Ahh the famous Thomas Method.

Known by many, mastered by few.

A mark of the true gentlemen.

The ultimate shaving method combining SE and DE in a perfect synergy.

Known and acclaimed world-wide - but unappreciated here, as the words of Christ are echoed:

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.” He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith. - Mark 6:4-6

Don't worry GT - I feel your pain

Thanks Mark but I have been married to a Geordie lass for over 20 years - these guys are amateurs at flinging slings and arrows :)

Makes sense now :)

Thank you.

As for the inventor, has he not heard of a mirror ?

You shave with a mirror? I find I cannot break the edges quite fine enough to give a good close shave but then to each his own. :)

But they don't provide the 'side benefits' of the Geordie lass that I'm sure makes up for it!

At least I think that they don't provide those benefits ....

Fixed that for you. Jesus indeed! One is proclaiming a world renowned shaving method and the other is now an original disciple.

Yesterday I spent a little time un pinning and then Re pinning my all stainless straight. Now has loverly wooden scales and the balance is fixed!!! Anyone out there with the all stainless Dovo i recommend change the scales!!! Took it to the hones, stropped it and then a lovery close and smooth shave :)

Dovo no longer all stainless,
Cade soap in a bowl

That's where I'm going wrong ?
No wonder I draw blood !

Reckon I've a better chance using obsidian in lieu of the mirror ?

Used a new to me eBay str8 this morning, after a quick honing.
S. PEARSON & Co. SHEFFIELD
Use it with Mem Shave Cream.
Only time for a quick 3 pass shave, but nice.

Maybe chat up Mark1966 (although it appears he can be a little fickle) he must have one of those new fangled (at least I suspect to you) things called razors and he may let you purchase one of his (from the dross collection only). Try that with a razor blade (see RM) and your days of blood and bits of skin hanging off your face could be over. (Now aren't you glad you joined with all us helpful people this board).

Fresh Spoiler into the Pureman OC Proto and lathered up with the old Proraso and my original Muhle badger.

Great shave, really felt good afterwards.

All same as last time - boring but sure is fun. Might lash out and try a new soap or cream next time (I know I know I am such a radical):)

Harmonie "For Barbers Use" Straight Razor
Dixie "Blue steel" Straight Razor
Merkur 34C
Schlicky (who can remember these things - yonkers)
Palmy Gut 2,2
Schemogue 830
Alum
ASB

Very rusty on the straights. Made me realise has lazy my technique has become with the DE with quality blades, they just cut hair sooooo easily. A couple of WTG on the straights and then did the goatee and moustache + clean up with the DE.

Slowly does it :)

Omega pure badger

How do you like that Omega badger Ybbor? An Italian supermarket not far from me is selling them for 30-40 bucks each, and every time I go there, I feel tempted.

SYD, do you switch hands to do each side of your face with the straights? That's one thing that keeps me from hunting down a cheap one. I could never get used to shaving my neck with my left hand, it just felt dangerous and uncomfortable.

I actually feel really comfortable shaving my entire neck with my right hand. I can get good visibility for all my strokes.

I am trying to bring the left hand into the passes above the jawline though. I'm not sure how successful I will be TBH.

I don't think being ambidextrous is really necessary to "git 'er done". I just have to remember to not do my thinking with blade on face while I remember my contortions

Hmm, interesting! With my shavette, I always struggle to maintain a consistent angle with my blade around the lower right half of my neck. Contortion must be the key, but that'll send me to the hospital. Don't encourage me, I'm too young to die in a bathroom.

So you can't shave and think at the same time?

That would ruin it! Serenity is the point, and a little Rory Gallagher appreciation.

So you can't shave and think at the same time?

Pretty much the only time you cut yourself with a straight is when the blade is on your face and you aren't making a shaving stroke. Barring poor spatial awareness and depth perception. You swiftly work out just how large your ears and nose really are!

I haven't used a shavette Mong but all accounts point to it being a slightly different technique between straight razors and shavettes. I have often heard straights being described as more forgiving, maybe that lets me get away with something a shavette would bite on?

I have two Omega badger brushes:

I like the Knott thickness of the wooden one, however the black one is softer on the face. I rate both as pretty good but would buy the wooden one in preference. I have a Simpson chubby thats awsome but dries to slowly for humid cairns queensland.

I found to develop my straight shaving i shaved with a de right hand right side and left hand left side for a month before trying the straights again.

I have straights and shavetts. I like how the shavetts cut being sharper. But a straight is smoother if honed and stropped well. Shavetts leave my skin feeling similar to de shaves, but a bit closer.

I think and advantage to straights is that the hairs are less sharp as they grow out. Feels smoother than de shavetts or 5blades.

It's getting so cold here....Had my thermostat turned down as low as it would go! The furnace just turned on!! It's winter!! Didn't want to turn on the Heat until at least the 15th!! But we've had snow for the last couple of days and its about -3C outside right now!
Thinking about not shaving until this afternoon! Then the Gold Dollar that I've been working on.
