Review Farmacia Santissima Annunziata

Shortly after the end of the Middle Ages, when Tuscany was under the rule of the Medici family, the renowned city of Florence — the future capital of the duchy — witnessed the founding of Farmacia Santissima Annunziata. Since its establishment in 1561, the company has remained continuously active in the city to this very day.

Nowadays, they produce perfumes and personal care products. Among their creations are several shaving essentials: a shaving cream, an aftershave emulsion, and an aftershave lotion. My choice fell on the cream and the emulsion.

Upon opening the parcel, one surprise followed another. The white cream possessed the consistency of an exceptionally smooth yogurt. At first, I paid little attention to the instructions for use. A bean-sized amount of cream went into the bowl, the shaving brush was readied - “action!” But to my surprise, there was no lather to be found. After reading the instructions, several useful details came to light. The cream is meant to be applied directly to the area to be shaved, ensuring that the skin is thoroughly cleansed and properly moistened beforehand. Shaving then follows, concluded with a rinse of lukewarm water. To avoid a failed shave, I used a slightly larger amount and applied it directly onto my damp face. The result was a fine, slick, moist film with subtle traces of foam and no allergic reactions whatsoever. These unfamiliar conditions seemed destined to put one’s DE razor technique to the test. To my surprise, the primary glide proved satisfactory, whereas the residual slickness was somewhat lacking. Protection definitely fell into the "room for improvement" category. I had expected poor performance, yet that expectation was not fulfilled. Nevertheless, practical experience with DE razors compensated for the shortcomings mentioned above.

To the touch, the aftershave emulsion feels lightly creamy and soft, without any greasiness. It delivers a haemostatic, soothing, and nourishing effect to the skin, without the stinging or burning sensation typical of alcohol-based aftershaves. Compared to other emulsions or creams, it absorbs into the skin more rapidly. A thoroughly successful product.

The fragrance of the set may best be described as a mini-series composed of two episodes, both striving for recognition in the “Fougère Barbershop” category at the Cannes International Film Festival. 😊 The opening act brings fleeting performers such as citrus fruits and basil into the spotlight. During their brief appearance, they provide a fresh, citrusy, green, and aromatic character. In essence, it evokes the image of lemons being squeezed over Mediterranean herbs, presented as a cinematic collage reminiscent of other artistic compositions such as Dior Eau Sauvage, Roja Dove Scandal, and Acqua di Parma Colonia.

Lavender — a celebrated actress in the world of perfumery — forms a bridge toward the final episode. It joins forces with other stars such as oakmoss, patchouli, and amber. Together, they recreate the atmosphere of a traditional barbershop, enveloping you in woody nuances and the scent of talcum powder. This powdery accord is refined and delicate, never cloying or overwhelming. The overall collage recalls fragments of fragrances such as Nicolai New York Intense and Creed Bois du Portugal.

The mini-series created by Farmacia Santissima Annunziata is aimed at gentlemen over the age of thirty, skilled in the use of DE razors, fond of Fougère Barbershop fragrances, and in search of new experiences.

A beautiful and genuinely intriguing experience. 😊
