mr626's four blade review: (Perma-Sharp, Astra Blue, Treet Plat., Bic Chrome Plat.)

Mid-way check in for the Perma-Sharps.

These are impressive. I'll elaborate further in my next post, but these are certainly the best of the four blades I've been trying.

Here is the starting combo I've been using to test them.



Have just switched over to the 1940s SS for the second blade.
 
Been using a PSS too. Just finished shave no three. Got a couple left I think. Not as smooth as a vintage Shick or Gillette but a very good blade. One of the better ones still in production I'd say.

Okay gents time for me to wrap this up. Thanks for sticking with me for the ride- I know it has been long and drawn out.

The Perma-Sharp Super. I like everything about this blade, including the retro packaging and lack of glue dots :laugh: To elaborate a bit more:

Sharpness: Very. I'd put them just below Feathers for sharpness. I appreciate a sharp blade and I know immediately if a blade isn't sharp enough for me (due to steel wool stubble). The Perma-Sharps pass all tests with flying colours
Smoothness: Quite. Glides across the face with little effort and no irritation. Similar results in both the Slim and the Super Speed. Consistently smooth, unlike some blades that become less smooth over time (after the coating wears off?).
Longevity: Impressive. I didn't push it in the Slim, but in the Super Speed I easily got 5 shaves out of it. I didn't notice a slight reduction in sharpness, but nothing uncomfortable.
Other: Price wise you pay a bit more for these, but I think its worth it. As mentioned, I'm a fan of the simple, retro packaging- reminds me a little of the old Gillette adverts. And yes, I do appreciate the lack of 'glue dots'

Overall score for Perma-Sharp: 8.5/10

To summarise my overall experience with these blades:

Treet: great bang for buck
Bic: cheap, but underwhelming
Astra Blue: above average, but nothing special
Perma-Sharp: great, but you pay for it

There you have it. Hope this little experiment has been of interest. I will continue to use these blades in my various razors (particularly the Treets and the Perma-Sharps) and I may even update this thread from time to time with revised findings. It was good fun to try out a bunch of new blades. As you might have guessed, my pick of the bunch is the Perma-Sharp (somewhat expected), but I'd also give an honourable mention to the Treets has a great pick if you are really on a budget.
 
Nice one mr626. I'd have agree with your assessment of the PSS but I haven't yet pushed one to 5 or more shaves.

By the way, although I can't complain about my Uncultured Phillistine tag I much prefer Bakelite Boy.

Yeah that could work but I think the phillistine tag is implied in Bakelite Boy. What happened to your plans of becoming a Bakelite Boy too? Just think, you could wear the "Bakelite Boy 2" tag.

I think I prefer Drubbings First to Pjs second. Haven't got around to tipping up the stash yet but get there I will.
 
Have found a great combo- Treet Platinum in my Red Tip SS. Very comfortable, well performing combo. Was able to get 5 shaves with this, could probably have gone to 6.

Treet continues to impress- very good bang for buck
 
Where do the Treets come from? Do they have a factory of their own or are they made by someone and re-branded?

Treet Corp. is a Pakistani company that has been around for ages. The Treet blades I have all say 'made in Pakistan' and as far as I know that is the only place they are made.
