Schick still shaving very easily. Went through 5 days of whiskers like there was nothing there.

Mark there is obviously no collectibility in a 34C but dammit man you should have one to shave with. They are very good.

Hardcore on the shavette Lynchy!

Hmmm yes, I've had ten or so attempts with the cheapo Shavette now and got the furthest yet yesterday - thats both cheeks done, a bit of my neck and a bit of my chin - but thats all - I literally had to stop as it was just feeling REALLY dangerous to go any further. Like you know when you're doing something and some neanderthal impulse is in you warning that significant damage/bloodletting is possible if you go any further.

I've really found it near impossible to get any further as you can't cut the tougher hair around my chin etc without getting a 'moving' start with the shavette, but this means dragging it down and it really feels like with one PULL of a hair it could marginally change path and come IN more than I'd like and the result is a BIG cut.

Jawline is just impossible to master the angle on plus the hairs are tougher here too and under the nose, around lips also feels VERY uneasy.

I've been very careful and feel I have a good technique (zero cuts yet from all those starts) - but progressing any further feels VERY tricky - and almost too dangerous to make the risk vs reward portion of using it viable. My wife was freaking mystified as she asked me,"Does that give you a closer shave?" ....my response,"Ummm well not really"......."Her retort,"So what are you using it for?".....tough to counter this and I did say it was largely just to be able to SAY one can shave this way and also to experience it but it's tough to see the real feasibility of it.

The shavette is a simple dip your toes taste without any of the extra hassle but I have to say I really dunno......I was sold on DE shaving after a few goes but this is struggling to get by on the 'mystique' of it even after near a dozen uses.....haha and I hate to think what my confidence level in it will be when I eventually get a decent cut from it, which is surely inevitable at some point.

I find myself getting to where it's all too hard in the shave and then knocking the rest off including the ATG pass (haven't managed to try/do this yet even on the cheeks with the shavette) and thats SOOOOO fast and easy compared to the shavette. That said I used a Rapira Swedish SUper Steel last night (3rd use I think) and the bloody thing was nasty.....lil weepers from it all over. The shavette was smirking at me from it's corner!

I suspect whilst I really LIKE the IDEA of using a straight it'll end up being nothing more than that, with the idea a lot better than reality - especially when you factor in that you've got to get a shave ready one which kinda means either buying froma few folks or sending off after to a Honing expert - and then you've got to get a good strop etc and periodically get re-honed. Dunno it does seem to marry in with the feedback I've heard from DE folks which is that they went back to DE's as the straights were just a tad much trouble in comparison.

Don't get me wrong I can completely see why one would love them BUT it's kinda like hugging a cactus for most people. :-)

After a couple of unpleasant shaves with the Super Adjustable was back to my trusted bakelite three piece with Shick on 10 shaves. Total bliss! These blades blow me away.

I haven't tried a shavette but my gut feel is they are a dissimilar experience to shaving with a proper straight razor. I was scared as shit when i started with a straight but got comfortable enough to shave around the chin etc in just a few shaves.

respect it but don't fear it.

I managed to complete the full WTG pass, chin, neck and all.

I will try it again in time.

I will second Nick in that I like the idea of straight razor shaving.

Only time will tell I suppose.

I liked the idea of it too, but the work involved in sharpening, and then honing the blade regularly put me off.

I ended up buying a vintage blade off the bay, tried cleaning it up with some autosol, and seeing if it would hone using a box strop.

It felt like far too much effort would be involved, and that I would probably end up killing myself with it, so in the end I pif'ed it here to GT.

He hasn't killed himself with it yet, so I presume he also has it sitting in a box somewhere, wondering what to do with it like I did. I guess he has more to lose if it works out htat the straight is mightier than the TM method.

Got rid of the Shick after 13 shaves. I could have got a few more out of it but as I'm not living on a desert island and it was turning in to a fair amount of work decided to ditch it and loaded up a spoiler (one of GTs cheapos). The spoiler feels sharper. Hoping it'll last just as long. For the rest.....lots of good ol' Germanic goodness lately with Tabac soap and cream and Irish Moos. I really am surprised Tabac cream doesn't get talked about more often. It's not only available in real life shops (you know, those old fashioned institutions where you walk in, find a physical manifestation of the object you desire and pay with money, sometimes even real money!) it also has to be one of the smoothest, glideyest shaving stuff I've used. Really nice scent too. I don't think it resembles the Tabac scent that much either.

Is it really fair to compare a brand new blade with one that has just gone through 13 shaves? If it was me, I would have forgotten by now how sharp that first shave felt.

OK, what I meant was that the Spoiler on it's first shave feels sharper than the Shick on it's first (as far as I can remember).

Do they still exist? Oh yeah, The Shaver Shop ...

Schick is looking good for a few more shaves yet. No discernible drop in performance from shaves 2-5 for me.

Tabac Cream eh PJ...? Any other punters prepared to vouch for it?

Don't you trust me SYD? It's Tabac, it's German, it's good. It's my summertime cream. Very nice, fresh scent. Next time we meet I'll give you a taster. On the other hand if you buy a tube and don't like it I'll buy it off you.

Love it!

The stick and a/s is very much a winter staple for me but if I recall the cream is quite different - possibly a summer experience.

I like Tabac too, I find the cream to be really slick and provide loads of glide. It's pretty similar to the Omega cream I think, maybe because they both have glycerine in them.

Here's a question for you fellas. It's been consistently hot in Melbourne and during my shave last night I noticed that my TOBS Jermyn is looking runnier and softer than originally. Anyone had a cream 'melt' on them before? It still worked okay, but it's at the consistency of melted ice cream. Stick it in the fridge maybe?

Yep........a solid performer!

That's a death knell!!!

It's always hot here! Must admit have never noticed cream melting on me but maybe that's the consistency we're used to here.
