I'm not one who likes to change razors too much but I cannot see any other way to repair my old Velvet razor than to do a bit of panel beating and getting the cap replated. Can anyone recommend a company in Australia for replating the cap. Secondly is there a chemical method to clear the old plating off or is it a mechanical removal. Any help would be appreciated.
 
I'm not sure if Dave actually does any polishing/smoothing though (the 'mechanical' side of things).
He may just replate only, in which case you will need to have it all buffed and smooth before sending it to him.
Maybe ask Dave first. The old plating is normally removed by applying a reverse current in the plating tank, and this takes your plating off to deposit it on the other anode.
So, I'm reasonably sure that removing the old plating is not too big a concern for you, but the actual panel beating and 'wet & dry' sanding/smoothing work will be.
 
Thanks @SpeedyPC & @Blackie. Your assistance is much appreciated. I’m pretty confident of being able to press the dent out and cleaning up the area with a bit of fine wet & dry. One thing is certain, I don’t have anything to loose.

They quoted me $80 plus gst or there abouts for my fatboy replate. They say they have done razors in the past. I'll be using them in October.

With a mechanical razor such as the fatboy, do you have to disassemble it before sending to them or will they do that/reassemble for you?
 
I asked Dave at Restored Razors about that very thing. He does not strip them down. Just cleans and replates them.
Other replaters may take the time to dismantle the razor but that can be a whole new can of worms.
 
Thanks @Chad & @Spyne, it’s good to know there are companies in Australia who are willing to replate a razor.

I have been in contact with Dave and will sent the razor over to him as is. Dave said he has a Velvet exactly the same that has the same dent in the cap. I’m not sure it is manufactured that way because the nickel is crazed around the dent and the cap does not sit flat. I’ve seen a photo of another Velvet and the cap on that one is smooth. Anyhow Dave, it will soon be on the way and I’ll find out.
 
My fatboy is a 61 and as im aware that's not stripped down easily compared to the first years. Mines had soak after soak and mechanically is flawless. I'd be happy with just a replate without the strippingof parts especially when its a plating shop not a razor service.

Let us know how your razor turns outand total costs. I'll be doing all this later on in the year.
