Hi Everyone,

I am 33 years old and live in Perth.

I actually haven's started shaving with a DE yet but plan to do so in the near future. I have been scouring youtube and the internet in general for advice and reviews and such and stumbled upon this wonderful website.

At the moment I use cartridges to shave my head and my face but am looking at picking up a Merkur 34HD, a sample pack of blades, Proraso white cream and undecided on a brush at this point.

Very open to any suggestions for my first DE shave.

Cheers,

Dustin

Hi another Perth person welcome , like you i had very little shave gear when i started 8 months on and im set for years to come

Welcome :)

Don't discount single edge (SE) razors either, especially for head shaves (I'm a head shaver too). A Gem 1912 loaded with a PTFE coated blade is a great head shaver.

Welcome mate!

Welcome to P&C @Dustin L - great to have you here and I'm sure people will help you get going in no time (y)

Thanks everyone again for the warm welcome and the helpful tips.

I have purchased my first razor! A Merkur 34C from @Benjamin . It's in the post as we speak. Very easy and fast transaction.

Looking at grabbing:
https://www.maggardrazors.com/product/maggard-razors-24mm-synthetic-shaving-brush-marble-handle/
and
https://www.maggardrazors.com/product/double-edge-razor-blade-sampler-35-blades-7-types/
from Maggards Razors. Shipping is under 10USD to Perth and I've heard good things about the brush.

I think Ill probly grab an order of preshave and soap from beard and blade to round it all out.

Can't wait to get the gear and have my first shave.

Cheers

Soooo.....

I picked up some soap today from @extinctary that he kindly gave me a good deal on.
I got a little too excited and grabbed a cheap 6 dollar boar brush from Amcal while I was grocery shopping even though I have a Maggard synthetic coming in the post.

My thought process was that I will be able to practice lathering and just shave with a cartridge razor since my Merkur 34C from @Benjamin is in the post as well.
The lathering went great, got a nice rich bowl lather on my first go around and had enough for 3 passes with the Strop Shoppe Black Tie.

But here's where it went wrong. I thought I will do a 2 pass shave with a cleanup so I can then have a base line to compare my DE shaves with once my Merkur arrives.
Idea may have been good but execution destroyed my face.lol
That being said I do have a baseline to compare it to now. haha

Very much looking forward to having a go with the Merkur when it arrives and feeling the difference between the shaves. I do realize my first few go arounds with DE shaving me be somewhat disastrous as well but hopefully the long term will be much more enjoyable.

Thanks again everyone who has helped and been generous with your time, advice and your supplies as I start my journey in DE shaving.

Cheers

Great to hear you got the Strope Shoppe working, it is an amazing lathering beast. The problem with cartridges is that they do a better job of pulling hair out rather than cutting it. If I was hard pressed to use one it would be with as little pressure as I could muster, and the shortest strokes possible, an Im talking like 5mm to 1cm strokes. An then rinsing after almost every one, due to the multi blades getting clogged. not a fan. When I started with the DE, it wasnt a blood bath, quite the opposite, it was a million times better than cartridges ever were, and it only got better. Just remember the important rules, like prep, an pressure, an Im sure you will be fine.
Cheers
