First straight razor shave! A couple of months ago I as lucky enough to pick up a beautiful Bengall straight, in almost pristine condition. I sent it to Dion at DC Blades ( @Substance) and it was returned in no time after a hone by the master. I mentioned to Dion I was thinking about getting a cheap Gold Dollar to practice stropping and honing on, so that I wouldn't ruin the edge he had put on the Bengall but by the time he replied advising against that idea I had gone ahead and ordered it. Dion also advised to get a 12K hone to put a proper edge on my razors, and although the GD was allegedly honed to 8K and would shave arm hairs (not tree top) I decided to use it for my first straight shave. It was immediately apparent even to this beginner that the edge needed work; it felt more like I was scraping the whiskers off rather than cutting them. In any case, I kept at it, with my initial plan being to just do my cheeks. That went OK, so I chipped away at my chin for a while and was surprised that I could get at most of it. The areas I couldn't get at were my left sideburn area and neck. I must have looked like I was arm wrestling myself at some stages... :) I finally got at least 80% of my face covered albeit patchy in places. I'm sure that when I steel myself to take the Bengall to my face it will actually be easier and less risky than todays effort. Eventually I called it quits and tidied up with the Yintal to end up with a DFS and very happy with that. No cuts! :)

Welcome to the gentlemanly art of SR shaving. It only gets better.

If you can persevere to about 30 daily SR shave, you will be asking yourself why you didn't start in your teens.

Congratulations - sometimes the first steps are the bravest
Don't be too scared of the expertly honed edge from Dion but do be cautious and it will protect you
When I started I did just cheeks for the first dozen shaves to get the blade angle correct and used to holding the razor, before attempting neck, then left the goatee alone for another couple of months until I had confidence in my technique. Now I easily complete 2 x passes WTG for the best shave of the week.

I mistook razor burn as a burr earlier in the week and did not max out the P-30 as a result.
It was only when I noticed my neck was covered in angry red pimples yesterday with a new blade (Kai Pink) that I realised it was razor burn or more likely an allergic reaction to soap/aftershave
This balmy tropical weather it does not take much to irritate skin and mood :)
Will keep to the witch hazels until build up is over

Soap: Chisled Face Summer Storm - I love this scent,to me it smells just like wet grass.
Razor: Razzi Shavette. I was given this to try by Dave at The Wet Shaving Co. Here I was thinking it would be just like using a Kamisori. Nope, it's nothing like it. It actually takes a bit to master the right angle but once you get used to it, it's a lot of fun to use. It also gives a nice clean shave.
Blade: Falcon. I'm not sure what to think of these blades. I need to use them a bit more, but they were free from VSOD so I can't complain.
Post-shave: Witch Hazel concoction as recommended by SpeedyPC. Thanks mate, I like it 👍

Fresh from using DRH all week, I'm spending the weekend with another milled soap, as the O&C just feels and smells so nice. I'm probably going to be exploring a lot more of these hard soaps next year, they work really well for me.
