  • Fatboy on 7.
  • Vintage 'U2' Spoiler, 3rd shave.
  • Vie-Long Horsey.
  • "Da Fat", face lathered.

Great shave. The ultra-sharp edge is now off the blade and is now just 'damn sharp'. Smoothness and control abounds. I think I could get 10 shaves or more out of it, might give it a marathon and see where it falls over.

Really started to get the hang of the MWF now. The Vie-Long is scrubby enough to lift the product into the knot, and generates a nice fine creamy lather too, no coarse bubbles like the Smoggie 830.

No alum, no ASB, just a warm rinse-off and towel dry. Feels great. Can't wipe the smile off my dial.

Merkur Progress on 4
New Bleueueueu
Proraso andalwood and Shea
Semogue LE Boar

Finished with Jack Black AS

BBS. First time in ages. Not even any stubble around the jawline.

I liked the new Proraso, I can actually smell the Sandalwood, which as Drubs knows, I used to give away as I couldn't even smell the bloody stuff.

'Course you do, course you can. Yes, you did. Got any others?

What am I saying? Now there's Proraso and it's actually quite excellent, why bother?

I've still got a tube and three quarters of the old stuff. I fear it will be a long time before I buy any more proraso.

I used it last night with the other usuals, except i have no idea which blade was in the razor. I noticed the eucalypt smell far more than I have previously.

I don't think I will bother with the sandalwood. Everything else sandalwoody i have tried (including TOBS) has been a bit meh on the olfactory front.

Everything I tried with Sandalwood was bland.

The new Proraso with Sandalwood is a pretty nice scent, and easily detectable.

EJ89 Barley Chrome with brand new Persona Lab Blue
Simpson MC2
T&H 1805 Cream
T&H 1805 A/S

Well after about 20 days using a cart my technique was a little rusty. Some nicks and scratches.

Nice to get back to DE reality.

Edwin Jagger DE89 with Gillette Platinum (blue)
Semogue 1470
TOBS Sandalwood cream
TOBS Sandalwood aftershave gel

This blade is fantastic- great shave and no irritation. I'm finding that two passes are enough for me: WTG and ATG.

I'm obviously a sandalwood fan. so its nice having the gel for after too.

Thomas Method on my 5 day growth.

Was shave #3 on the personna lab and I think it's done and dusted felt very similar to an Astra SP this shave.

Frank Shave Silvertip
Da Fat
Gem & 34C
Personna Lab #3
WH
L'Oreal ASB

Very nice 3 passer!

So was that the Dark/Maltese Platinum? They go well in the DE8x razors.

The sandalwood in TOBS is one of the more pleasing blends, however it is not pure sandalwood. The Proraso Red is very pure sandalwood scent, and is ultra cheap.

Nope, the White platinum. I was hoping that I wouldn't like it due to the price, but alas I do :worried:

Thanks for the tips re Proraso, I might get a tube for travelling.

I don't know if there's such a thing as Pure sandalwood, they're all different, and you either like them or not - and then thre's the fragrances, some of which are unrecognisable of whatever Sandalwood is supposed to be.

In creams, I liked TOBS but can't remember it, but I think it was pretty mild. I've some GFT and it's quite earthy, but at the price it's not going to be a second purchase.

Proraso Red shaves better and is more protective, and the scent is sweeter. $$ can't be argued with either.

Haven't yet sorted through the DE blade stash so I am sticking with the tried and true method. I coming to quite like the Arko - using a MensBiz Boar and getting a nice creamy lather with it. Last two shaves with this combination have been very pleasant and very smooth. (Still feels a bit weird to rub this lump of stuff over your face but as the end result is good who am I to complain.)

A true Sandalwood Essential Oil has a particular scent, but that scent is not what most of us know as Sandalwood. Unfortunately there is much adulteration of Sandalwood, many brokers will dilute it with carrier oils like jojoba, or even add synthetic fragrance to mask their work. Sometimes they will add a lower quality Sandalwood-like scent such as Amyeris.

There are also 'other' Sandalwoods - Red Sandalwood, Australian Sandalwood. None smell quite the same, but have uses in cologne-style blends.

That said, what you smell in TOBS sandalwood is not a pure Sandalwood at all. It has a very synthetic twang to it, plus I believe there is some incense in the blend. It's sweet, a bit powdery and not "Sandalwood", but a mighty nice scent that my nose likes.

Proraso Red is a very pure 'straight' Sandalwood scent, however I doubt it is 100% pure Mysore Sandalwood Essential Oil based. It does have a good dose of Mysore, could be as high as 30% of the fragrance component. The rest is probably something like Amryis. I can't detect any noticeable synthetic note in it, and my sister who has very sensitive skin when it comes to synthetic product shows no sign of irritation.

For the money you pay, the lather you get and the scent being such a 'straight' yet earthy, masculine Sandalwood scent, I reckon the Proraso guys have hit a home run. Waiting for the Pre/Post to come out in the Red version.

I've been using the NEW, horsey brush and tabac recently.
I swapped the NEW for a new improved the other day.

Yesterday swapped the razor/blade for a SE Gem lather catcher as the israeli DE plat blade was fininshed. Yeah, back onto the SEs.
Might swap the brush and razor for a boar and MWF and give it a run too. I hate stuff sitting there unused...

Brought a bengall 4/8 that I acquired from Ebay a month ago
Spent whopping ten bucks on

Honed and stropped with autosol

And to my delight its popping arm hairs

BRUSH: Cheap and nasty Chinese badger brush which is falling apart

SHAVING CREAM: SHAVE (don't mind it)

Great shave!

I'm gonna go right ahead and assume she shaves her legs and not her face ;)

Something a little different today...

Semogue 1470
TOBS Sandalwood cream
TOBS Sandalwood aftershave gel
Derby blade

...using a Tech travel version

As someone has said (on these forums I think) pretty much any safety razor is a 'travel' razor- they aren't exactly big. The Tech travel version is insane though- disassembled you could almost fit the whole thing in a matchbox.

Anyhow, shaving with it isn't actually too bad. The size wasn't really an issue, but the lack of weight (or 'heft' if you get what I mean) takes a little bit to get used to. I imagine going from a razor like a Fatboy to this would be a challenge. Basically, I found I had to apply a small amount of pressure to actually shave with it (compared to my EJ which I basically just let run across my face).

The end result was good, but not great. In summary I'd say that you can achieve a good shave with a travel Tech, but a full-sized safety razor is much nicer :)

No, I use her as a guinea pig. I whipped up a test lather and asked her opinion on scent. I then pasted her arm with lather as all big brothers do to antagonise their little sisters. If she mentions that it gave her a rash, I know to keep an eye on the product.

Been trying Astras after a long lay off. Plenty sharp for me after a long time swpaping between Reds and Yellows. Getting some outrageously close shaves with just a W&XTG pass.

Nearly a week of them does leave me a few tender spots, but not real irritation - but I used to really hack myself up with these. Probably best to flip these with another blade instead of using them consecutively.

Also bought some Cade soap again on impulse. I remember this was a lot meh to begin with, but improved a lot when it had softened up. So I grated it, left it damp, almost soaking and it still won't lather for shit. Looks and feel frothy and airy, just like MWF, and disappears on the face. Maybe I got a crap one, as it was never this unusable. Shame, as the scent is really nice.
