Very smooth lovely on the rocks, My Dad got two ltr's duty free and give me one. Thanks Dad I'll return the favour Tomorrow with Dalwhinnie 15 Years (y)
 
Aberlour 16 Year Old Double Cask Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky.

Got it in special at $99.99 from Nicks thanks to a heads up here, back at $150 now, a very nice drop.

With my Glengoyne 15 Year Old finished and this one almost there it was time for another order. Didn't both with trying Duty Free, just ordered -

  • The Macallan 12 Year Old Sherry Matured Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)
  • El Dorado 12 Year Old Rum (700ml)
  • Glenfiddich 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml)

I've just read the following review on it from some idiot on masterofmalt.com:
Its incredibly peaty and smokey and your cant even take a proper whiff. Few attempts later, after my sinuses have been cleared with the intense peat fumes, my long nose is able to find an entire orchard in the glass. Its much too confusing I thought and took a sip to try and break apart the flavors. Complexities continue, but less peaty, a cocktail of fruits, white chocolate and coffee. The taste remains the palette past the short smooth finish.

Couldn't be further from my impressions.
  • Firstly, no peat or smoke whatsoever.
  • Orchard? I could barely find an apple seed.
  • Fruit cocktail... really?
  • White choc? Nuh
All I got was a very smooth, ultra sweet , vanilla biscuit. Very boring.

I happened to start eating some blue cheese mid-way through the dram, and it then turned the whiskey into an ultra sweet alcoholic milo on the tongue.

Won't be bothering with another bottle once this one is down. In fact, my few experiences with Irish whiskey lead me to think I probably won't be buying any of them again.

Cheers, that's what I started my night with too - my bottle came in a metal case in the shape of the Ardbeg distillery (warehouse?).

I then went on to try a couple other peated whiskies I own, Talisker Storm, Ben Romach 10 and a IB Caol Ila.
Considering I couldn't stand smokey / peated whiskies 6 months or so ago, I am amazed that they are now starting to dominate my stable and the sherried whiskies I originally adored are taking a backseat. I remember tasting almost nothing but ash the first few times I tried Ardbeg, but the 10 tonight was a delight.
