Hi all,
I just joined the forum a couple of days ago, so I figured it's now time to introduce myself.
I live in Brisbane (west), and I've been wet shaving (that is , foam and cartridge razors) since I was a teenager. Short forays into the electric world, but always back to blades , for that unbeatable smooth and fresh feeling.

I started traditional shaving about 6 years ago, mainly as a way to save money, and I never looked back.
In time, my morning shaving routine has evolved to a form of meditation, my only true "me time" of the day, that's 15 minutes in the "zone" which I won't share with anybody else around the house (a wife and two kids).
I don't spend a lot of money in gear, but I would try something new every six months or so.
Here is my standard routine, I usually shave every two days (including weekends) and for special occasions.

Wash and rinse face with hot water.
Apply pre-shave cream
Face lather (stick or cream)
Shave with : Shavette (2 passes) . Rarely, DE (3 passes) if I am really really in a rush. I am a shavette person.
Alum or cold water splash
Aftershave balm (or cream)

So far I have managed to fight the urge to buy anything expensive, but Chrismas is coming and next year I will turn 50 ;) Again, to me wet shaving is all about routine and relaxation, gear is secondary.

This is what I "roll with", these days :

Proraso pre-shave cream
Arko Stick, or Palmolive cream (the big red tube)
Omega boar brush (home) , Men-U boar brush (away)
Parker Push Type shavette (home), Sedef shavette (away), Weber PH safety razor (when in a hurry)
Shark , Personna (red) , Gillette SharpEdge (yellow)
Omega alum stick
"Prep" cream aftershave.

For when I turn 50 ? Easy answer : Feather DX (not sure if I want it foldable handle or kamisori-style) or a true straight.

That's all, I am sure I will enjoy paste-and-cut.

Welcome @FrankF. I have a Feather DX non folding, which I have just used for 21 straight shaves and I love it! It must be said though that I am a noob and only have twin blade disposables to compare it to, other than electric razors in the dim, dark past. So take that for what it's worth! I have put my impressions in the "Shave of the Day" thread anyway.

BTW watch out for all the enablers around here - it seems to be catching! :cautious:

Hi Frank

I only joined a little over a month ago and the impressions of each of my 21 shaves have been posted in that thread on the day of each shave. So unfortunately you have to trawl through the recent pages of that thread for the last month to find them. I intend on posting a proper review of the razor once I have tried a few more blades and have improved my technique with experience. But I still won't have used DEs or conventional straights to compare it to so not sure how useful it will really be!

Anytime you want to try different cut-throats, just let me know - I've got most grinds and widths so that you can get a feel for what suits you.

Thanks mate.
At the moment I'm leaning more towards the Feather, if only for the nearly zero maintenance required.
But...you never know... I will keep that in mind, thanks

You can continue to save a lot of money here poking around the B/S/T.

Welcome aboard @FrankF ! Before you know it you will be spinning down the wetshaving vortex faster than you thought possible!
Ive been using DE's for a few years and recently got a few Feather SS (Folding and Kamasori) - so far so good - they really add a new dimension to the shave (maybe thats just fear) but probably a gateway to straights!

When you get used to Zen of the cut-throat shave (albeit via a shavette), the maintenance becomes all part of the the experience, my friend

That's right. I used to shudder at the thought of stroping and honing but now I enjoy the honing which is, for me about every three weeks for a 5min touch up if I use just one blade.

Honing would be something to do on a Saturday morning, probably a nice excuse for not mowing or taking the rest of the family to the shops... I like that ;)
I am more bothered by stropping which, if I understand correctly, one must do every time before using the razor.
Feather DX for when I am 50, straight for when I am 60. Deal !!!
