Anyone used one of these EJ black synthetic brushes?

I've never used it but i did see one in a local Shavershop, it looked cheap and not very dense, saying that though, i am yet to see or hear anything bad about EJ, got their razors and soaps. You could do worse than that for 15 bucks i reckon.
 
Just found 1 review of it - but the guy only compared it to his boar brushes, so not very useful

Makes my a bit worried though, that you can't buy it directly on the EJ site

Edit: OK it seems like an old fibre from them and adding to that the tiny size (20mm) I personally think you would be wasting your money
 
I know nothing of them as I've never tried a synth, but a lot of the well regarded synthetic brushes are not much more moneywise so I would probably spend a little more to get something you know will be good.

It's not like you have to spend $2-300 for a good one.
 
Yeah, pretty much what I thought. It's cheap, that's the only reason I was even curious about it. Looks like a hard pass.

That's a really cool offer, @alfredus but I'm not really in the market for a new brush, I just saw the sale at shaverhut and thought about grabbing another brush. I've already got a 24mm whipped dog synthetic brush that I really like as my daily driver and I recently acquired a 24mm maggards synthetic, which I don't like anywhere near as much as the whipped dog, but it's still a very serviceable brush so I don't need anything else atm.

Please elaborate: why don't you like the Maggards as much? I myself have a Whipped Dog 24mm synth as my travel brush, but often read favourable reviews about the Maggards one. So I would like to learn more...

Any thoughts about trying a natural hair brush?

I'll start with the things I do like about the maggards brush: it's quite dense (denser than the WD even though the loft is a little higher) and I like the handle (the colour is ugly, but I like how it feels).

What I don't love about it is that the fibres are not as soft as the WD. It's quite scrubby, and scratchy, which I didn't expect.

It whips up a good lather though and if I could get the density of the maggards with the softness of the WD I think it'd be pretty much spot on for me. I would like to (maybe when the dollar is a bit stronger) get a 30mm WD, maybe set 5mm lower to see if I could get that extra density.

As far as natural bristles go at the moment I don't think that's a path I want to go down. I do have the old best shave Turkish brush no. 6 (or whatever number it is) which is supposed to be a horse hair, but by all reports is actually a boar but it's terrible. I feel kind of ethnically conflicted about using an animal hair brush. I'm not a vego or anything, but I try as much as possible to only buy products that are cruelty free (or at least not tested on animals) and I don't have a lot of confidence in badger hair harvested in China (and from the reading I've done I think modern synths are as good or better than boar so at the moment I'll stick with those).

Oh, of course I'm also conflicted about the environmental impact of producing synthetic fibres, but that's a whole other rabbit hole.
 
A scratchy brush is horrible, no matter what fibre. Glad I know this now about the Maggard brush.

Well from the sounds of it you would want the Edwin Jagger/ Muhle V2 or even Chubby Synthetic. From what I have read, they are quiet dense and in the case of the Chubby also low lofted.

My WD is set 5mm lower - it is not floppy, but I would definitely not label it dense.

And it seems you could get a real horse brush (ie Vie Long) - they are seem to be harvested cruelty free ;)

I have just been on the whipped dog website, am i correct in seeing that a 24mm synth with handle is $24.00 US? My previous travel brush has fallen out of favour and Alfredus has put me onto this as a possible replacement.

Looks about right - might be worth asking @stillshunter or others who have purchased from WD how much postage is.

I have one of the Muhle V2 black synthetics - it's a very acceptable brush. It has a lot more backbone than a Plisson knot while still having nice soft tips.

For what it's worth....
