Old Spice shaving mug (are they useful?)

Was looking at a later made Old Spice shaving mug.
Has the 'Recovery' and 'Grand Turk' ships on it (so that's mid '70 - '92 ish).
I have used a wee bowl before but maybe this mug would be better for lathering? It has nice wee ridges in the base to help whip up a lather.
Anyone used one of these mugs?
These are the smallest Old Spice mug (hold about 3.5oz soap puck).
Waste of time, or (at best) just a wee 'treasure' to have in the den?

Not meant for lathering as such. The ridges are designed to hold a puck of soap in place. Lather on top of the soap. Same idea as a MWF dish.
 
I have had a dozen or so, they are pretty cool bits of history.
I gave most away, they are great if you use soap that size, many soaps are not this size.
 
Tip:
To repurpose an Old Spice mug into a ridged shaving mug, carefully make a few lines of baking soda in the bottom. Then add a few drops of Instant glue to each line. Presto, a ridged shaving mug!
 
That's an interesting approach, never heard of that one. I did "improve" one mug by adding blobs of Sugru to the bottom to make it a bit like the Rover bowl though...
 
Just occurred to me that I could use a 3D printer and make an insert to drop into the bottom of the mug.
Make it with some nice 'nobbly' bits, and job done?
A 'firmish' fit so it won't spin around, or a drop or two of silicon?
