I had a Cold Steel Tanto knife a few years back. Amazing edge, wonderful blade. Then a mate borrowed it... I miss that knife.

Still don't have an allocation yet, how long did yours take?

We don't have solar, but now the electricity price rises are going through we are definitely looking at a full setup - oversized panels, big battery etc. I am even considering upgrading to 3-phase for additional grid export limit. We definitely want enough to charge a car at home in the future... even if just a PHEV with a decent amount of battery capacity.

The Sigenergy systems look amazing, full house backup, 3-phase capable, DC car chargers, full VPP with some proper smarts about them. Opens the door to actually making money pushing either overnight controlled load charge or self-production exported back to the grid (y)

Our car was a very low mileage 2nd hand 2021 model (with the longer range battery) which we got in 2022. I never entertained the idea of getting a hybrid, as I didn't like the of having the dead weight of an infernal combustion engine to drag around everywhere and cost us money in maintenance.

Our solar setup was non-negotiable from the outset, as we'd need millions of dollars for poles and wires to grid connect. Plus the fact that Tasmania, despite having had essentially free hydro power since forever, has pretty much the most expensive power costs in Australia. Grid connect is a fast way to lose money here, as feed-in tariffs keep getting slashed. We spent a bit over $40K last October to upgrade to our current setup which delivers up to 7kW from the panels into a 15.2kWh LiFePO4 battery. No 3-phase, so charging the car is only at 15A, so it takes a while. Now we're both retired, that's not a problem. Having spent 12 years living with a lead-acid setup, we're used to not overloading things, so the new system fits our needs very comfortably, even when we have people staying with us.

Personally, I would never consider draining my battery into the grid even if I could. It's a very expensive part of my system, and this kind of treatment would definitely shorten its life, with nothing but a "tough shit" from Aurora Power at the end of it all.
