Not a great one today:

Valobra stick
Whipped Dog Black Badger
Merkur 34C
Gillette Super Thin

Felt like I was waxing not shaving. It just pulled at the hair.

I managed two and a half passes before I had to bail on the blade.

I finished off with a SE (first thing handy). I call it the reverse TM lol

Cleaned up with some Witch Hazel and Coral Skin Food (sample)

Might have to go back to a more trusted blade tomorrow :/

Ouch......you have to hate being forced to change the blade out mid-shave. I think everyone's had to do it once or twice and it's just not fun....inevitably from the first few strokes you're thinking,"Ok this sucks, I'll never use this blade again but lets just get through this".....which ends up morphing into,"Bugger this, can't take anymore of this horrid blade!!!"

Fumbling around with lather on your hands, trying to unwrap another blade and put it in whilst cursing......I think thats why I've got quite a few 'low level' branded blades (Racer, Laser, Zorrik, Vidyuk, Merkur) that I've just NEVER tried as the risk vs reward with them doesn't add up.
 
Broke out of my 34C obsession and ran the ex-Juggy EJ DE86(???) through its paces this morning with a simple 2 pass.

Haven't used Astra SP for ages as I swore them off for being overly sharp jamtin lids a while back. Pretty decent first shave as usual with these ones although now a few hours later I can feel my usual slight astra-angst developing on the jaw. Don't think I will press my luck to shave #2

The EJ has potential. Very nicely crafted bit of kit. I had a few magic moments when I nailed the angle and some usual first drive jitters where I drifted. I will pop a PSS in it next and see what I think with a blade I get along with smashingly. Then will be the benchmark Derby test.

I was a little worried the EJ would get slippery to handle in-shave but it seemed to be easy to grip despite it's glossy handle. Nice!

2nd day with the Uber Gill plats. Still buttery smooth, but pushed my luck and went for a 3 pass, just cos it shaves so nice. Got away with it mostly, but a little sore spot. All user error though, a 3rd pass really wasn't needed.

Good to hear the result SYD.

I had the same concerns as you - the handle once wet was a concern with no knurling, but it seemed to go ok. I did have to dry the handle sometimes but if you're making a lather that sloppy then you should fix that.

My go-to blades in that were the Voskhod and the Gillette Blacks.

If you have none of those let me know ans I can flick you a pack of each to try.

My main gripe was the weight. If they had made it slightly top heavier it would have been brilliant IMO.

Ahh...you like your razors the way I like my women!

I have some vokshods via Mark, so I will try them out for sure. I Haven't tried the G.Blacks before (Let's see if I can get that lingo to take :P :P ) always keen to try something new.
 
2nd shave with a personna red in the ss. I am not liking this blade at all any more. It just won't do the job without too much effort and risk.

Yep pretty much sums up what it was like.

Kind of like my first girlfriend ..... You think you can salvage it (perseverance), you blame yourself (lather), but in the end you just give up and switch out for a more modern (blade).

I just need to find a solid blade so I can make a 100+ purchase!!!!!!!
 
Tried the new plastic Simplex army issue razor that SYD gave me the other day. I let it jump the queue ahead of a pre-loaded Clog Pruf. It's a new toy so that otherwise baffling action is understandable.

Loaded it with a Shark.

What can I say....felt really mild like a Tech until I flipped the razor and then it felt really aggro. Yeah, the blade doesn't center properly. In the end it was hard work but I got a good shave out of it. If I was on a desert island with nothing else to choose from I'd still be happy with it but alas I don't (live on a desert island that is). Pity really as I really liked the lightness of it and boy is this thing light. You feel nothing between your hand and the edge of the blade. The razor itself doesn't seem to contribute at all and is only a device for holding a blade. In this case unfortunately incorrectly.

I always thought a bit of heft to a razor was a good thing, so that gravity shaved you rather than you scraping (and in my case pushing too hard).

Is a bit. I ultimately really like simple, cheap shaving things. All this stuff like Gold Plated Aristocrats, High Mountain Manchurian Badger Brushes, Artisan Soaps made from the milk of grain fed goats and DE blades sharpened on the inner thighs of Numibian virgin slave girls is interesting but seems a bit over indulgent at times.

The razor looks really good. Menacingly black with two little strips of shiney blade edge visible on the sides. Unfortuntely a bit more visible on one side than the other.

Yeah, there is a general opinion that heft is good but I find it just different. And I prefer, with DE shaving at least, lightweight shaving. You really are using the tips of your fingers and it feels like you've got complete control. Unlike using for instance a long handled super where I find it's more a matter of plonking it in the right spot and guiding it with, across or against the grain and just hoping that it does the right thing. The heads of those TTOs are also a bit cumbersome I think. You don't really have the same freedom to adjust the angle. It's either cutting hair or scooping lather. Lovely bits of engineering mind you but I really haven't found one I prefer over a simple three piece.

It's the angle..try different angles and you should get a better result.
