Well I finally got the chance to take my Merkur HD for a spin just now for my maiden DE shave. Aside from two small nicks, it all went rather smoothly and the end result is a hell of a lot smoother than I have had from a cartridge set up in some time - SWMBO is pretty impressed too.

Need to work on my lather a bit more and finesse technique as I can feel a fee sub par spots, but all in all pretty happy with my first shot and a far better result already!!

Wow, sounds like a good start. My results on the first try were worse but I kept plugging away regardless. But it looks like you got pretty good start.
 
I found my first shave to be pretty good as I kept rolling the 'Apply no pressure' mantra through my head. The second shave was nowhere near as pleasant as my confidence level had exceeded my skill level. Add to the fact I had a worse lather the second time around and I needed to leave my face alone for 3 days for it to recover.

Sounds like a good start, but keep in mind that you will have a bad shave in the future. It's all a part of the learning.
