Allright, I'll begrudingly (because I prefer to have reason to take the piss) admit that Drubbing was (to a small extent) right in his assessment of MWF. It isn't the be all and end all of soaps. It makes a decent lather, has a nice scent but beyond that.....
 
What else do you expect it to do?
It lathers OK, the price is decent, due to the lanolin it lubricates well and doesn't dry the skin like other soaps, the scent is not offensive.
What else is it supposed to do? Whisper sweet nothings or make you a coffee?
What's better?
As you know I only have MWF, tabac, eshave, proraso and T&H.
I use MWF and eshave most of the time. Proraso when the weather is hot and tabac when the weather is cold.

Not wanting to start a lather war, but my experience is hugely underwhelming. Which is odd, given we like a lot of the same products and probably lather under the same water conditions.

I expect a few things from a soap to use it regularly, and MWF fails on all of them for me.

I expect it to lather easily - MWF has form as a finicky latherer, even among lather nerds. I don't like that I have to work hard to get it slick. It gets foamy, airy and 'crispy' far too easily. It's easy to end up with a lather I just don't feel confident shaving with. It also starts to dry out on my face mid pass no matter how wet I get it - and I'm not slow. No other soap has ever done this.

I expect plenty of lather - it doesn't provide it.

I expect a good to great shave, depending on how I rate the product. Proraso I find good, Tabac I find great. MWF I find poorer than Proraso to shave with.

It moisturises far better than anything else I've tried. Skin really does feel great after using it. But this by itself is useless if it can't do the others.

What's better? For ease of use, just about any other soap I've tried.
For shaving? Tabac, Speick, Proraso, P160, Cella and a few others I've tried.
 
Proraso I find not good enough in the skin protection front.
Tabac really foams up and is as annoying, edit: like it exists between a thick paste and a watery foam, hard to get in between) as what you report MWF to be, plus really dries the skin out, and the scent just hangs around your face all day, hence I don't use it on warm days when I might be sweating a bit.

Also if you use it as a stick you discover that it's incredibly hard. Almost like sandpaper on your face. I'm not surprised people have a hard time with it. I still like it and have it in the rotation but after a couple of uses it's gone from being potentially a favorite to an also ran. I'm liking the scent. Speick's still on top.
 
After a month or so of use I'm gradually starting to really like MWF. It's just more work to get enough product loaded on to my face. Once that's done I'd say it's one of the best. Up there with dare I say it Speick and possibly even Tabac.
 
While I'm not into the the often silly Superlather thing (I mean really, what possible benefit is there to making lather from Proraso cream + soap?), I did try an MWF/Speick combo.

I idea was the fussiness of the MWF would be trounced by the Speick and I'd get the best of both; great lather with greater moisturising. Well, first attempt was a waste of time. The MWF only dragged down the quality of Speick's lather.

I've got the odd fussy brush, I don't need soap giving me the shits too...
 
Not to derail the thread but is lathering with both soap and cream an actual thing?
 
Yes they call it superlather. Don't understand why two products that seperately lather nicely would suddenly produce super lather when thrown together but there you go. I think it's for those who have problems creating lather from hard soaps. Add a bit of cream to your brush and everything works. It's super. It's superlather
 
People never cease to amaze me.

I bet someone started that as a gag rumour, and people have run with it.

I'm no rocket scientologist but come on, that concept is just dumb.
 
I haven't tried it yet. You'd think going by the lengthy ingredient list of most soaps that adding them together or adding glycerin wouldn't make diddly squat difference. I'm sure it doesn't.

I'm with Pj (for once). If you can't lather soap and you add cream, you've got a lather of cream....
 
I've heard of people grating soaps in to a tub of cream to get a tub of soap/cream. A scream or a croap? It's all a bit desperate.

Beyond that it's moisturizing properties are really what's made it so poular.

It's glide, protection and closeness of shave are as good as most.

It can be difficult to lather depending on if you wet the puk first and use a boar brush. ( no hot water only warm.) It's also fussy re water pH and water mineral content so many use distilled water.

The lanolin( in suficent quantity) is believd to be the magic ingredient in MWF that nourishes and moisturises the skin and many report not needing to use a balm or moisturizer after shaving.
 
Since that post I've become an avid fan of MWF. Still not quite as good as Tabac or Speick I don't think but a great soap with a great scent. I'd be happy if it was my only soap.
