Just got into wet shaving

Hmm well with my second try, i ended up with a very thick layer but i think i didn't use enough water and it was too solid to shave properly with.

Any tips for getting the right balance of water and soap?

This is the best place to start - then just add a little more water until you get it right. It will happen!
 
It's a learning curve Question but the best way to go from here is to make a too wet lather.

You have too dry under your belt, once you have too wet you'll know that the right result is somewhere in between.

I find I typically have a slightly drier lather for pass one (more cushion) and take the lather slicker and slicker for subsequent passes. You need to do it a fair bit before you work out what you like personally and how to get there reliably.
 
Thanks for all the advice, i think im starting to get the hang of it. I think im going to need a new brush at some point though...the $1 brush i bought works, but the hairs keep breaking off into the tub of cella :(. Any ideas on how to pick a new brush? So far ive heard that boars are good at the lower price points...
 
Boars are bang for buck, badgers for luxury. Both are soft to use, but feel a bit different. Have a look at Omegas at Connaught shaving. They are great brushes and cheap. I think the 10005 is hard to go wrong with.
 
At the risk of being abused - the re-knotted brushes I have for sale are a great badger brush at a good price - ask others who will confirm.

The Erskine and Hoffritz would be a great all-round brush - the Culmak good for father lathering IMHO - see here

Are loading off a puck and face lathering?

Agreed. I've bought a brush from Mark and it's excellent.
You could do a lot worse. At least you will get honest info from this forum before you buy.

GEE @Mark1966 with all the commision you are going to be paying your profit margins will shrink :) but if you cant beat them then join them The following is a completely unsolicited testimonial (You still have the Bpay details right Mark?)

Mark : Thanks, but that looks out of my price range :(. I checked ebay and saw a couple of boar brushes : http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_...having+brush&_nkw=boar+shaving+brush&_sacat=0 mostly unbranded chinese ones around $7, a unknown semagoue, omega 10018, 19 and 77, and a omega 13522, mostly around the $15 mark.

That's probably my budget at the moment.

Pjotr : Hmm what i do is wet the brush and swirl it in the tub to get a lather going, then apply to face.
 
Probably avoid the cheap chinese ones, they look shoddy. $15 for a brush is reasonable if it's second hand. I got a Semogue 1800 for $20 or so delivered.

Agreed.

There's cheap. And there's cheap shit.

As for lathering, don't use a wet brush. wet it then shake it out. It news to be damp. Wet brushes make sloppy thin lather.

I chanced upon some US posts saying they got brand new omegas for like $7? But i guess theres no way for us to get something that cheap here...

And does anyone happen to know the difference between the Omega 10018, 19, 77 and 13522? It's not just the handle right?

Edit : Might just be me but after i wash off the Cella soap, i find that my skin feels pretty dried out and sensitive. Never experienced this while shaving with canned gels before, is this normal?

Semogue looks a 1460. Ok, but I'm not one to ask about them after (I believe) flushing my money on 6 of them. Vintage scent sell them. Shaving.ie might have a few.

Most of those Omegas are going to be very similar, yes cheaper handle = cheaper brush. But don't try and buy from Shoebox shave, they will want min $25 order and the postage will work out about that too

But, really don't over think it. Any Omega or Semogue is going to be fine. Omegas are really what boards are about IMO.
 
Yea...postage to AUS is a killer, seems really easy to get free postage in the US or Europe.
