New Brush No Lathe

Back to England

I noted that the girl who sits alongside me at work was all excited and she let me know that her parents from England were coming over at Christmas to visit her. What better souvenir for her father to take back to England than a feral buffalo handled shave brush. My weekend's effort:

Maggie’s Blank No 3 – Wee Magic

In the yellow top of the blank I could see what looked like glitter, pieces of something, flat and about five mm long and a couple of mm wide, that took my eye. That paper cup is difficult to remove with the Dremel so I thought that I might be able to cut it off with a chisel. In the humidity my chisel was rusted and blunt but it did not take long to remove the cup. Now if I sharpened the chisel, I might just be able to remove some of the excess material without getting myself covered in white powder; to my delight that worked also. One side of the blank and the bottom was not much more than glitter however the other side was resin. By using the chisel I was able to pear the glitter side down and not touch the mainly resin side. As the glitter was removed there were visible air pockets underneath, it is going to be touch and go as to if I get a handle out of this blank. With nothing to lose but my time I kept going till I had the blank down to where I could get to work with the Dremel. Still a 50/50 chance of a handle but I kept on going.

In my quest for the perfect brush I wanted to go smaller so I ordered a couple of Whipped Dog High Mountain Knots, 20mm. They are small but that was the initial idea. As the handle materialized in front of my eyes, there is a lot less glitter but some remains. There are a couple of small imperfections in the handle from the air pockets, however I’m pleased overall with the result. Like everyone I strive for perfection and to get the best out of the material I’m using. I can see the imperfections but everyone I’ve showed the handle to has not been able to find anything wrong.

Wee Magic. I actually used this brush this morning and I’m even more convinced now that I’m going the right way by going to smaller diameter knots. It worked well and can only improve with use.

Smaller knots have been my go to lately @Errol and they shine when it comes to delivering the goods. This is another Psychedelic pour by Maggie and one that would appeal to children as well. It reminds me of fantasy worlds, fairies, goblins and wizards, very cool. Love the work done on the Brush and the shape of the handle, top notch buddy.

Maggie's Magical Kaleidoscope, that's what I would call it.
