Hey guys,

Just thought I would drop in and say g'day - drubbing dropped me a PM over at B&B, so thought I would pop in and see what is going on.

Just about to start DE shaving, picked up some gear earlier this week and plan to get started on the weekend - looking forward to it!!

oh and here is a pic of my new set up... looking forward to binning the Gillette Fusion Power very shortly.

Merkur HD
Super Badger Brush and stand
Alum block
Some Cella shaving soap
Blade sampler

A big thanks to Mens Biz here in Melbourne for helping to steer me on the right path!!

Good onya.

A good bunch of blokes here happy to help out without hype.

Having said that, Cella is of course the best soap in the world, and nothing beats a HD.

Be interested to see what you think of the MB Super badger.

Nathan needs to get that Cella up on his site, I think that will make some local punters very happy (Me). Just as soon as I get through this 500g brick...

Can I suggest you go with an Astra, Derby or Red s first up? While blades are the most subjective thing, there's wide consensus that the Merkurs are a bit cack. You might like Feathers, but being the sharpest things there is, they might not be the best to learn on.

I am sure that the MB Super will be a massive step up from the Synthetic Omega I have been using for a few years now. I did try a more expensive brush while I was over there, but the super felt best for my needs - good balance between softness and stiffness. Time will tell.

Re the blades, Nath pretty much said to start with the Merkurs and work my way up just so I got a feel for them all, although like you said they don't seem to have a great reputation, although there does seem to be a lot of conflicting opinion across all blades generally - horses for courses I guess.

The plan had been Merkurs -> Derby -> Reds -> Astra -> Feathers

Hey Brendo, welcome aboard mate.

I second the Merkur blade thing; I thought they were a bit ordinary compared to many others.

However, each to their own - you may find them good for your style/skin etc.

yeah I reckon I will still give them a go - worst case scenario I will be able to add my weight to the nay-sayers

Welcome, plenty of good advice here. Hope you find a good workable combo quickly, then you can start on the fun stuff.Good luck,

Welcome Brendo, glad to see you here.

I am very negative on the Derby's, but I would shave with a Derby instead of a Merkur if that was the only choice. That said, Nathan's advice is spot on for a new DE shaver. Start with the worst blade and head upwards. Your blade progression plan is sound.

We have plenty of interesting blades here, if you want to try some then I am sure to be able to help out.

Hello Brendo. Welcome. Nice load of gear you've got there. Just to wade in on the blade thing. This site is largely populated by DE blade freaks so just say you love'm all and you'll be all right. Don't change blades too much in the beginning. Next to you trying to find out how to shave, mapping your beard pattern, trying to make a decent lather etc etc, the blade will make no difference whatsoever. It's just another variable you don't want to think about. Nothing wrong with Merkur. They suffer from being expensive so people think they're crap. By the way I gave up on the whole DE thing and just shave with single edge now. No blade freaks in SE land. There are only a couple of blades to choose from.

Poor Pjotr has such little choice in blades now...

Come back to DE shaving. You know you want to.

No way Jugman. I've just been buying more SE razors. Crazy for somebody who uses rather than collects the damn things but I was hitting a dead end on soaps (i.e. I've now got most of the usual suspects) so the niggly little voice inside my head became a roar. Amongst many other advantages associated with SE shaving, the lack of blade choice is a relief and at the very least potentially one less acquisition disorder.
