great blend.

Be careful there mate, DT is a slippery slope... I got into them and then got sick of them.. something about too much of a good thing, and same sameness.
Small doses and mix it up. :ROFLMAO:

I'm right there with you, although it's been quite a while since I last added anything as money's been tighter than I'd like and life prioritizes it goes elsewhere. 36TB of media (not just music) currently, however I have a couple of cases of drives I need to try and salvage, somewhere in the range of another 20ish TB, although there's quite a bit of other media on those.

I currently have a media server/media streamer and the Library can be a little, stupid.... The file naming convention is rather stringent, however the metadata scrapers can still 'guess' some things.... I transferred a huge amount of things from one drive to another and had to re-add them to the library, random Korean drama here, Tamil series there, etc.... not sure how it figured to mark them as such, but it took a while to get them all spotted and correctly labeled.
