Shave of the day

Yep, very good. Nice lather and easy to whip up, if someone told you it was tallow you probably wouldn't argue. Smell is pretty bland though. Probably the whitest lather I've seen. It's almost fluorescent.

It does have a glow doesn't it?

It is so easy to work with and I think the scent is good without being overpowering.

Good stuff. I'll stock up on a few when I'm in Spain in a few months. Good PIF material!

Noice, very noice!

Shall we put in orders now?

I think its a winner all round. I used my badger instead of the cheap boar brush last night and got lather i have only equalled with proraso.

It has a subtle soap smell, but a nice one.

LE Semogue Boar brush
Merkur Progress on 3 with a Treet blade
Razorock xxx soap
Nivea AS balm

I had forgotten how much this product lathers. I had enough to shave three people from a simple 7-10 seconds of loading. The Semogue boar holds a lot of lather and has lovely stiffness in the bristles that I miss in my 830.

The Treet blade was ok, not great, very forgiving and a reasonably average finish. I'm using them at the moment to try and use up the random blades I have rattling around my blade case.

Last 10 days, Ive been using the new R41. Today I decided to go back and try the gillette. I used the same personna red which has 2 shaves on it.
Amazing difference, I think the R41 has taught me stuff. Moved around the face so easily and fast. No care really needed in the easy passes.

It's only when trying to finish with a close overall appearance that I get into difficulty and have to slow to a crawl. In my toughest beard spots the R41 is superior at mowing.

The new R41 is certainly a good teacher!

As part of a YKW purchase back in Feb, I got a 5g sample of Acqua di Parma cream, so tonight I decided that my technique was getting close to good enough to try it.

Nice, pleasant soapy smell. I would say it is a soft soap rather than a cream according to the Drubbing rule of thumb. Not sure if it is because I worked it for longer than usual, but got a great lather which (so far) I have only managed to equal with 2-3 times the amount of proraso, or LaToya's stick.

Matched it up with the EJ, and my standard blade so far the Astra.

Pretty good all round shave which I finished of with some Speick AS.

I used a MM CP cella and the simmo badger. Haven't use the badger for a while, you really have to put a finger against the hairs to make it give up lather and make it face lather well...

Then I tried out the la toja soap and the horsey. First time using la toja and maybe diluted it too much. Lathered well but no protection.
Then again switched the 3 shave old SE blade into a 1912 (the only razor that will even shave with an SE blade that old for me) But I was impressed with how much lather I got from so little soap off the stick, just couldn't judge it right I think.

Well the deed is done, and I remain untouched.

The first decision was whether or not to trim with scissors first such was the growth :)
Decided that was for wimps only so went straight for the big Chinese Badger which feels more Boar like than any of my other Badgers. Chose this cause of its size - I wanted lotsa lather. (as an aside at 61 I do not have a grey hair in my head, but when I let the whiskers grow in they are very salt and pepper). The Clog Pruf removed all within its path, the lovely noise as whiskers die for my pleasure is some thing not to be missed.
Next pass the Slim set to 7 with a brand new Indian Wilkinson - tidied up very apidly leaving a smooth face and a sink full of hair - took about 10 minutes to get it all down the drain.

Still I enjoyed it all (and I may confess to a slight exageration as to the length of whiskers on the face.)

I'm rocking the Spanish look again tonight, La Toja, and Floid Vig, and I am liking both these products a lot.

I'd had a couple of days off from shaving tonight, and couldn't remember how old that Astra blade was - I think I changed it last time, but couldn't be sure. I think I just threw away a 1 shave blade, but better to be safe than sorry.

Overnight in Singapore on Friday, and then on to Penang, Malaysia to see Mrs Eggbert Saturday morning. My chances of getting to the infamous Mustafas are now looking slim due to the change in plans, but I will still give it my best shot.

If i don't get online tomorrow, see you next month.

Coupla on holiday shaves with my trusted plastic toy, the 7O'Clock bakelite with a Timor. Used a Tabac stick with the Vulfix 2189 boar badger. Back home now and one shave with the opposite razor, a long handled Super Adjustable with Timor using the Spanish horsey/La Toja combo. No complaints at all. The Super is super heavy and feels quite lumpy compared to my plastic toy.

Gave the 'new' Simpson 41 a run today with 1805 cream and aftershave and a GEM 1912.

Nice shave although the Simpson is not what I would call a great brush. It is adequate but has lost a reasonable amount of hair over the cleaning process.

Tomorrow I'll try the nylon one I cleaned up as well - bit of sandpaper and some Mother's polish and it came up OK too...

They came up well. The Simpson knot does look a bit worse for wear. Wasn't that obvious on your earlier pics. Did you manage to remove the burn mark?

Yeah the 41 is definitely up for a reknot. Even if it were half decent, the ick factor of using a decades old brush of unknown user history is too high for me.

Yes I managed to sand out the burn mark on the other one - I'm pleased with the result but the nylon bristles may be a little dubious.

The Simpson know shed some hairs when cleaning and through handling. You will notice it is looking less blonde - those hairs have disappeared.

I thought you were beyond ick and thought that was silly? I confess I wasn't hugely keen but gave it a burl.

Now the question - to reknot in pure for historical accuracy or best?

Nylon could be fantastic. I suffers from being a form of plastic which as we all know is considered ick amongst the purists.

Unless the previous owner suffered from anthrax and used it 24hrs before you did and you failed to do any sort of cleaning there's nothing ick about it really. Drubbing should know better being in the medical game and married to a microbiologist.

As it appears you're sending it to Simpsons for a re-knot you have to go for best IMO. It's only strictly speaking historically accurate with it's original knot. Best is not a universally liked knot. Although it has all the characteristics of badger it has a hefty scritch which, unlike boar, doesn't seem to get much less with use. I don't mind it myself. Why not do it yourself? If you can fit it, TGN (extra hair) silvertip is pretty damned good and looks sensational. Did one for drubbing. Was very reluctant to give it back and had to resist the urge to pretend not to know him when he knocked on the door to collect it.

I accept all that BUT it doesn't look 'right'

Phew, I was worried about using it this morning. Although anthrax was more common years ago...

I am likely to send to Simpson. 'Why not do it yourself?' - because I will invariably stuff it up!

I would have liked to have kept it original with the box and all but I also want to use the thing!

I think Pj mistyped, and meant Pure when he wrote Best.

Simpsons Best hair is a very good reason not to do it yourself. TGN finest is good, but if you want to keep it a simpson, then Best is the go, it's great whatever loft and width they make it. Not a fan of the longer ones, but they're still very good.

Mark will advise on the best fit for the handle, and that knot size will determine what your loft options are. I can't tell how big yours is, but Simpsons can fit a great knot in anything from 18-22mm. They tend to get monstrous after that.

The Grohlster? you can have it for services already rendered if you're taken by it.

I've just had a Omega Baby Pro turn up, so the badgers are already outnumbered.
