Shave of the day 2013

I have used one each of the schick and the spoiler, but my preference has been the spoiler so far. The first schick I tried just didn't do much for me, although it did last a while, whereas the spoiler was noticeably smoother than anything else I had used recently.

That's been general feeling too Eggy.

In saying that though I still have a few packs of Schicks floating around :/

Not sure what you mean. The Spoiler is rough/blunt! Can somebody send in the shaving police/CIA/FBI mob please.

No I mean it is top shelf blade but it is sharper and less smooth than PSS.

I get 6 shaves easy from PSS and the spoiler did have a bit of an easy run with not having to deal with the moustache and chin for a few of it's early shaves.

I have to admit I'm really liking the PSS too. Doing a side by side with a Shick right now. After two shaves apiece they're neck on neck.

I always liked you PJ. Such remarkable common-sense!

Pretty good shave but I think I'll open the slim up to 7 for the next go around. Been a long time since I beat the Derby drum. It's certainly not the worst thing out there...does pale a bit compared to the vintage blades of late though. Definitely not so good on the neck in terms of hair removal - more work required. Well a bit of fun for 3 shaves and then maybe something Russian :D

Pleasantly surprised by the Gillette SOC Green blades, I've always perceived them as the worst of this somewhat confusing range but got 4-5 very enjoyable shaves from the first one I tried in a Merkur Slant. Hence despite having for a while I'd not touched them.

Also was very impressed with the vintage Personna blades that came around as part of the travelling bag (2012 version) - very smooth and I believe I got around 6-7 good shaves out of it before deciding discretion was the better part of valour. Lovely blade and thanks to whoever provided it. :-)

Had a good shave last night, I adjusted my angle a touch and it felt like it was cutting alot smoother. After my last shave i had a few red spots on my upper lip, I don't seem to have them this time. Decided to stick to WTG only on my lower neck, took about 3 goes but i was happy with the result. Lather no problem. This was the forth shave with the Astra blades, time to replace with a new Astra?

Thanks, Jason

Nice work Jason.

I'm not a huge fan of astra SP but I'd say most would pull the plug on them somewhere between 3 and 5 shaves.

Your personal preference will become apparent after you have been through a few blades.

Was given a tub of Macca Root shaving cream from the Body Shop. Very nice stuff and amazingly economical. Haven't yet found an analogous nut with the correct size to describe the volume you need. It's heading towards a pine nut at the moment. Who knows, it might end up at sesame seed. Anyhow that's the good news. The bad news is that I'm in danger of compromising the integrity of my friendship with SYD because I have to admit that the PSS blade is a bit of a disappointment. That might be a strong word but it sort of copped out at the third shave. And on that basis it's...here it comes...a much uva muchness blade. MUM all the way I'm afraid. Sorry SYD! I should, as is the gentlemanly way, say in my opinion or your mileage may....(I fuckin' hate that expression even more so I'm not even going to finish it) but I'm not. So, I'll make a huge consession and give you a smiley thing. I can't even do that. It's ended up near the title somehow.

What razor were you using, PJ? I love my Schick Krona these days because it extends the life of dull blades. I get two extra shaves from most blades, I can get a 4th and 5th shave from a PSS using it or my dad's Gillette Knack (also very mild). Speaking of which, the Knack and a Derby was a great combo for me. Really mild and comfy.

What razor were you using, PJ?..........

The only DE I shave with.....a 7O'Clock bakelite. Nothing comes close as far as I'm concerned. I can use it with any blade. I'm not a believer in the different razor/blade combination theory. If a razor doesn't work for me it doesn't matter what blade I shove in.

I might try a fourth shave with it but I'm a bit hesitant. Sounded rough. Almost as loud as an SE. Shave wasn't disastrous but far from comfortable. Thought it might have been the new cream but I've used so many different shaving soaps/creams that I can quite accurately tell bad from good.

This arrived with some of my money back from the Premium Omega from a few weeks back.

I'd guessed it was the knot in my old faithful, the 10005, in a speccier handle, and turns out it probably is. $10 of Omegas finest. The 05 has notably softened over the last 2 years but still plenty useable. Just good to have two, so I can start with a bone dry one if I want. Gave it a good wash and a run with Cella. Works a treat, break in schmake in.

Also picked up some TOBS sandalwood soap. Not that flash so far. The scent is barely there, it lathers fine with a bit of work, but I've not had two of the best shaves with it. Could be just needing to soften up some. I abuse hard soap; I leave a little water on the stuff daily, until it starts to soften. That alone would get me vilified elsewhere.

I can't hold anything against you PJ.

I don't expect the PSS to perform in something from "My First Shave-Kit" by Fisher Price.

When you are allowed to wear big boy pants I'll hook you up with a "proper razor" :P:P

Oh my god, another anti-bakelite-ite! I've encountered nothing but prejudice in that regard. It's sad and lonely.

Not sure if I mentioned this but whilst in Tassie last weekend I took a new Mach 3 and a Smoggie boar and a tube of La Toja.

I only took a cart because it was carry on luggage only and I didn't want to risk having a DE confiscated at the gate.

I had one shave with this monstrosity and then gave it to my dear old dad who knows not what he is missing out on.

So I guess this is an "anti" shave of the day as it was so dreadful.

I could have done four passes and not gotten a clean smooth shave, I reckon.

I've not used a cart in a few years; in fact not since I started this DE shaving (inspired and guided by RM).

It felt plastic and cheap and no feedback whatsoever. It felt like I was dragging a plastic spork over my face.

So I went without a shave the rest of my stay in Tassie. First thing I did when I got back to the land of the living was a long hot shower (to wash the Hobart off me) and have a glorious shave.

R41
new Shark for two passes.
Triumph and Disaster shave cream
Semogue Badger

finished nicely with Jermyn St AS.

It was only two passes but it absolutely removed all whiskers and felt bloody amazing after the shitty cart experience. I knew they were bad but seriously, if you ever start to take a DE or SE for granted, go use a cart for a couple days. It restores your love of real shaving.

Yes, they were a Monsta special eBay pickup. Were nice blades indeed. I still have a few around, and I can squeeze nearly 10 shaves out of them as long as I am careful (slow) on the neck.

Wicked sharp to start with too. Best on shave 2 & 3.

There's an eBay item up now with what I think to be similar. Posted in the 'Heads Up' section.

Meanwhile I have just been going along with my few vintage blades of late and pretty much only using the Proraso Sandalwood tube. Occasionally reaching for the Jermyn St, or the Arko for a change.

A few? Are you kidding me? That's like Mark saying he's shaving with a Gillette razor from his miserable little collection.
