Shave of the Day 2015

Status
Not open for further replies.
Brush: Simpson Chubby 1 Silvertip
Razor: Weber
Blade: Schick Platinum (2)
Soap: Jabonman Brisa de Oriente
A/S: European Old Spice

About as perfect as it gets. The Jabonmans lathers very easily into a great thick lather. Love the scent of the Brisa de Oriente and it goes well with the Old Spice.

Brush: 1305
Pre-Shave: Proraso Green
Soap/Cream: Jabonman 'Ylang Ylang'
Razor: PH Weber
Blade: SPP [2]
Post-shave: Capt's Choice Bay Rum

Warming to the 1305 as it breaks in. Softening up and now letting the lather go.
The Proraso Green pre-shave is becoming a must.
Last shave I spoke about the over-floweriness of the Jabonman Violets, well this other sample, the Ylang Ylang was sweet was floral but in a really evocative subtle way. It takes me someplace nice from my youth. Maybe Byron Bay when it was still Paradise and before the yobs buggered it!
SPP played very well in the Weber. I think it better in this metal than the plastic (#25).

Very happy with this shave. Only low points:
- Sort of disappointed that I didn't get a full tub of the Ylang Ylang (did anyone?), and
- That my supply of Captain's Choice Bay Rum might one day come to an end. I will buy a few bottles each time I go to the US from now on.

Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson 'The Duke'
Razor: Barbasol 'Floating Head'
Blade: Schick Super Platinum - shave 2
Cream: D R Harris - Marlborough
Aftershave: Floid

WOW - I finally got a good lather from the D R Harris - maybe this is a keeper after all. The wooden bowl has been the only thing saving it thus far.

Another great shave from the Barbasol, which is working out to be a fantastic razor. No pulling or tugging today, that must have been an abberation.

Oh yes @stillshunter - I got a full Jabonman Y-Y

It's great stuff for summer. [emoji106]

I love the scent too. It's absolutely rich and beautiful. I swung with Honeysuckle (based on a review) but it's too light in scent.
@Mark1966 got the only tub of Ylang Ylang and he also likes he scent. I think he used it last week. See his previous SOTD's.

Black handled superspeed,
Voskhod
Proraso pre shaving cream
Godrej Menthol
Omega 10005
Aqua Velva AS

I'm loving the Proraso pre shaving cream. Dipping your head in (even Darwin's) cold water at the end of the shave makes you feel like you have just braved the darkest depths of a Northern Scandinavian winter, and adding a menthol AS afterwards just keeps that feeling going longer.

I really think I will have to try some of these "extreme" mentholated soaps soon. Any interest from others (I'm looking at you @borked) to try a few out?

FWIW if you want to try the truly extreme menthol soaps then look no further than Stirling Soaps Glacial range - from numerous 'menth-heads' these are head an shoulders above the other high menthol soaps on the market (Yeti's Snot and that kinda stuff).

Nope, haven't touched the Jabonman yet! Just taken samples out for another purpose [box, what box] before I think about it and got sidetracked trying the Barbasol.

Razor: Feather ASD2
Blade: Astra (2)
Cream: CF Lavender
Brush: B&B boar
Prep: hot shower & Edwin jagger preshave
Post: Proraso green splash

First time using the Edwin jagger preshave and honestly I can it's the first preshave to noticeably to affect my shave. First pass and the hair just wiped off pretty much. By my third pass it was if I was born again. Small amount goes a long a packs a menthol wallop.

ERR
Vintage Gillette super stainless
Simpson Berkeley
Jabonman Lima incienso (I think)
Alcolado Glacial.

Not sure about the Simpson yet. It was a lot smaller than I was expecting, and softer for that matter. Maybe I've been using Omega's for too long. Will have to try a few more shaves. I have to compare it with the FS shaving badger soon.
The jabonmans was not what I was expecting either. Never had a shaving soap I could pour onto the brush before. Nice clean lime aroma and a decent menthol hit. Good lather but I think it might get finished too quickly as the gel is that runny.

Great cooling when putting the face under the cold water afterwards. Don't know why you lot use anything other than menthol in the heat of the summer. It feels great.

Seems to have melted a teeny bit... [emoji14]

Mastro Livi RWL34, 9/8 Full Hollow, French Point

I am very happy to see I can finally post in this thread and I am glad I can show you the razors of my collection! I would like to start from this straight razor, which is also one of my favorite ones. It gives a deep and perfect shave, something very common in Mastro Livi straight razors, of course. This RWL-34 blade however has something special and, in particular, I love its French point, very effective, especially in shaving particular areas of the face. Just a pass on Mastro Livi loom strop, then hand palm, and I am ready to enjoy a luxury shave. I must also admit I like this Frank Shaving Pur-tech brush very much: although it has a synthetic loft, it is very soft and pleasing to use, very effective in mounting lather.
  • Pre-Shave: Myrsol Emulsión
  • Soap: Cella Shaving Soap
  • Brush: Frank Shaving High Quality Pur-Tech - 24mm Knot
  • Bowl: Gerby Bowl
  • Strop: Mastro Livi Loom Strop and Hand Palm
  • Razor: Mastro Livi RWL34, 9/8 Full Hollow, French Point
  • Post-Shave: Argan Oil
  • After Shave: Myrsol F./Extra

Brush: Vulfix 2233
Razor: English Tech
Blade: Vintage Gillette Platinum (1)
Soap: Jabonmans Brisa de Oriente
A/S: Simpsons balm

Not the best shave I've ever had. Didn't load enough soap on the brush, although I did finish off the sample. The gillette blade really doesn't seem to like the tech. I'll try it in my Fatboy tomorrow and see how it goes.

Brush: Erskine butterscotch (TGN finest reknot)
Pre-Shave: Proraso Green
Soap/Cream: Wickham's Southsea Spray
Razor: PH Weber
Blade: SPP [3]
Post-shave: Floid

Happy days, the Wickham samples I ordered at the end of 2014 arrived. I have five flavours to get through - hoorah...and big thanks to @Nightguard for the helping hand...though I think I'm going to regret only having 10 grams of each to play with.

Anyway even my little 20mm knot (is that right @Pjotr or @Mark1966 ?) whipped up enough yoghurt for more than this morning's four passes. This stuff smells so evocative. Not sure where I've smelt it before. It's not in your face - Jabonman-floral-style - this scent is subtle and even a little elusive. Love it!....and the lather? Top shelf. This stuff is up there with Jabonman, Tabac, Speick and even Proraso. I'm really going to enjoy these next few weeks cycling through these Wickham flavours. Also love the fact that the ingredients are oh-so simple...
Potassium Stearate, Potassium Cocoate, Potassium Lardate, Potassium Apricotkernelate, Water, Glycerine, Parfum.
...that's it!

SPP in the Weber performed impeccably.

A great shave. So much so forensics with the Floid found nothing untoward. C'mon work what you got!

Brush: Vintage butterscotch Simpson
Razor: Barbasol 'Floating Head'
Blade: Schick Super Platinum - shave 3
Cream: Jabonman 'Ylang Ylang Pachuli Naranja'
Aftershave: Floid

After pressure from @filobiblic and @stillshunter I sucumbed to trying the Jabonman. First impression - this is a great soap!

I'll need to use it a few more times but it really does seem top shelf.

Another great shave from the Barbasol, seemed to have dialed in the technique on this now - which tends to support @Drubbing's view that technique is the key.

The Floid told me there was some micro-cuts but hey, a small price to pay for BBS goodness :)

Clearly the bar has been set higher by @razorguy with the SOTD pics and reviews - nice first entry mate - very impressive!

good stuff. Are they only sold direct or can you buy Wickhams here in Oz?
