Hi all. A big thanks to "bald as" for giving me the heads up as to this forum. Glad to have found it. I have been a long time wet shaver (decades actually) but never thought about it beyond a lather and a shave until I re-found some of the razors from the 60s and 70s and all the memories came flooding back of smells and first shaves, etc..a bit sentimental I know but it has kicked off a great new "habit" or maybe I could use the word obsession - not sure if that labels me way too early :-) . Anyway, I no longer accept soaps, brushes and razors at face value. In the last 12 months have managed a nice collection of Fat Boys, Slims and a small collection of what I call "good" razors. Finally, looking forward to learning more and maybe, if the opportunity arises, to pass on something as well.

Cheers

Welcome @Blubarb - great to have you here and I'm sure you will enjoy it very much!

What brushes and soaps do you use?

Thank you, alfredus. At the moment I am into some Shaver Heaven soaps (especially the malt and choc scented stuff), but like using Proraso red and green, Dr Jon (Bonny Ann to try), but really looking to expand the soaps - just not sure of the direction. Right now I am thinking of exploring tallow based soaps and some European (maybe Italian) soaps but definitely some Razo-Rock is on the horizon. As for brushes I am alternating between an Excelsior 1305 Semogue 1250. But always open to suggestions.

Obsession? You will fit in real well around here @Blubarb !!

Welcome mate and enjoy the fun :)

Hello there @Blurburb

Razorock have a fantastic Italian soap called "Santa Maria del Fiore Firenze Sapone Da Barba" that I can recommend to you.

What are you thinking in terms of "branching" out with soaps? Scent? Manufacturer? "Different"? Location made? Ingredients?

There's a triple milled hard soap made by an Italian artisan called "Saponifico Varesino" that I'd recommend to you. It's a veggie soap but behaves like a tallow soap. You can get it locally or direct.

Plenty more soaps to try from around the world...

Thank you, filobiblic. I have heard of "Saponifico Varesino" and it was on my list - but very expensive I think from memory. "Santa Maria del Fiore Firenze Sapone Da Barba" definitely have to look into that. I think I am out to try anything new, scents, locations, etc. I am pretty shallow when it comes to trying out different soaps at the moment - nice tin cover and good sounding smell and I'll buy and then go from there...

Often a good artisan product -especially from so far away- carries an appropriate price tag.

There's often opportunities for samples if you're just after a chance to try something. One such opportunity is the Travelling Shave Box from P&C. Another is to meet up with other wet shavers locally and swap gear.

I'll send you a sample of the RR Firenze soap if you're interested. Send me a PM with your address and I'll put some into an envelope.

Draco-Noir had an interesting soap for SOTD Catie's Bubbles - Un Jour Gris - haven't heard of this will look into it.

Caties are great vegan soaps, not too dissimilar to Shaver Heaven. I used their LTV today before heading to a bbq picnic as it's a great fresh scent. Heaps of awesome tallow soap makers around though. Keep your eyes on SOTD and yell out when you see something you'd like a sample of :)

Thanks, Korbz. Great advice. Will do.
