My second razor - which adjustable?

Hey fellas,

Getting a little bored listing the Edwin Jagger DE89 on my Shave of the Day. Thinking of getting a second razor, so would be keen for your advice.

I'm looking for something different to the DE89 - I don't mean something that is going to act like a potato peeler on my face but, you know, something that offers variety. …and no I am not ready for a straight or single just yet.

My thinking is an adjustable, is this reasonable thinking? If so, any merit in going vintage here? I mean a Merkur Futur is probably sensible but boring….Initial thinking is something like a Gillette Super or Slim Adjustable.

How far off track am I?

Again still a newbie, albeit an adventurous one.

Your wisdom and experience appreciated.

I have a few adjustable. Slim and fat. Future and vision. Futur is my fav! But a rodhium plated slim would be a nice exotic second !!!

Nothing wrong with your intentions there. If nothing else, adjustables are amazing bits of engineering. Got a long handled super adjustable myself. Don't particularly get on with it but that's a personal thing I guess. I prefer three piece razors because the head is just so much smaller/thinner and I feel you have more control. There are many who swear by Fat Boys, Slims, Super Adjustables etc. Give it a try. Why not! Personally I'd go vintage as design wise there's nothing really new in shaving world.

A slim is as good as anything to try. Those 60s Gillettes were engineered to last and much superior to anything made today. They are pretty mild though, and a Futur or Progress will be a bit more aggressive right up to potato peeler.

I'm sure I could find something vintage and adjustable to sell you - probably a Fatboy.

Every MAN needs a Fatboy .....

Mate if you reckon a Fatboy is a good introduction, then this boy looks forward to your PM. (y)

Slim would be my pick - although the Fatboy is a little more aggressive, the longer handle of the slim afford more control.

I've said it many times, but a Fatboy or Slim always brings out the best in any blade. There's no reason to shave with anything else.

I'm probably going to send off both a Slim and a Fatboy to be cleaned up and replated in Rhodium. Should last my lifetime.

.
I mwill second this opinion - I found the Fatboy to be a little less maneuverable than the Slim - the longer handle on the Slm gives better grip and just a much nicer "feel" than the fatboy.

Where do you get this done?

There's a couple of local places locally who can do this for you. @Mark1966 has some contacts I am sure. I think there was some info over YKW about this but were likely in the GSL group section which is now gone.

Otherwise, there are specialist places overseas that will do it for you. You do want a decent depth of plating on it, and RazorEmporium does a good job in this regard. The issue is that it is reasonably expensive AND you need to pay for post over and back, however they know what they are doing and specialise in razors. You get back a fully restored item.

It might be better to pick up a cheap one on eBay and get it delivered directly to them, much like certain people here do with old Simpsons Butterscotch handles getting sent directly to the Isle of Man.

The Aussie Replaters mentioned YKW are collected here

RE has a bad reputation YKW and I've used them some time ago and discovered why. Their QC was crap with stuff sent back to me not done properly and having to be sent back for a PROPER job. They do seem to have lifted their game but I've not tried them lately. Restored Razors in the UK gets a consistently good report from people and he is active YKW talking about restoration and replating issues - giving good advice to people on the process and its limitations.

Yes I've done this with razors and brushes. Just beware that you might find yourself in a fight between the eBay seller and the plater about condition ...

Thanks Mark & Monster
Sorry (not really) to hijack Stills' thread - I was confident on picking up a Hoffritz Slant razor on eBay that was ripe for replating but the price rocketed in the last 2 minutes. If I ever pick one of these up I'll keep razor emporium and restored razors in mind. Sorry Stills.

Funny not - scared the crap out of me - My first thought was "Bugger I'm dead and the Jesus Freaks were right". :)

Maybe that is a thought you should ponder more often mate - especially at your age ;)

Don't think so - I was expelled from Sunday School at the age of 9 for arguing in class and that was the end of my association with any form of religion. But I still like shaving :)

I've done a little more digging on the internets and think a Slim is probably better suited to my skill-level. But a Fatboy will come…

Man these things don't come cheap!

I went once and got kicked out :)

FTFY. The more I get to know you the more I'm convinced you would have been diagnosed with what is now known as ODD. Oppositional defiance disorder. My wife's a teacher. Every year she comes home with yet another sexy term for what is basically a kid with a mind of its own.
