For me I don't like the floppy feeling. I like a pure badger or a full thick bush. I face lather, synth maybe have badger beat for bowls.

If it's a Muhle - the box/handle will betray it. Otherwise I understand that the current Edwin Jagger, the Aesop, etc., are equipped with STF2 - tells include:
1. says "SilverTip Fibre ®" or the suchlike,
2. shorter loft that the STFv.1,
3. different coloured knot (v.1 has a thicker darker pseudo-badger stripe), and
4. springier backbone.

I believe it's a Generation 3 and different to the Generation 4 STFv2. Here's the article generally referred to about synthetics.

From the shave nook, written in September 2013 re: simpsons chubby synthetic.

Up until now, there have been three manufacturers that have been able to utilize Generation 4 Synthetic Fibers. The first was H.I.S. whose brush was in existence before 2010 according to the manufacturer, but became popular in early 2012. The next manufacturer to come on board was Mühle in the winter of 2012. The last of the three was Frank Shaving with their Pur-Tech line in the summer of 2013. So that made three companies that were perched upon the Generation 4 mountaintop, but now all that has changed. Simpsons has decided to release a brush using Generation 4 Synthetic Fibers and here is a detailed view of that brush with a review in the second thread to follow.


From this I guess all simpsons synths must be gen4

I've talked this one through with Chris at the Shaverhut and I'm pretty confident that is an STF2 * - the fact it costs the same as the Muhle might be a tell too. This looks a lot like my Aesop and to be honest I prefer the EJ handle to the Muhle one.

BTW: there are a few synthetic aficionados who prefer the Gen 3 to the 4 fibres. Some have been known to fight over certain Muhle STF1s that make it onto a BST.

Just email them, he'll probably reply.

Muhle makes just about all EJs hardware. EJ are more a marketing entity.
