Boxes and stands.

As many or most or even all here know I recently worked some pieces of stone in attempts to make some different showpiece razors.Due to the material, difficulty to work and time involved I have made the decision that they just are not feasible.I can get them sharp enough to cut skin with a little pressure, but shaving edge, though possible,is too much and virtually impossible to maintain.
After much thought and discussions with a good friend I have decided that I will manufacture straight razor and maybe DE boxes and stands from reclaimed Australian hardwood.I have access to tons, literally, of timber planks that were originally sawn for fence palings and they are of no cost.I spent a total of seven years in manufacture of bedroom furniture so I have experience working and finishing timber products.
After looking around the net I have noticed there are few makers of timber storage boxes for straights with those that are available either very cheap from China (stained pine, very rough), or expensive. The latter are well made, yet come from overseas which contributes to their over $100 price.
As I have no outlay for timber, this reduces the projected end price for any items I produce.Boxes will be
impeccably finished with decking oil type product and some French polished. They will be glued and nailed together, real nails hammered in and will have decent hinges and latching.I am considering two timber "u" cradles to hold the razor which will be fitted to the base of the box,as I feel this will be more robust than some type of foam insert. The lid itself would be one piece of solid timber.I am unsure as to whether I will add a lining to the boxes.
I will be making straight razor boxes. The decision has been made and I have already budgeted for the purchase of tools in July and have items ready by end of that month.
So,I would appreciate if members here could comment as to whether similar boxes would be viable for DE razors. Also razor and brush stands.
What would be a method of holding the DE in a box?
U shape cradles or some sort of lined "cushion" insert?
Is there a want or need for a DE box?
Room for razor only or have space for a tuck of blades?
For razor stand, what would be a good number for multiple razors?
Single DE holder with brush as well?
What about a vertical stand that holds multiple razors/brushes?
A box for very special brushes, that has ventilation?

Any thoughts are welcome guys.

Couple thoughts from me
  • unless the box is on show, I'd be looking at cheap options
  • If we're talking stands, it would be useful to have someone to keep a few blades
  • You give me spots, I'll fill them with razors :D In terms of width, most I've seen seem to be around that 30cm mark. just enough gap between the razors so the don't touch. But a 10 razor display would be awesome (maybe if it's deeper or 2 tiered?

@pvsampson hook a brother up my friend. How much are we talking about and what capacity?

I have grabbed a few cigar boxes to use ( sans cigars of course) but didn’t have the time to make inserts to keep the razors from bumping each other.

note: these are not mine but on my list to try make something similar, but you are probably in a better position & skill set to make them than me, that is for sure

these are early pics of my main box that I converted
it has 2 layers the top shelf / tray holds 14 str8s of my favorites rotation (excluding my larger monkey tails as they don't fit), then the lower part holds double that again in socks without boxes, also now full, along with a another smaller box for longer term storage

look forwarded to seeing your options
my inherited Aristocrat is only in a small cardboard box but deserves a better storage arrangement

Sorry for late response as I was at training. Some things to think about @Korbz ,for sure.Multi rack seems to be the go and will start thinking of designs. @Rami cost would depend on how I actually seat the straights in the box,but there will be a discount for members here of course.A basic U type cradle at each end would be relatively easy and cheap, and if I use a more elaborate style it would put the price up.The first couple of boxes that @Substance posted are examples on what I would like to do,just puts extra on my budget for the router setup. Thanks for posting those images Dion,as so far they are the best pics I have seen of cradle systems and gives me an idea of dimensions.
Looking through the site that was linked yesterday with the horn brush handles has given me some ideas for maybe including some abalone and/or pearl shell inserts as well and already have some designs in my head.
Thanks guys for the input.Going to start drafting dimensions, cutting lists, assembly and finishing process and hopefully can get a few basic prototypes made in the next few weeks as a mate said I could use some of his tools.
Anyone that thinks they might have any relevant ideas is welcome to post.

I went over the road to my friends place to pick up some timber last weekend.Ended up with half a trailer load of planks, and as they have only owned the house for a year and are clearing out a lot of stuff they don't need I also came home with an old functional dock saw and a woodworking bench with a big old Joplin vice on it.Difficult to get all the cuts I need with a dock saw only, and not really set up to start building any quality items but managed to get a rough as guts prototype made to give an idea what I need to do.Mainly how the box will go together and also how to minimise timber offcuts. Most of the timber is pretty good but some have some large knots and a couple of crook bits and these will be the pieces I use for some of the lids and single boxes and the good bits I will be able to cut two boxes and one lid.
Rough test box...
