I recently did my own home restore on a rare British red tip Super speed.
I was lucky enough to find on eBay from a seller who was obviously not into razors I was lucky to get it at a absolute bargain price. It included a late model British Gillette tech all in a faux leather case.
I could tell by the pictures that the plating seemed to be all intact but the red tip on the end was quite worn paint wise.
I was happy to see when I received the razor that the plating was indeed in good condition apart from normal light scratching on the barn doors.
Firstly, I covered the entire razor except for the red tip in insulation tape wrapping it at least half a dozen times near the tip of the handle.
I then proceeded to sand off the old paint with 180 grit sandpaper including the notches in the tip which I used a small piece of sandpaper around a wooden skewer tip.
Once the tip back to brass I then placed the razor in an ultrasonic cleaner for 15 minutes on 60°C with a squirt of detergent after which I dried it with a hairdryer.
I googled the closest modern colour match to the original red tip from Gillette according to Google AI.
It’s Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Satin Spray, Claret Wine.
I applied three coats over a couple of days
And then oven hardened the repainted tip. I used a process I read about on asmall metal parts machining forum which works for most spray paint.
I placed the razor on an oven in a cold oven I set the oven on 150 C and left it in there for one and a half hours with the Range hood on high in case there were any toxic fumes I then turn the oven off and let the razor cool down on its own with the door open.
According to Google AI, this is an important step because of it being exposed to shaving soap and being washed off on a regular basis.
As you can see in the pic, it came out pretty good if I do say so myself.
Do you have any home restore of your own to share?
This is the first time I’ve attempted one.
Cheers.
