The R41 Chronicals

Brush: Shavemac 177 silvertip
Soap/Cream: Panna Crema Lavendotto (scuttle lathered) / TOBS St Jermyn
Razor: Muhle R41 (2013 version)
Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium - fresh blade
After-shave: Proraso splash

The brush, razor and soap (Panna) were just recently acquired via another forum, from a chap in Adelaide, and used by me for the first time this morning. The R41 will be used for an extensive period of time until it's as comfortable to use as my Merkur 34C.

The Shavemac 177 is the first silvertip badger brush that I have owned but not the first I have experienced. This one has the softest tips compared to my other brushes, with virtually no scritch. It's going to take a bit of getting use too because I like a bit of scrub in my brushes. Previous silvertip experienced is a gorgeous PILS, owned by my cousin, that is much denser with more backbone. Lathering the Panna Crema in my scuttle was a complete disaster - it looked nice in the scuttle however it mostly dissipated on my face. Being in a bit of a hurry ( take note @JugV2 ) I squeezed some TOBS St Jermyn into the brush and directly lathered to my face. Recovered beautifully. Notched up my first success with St Jermyn!

Now the shave. The aggressive reputation of the R41 made me nervous but it sharpened up my focus and attention to detail. The glide of the razor felt quite strange due to my years of using mild, flat bar designs. I have an Australian-made vintage OC but it's a pussycat. The first pass, WTG, resulted in a very close removal of the 3-day stubble (I never shave on weekends) albeit with a couple of weepers on my Adams Apple. There was tugging and some roughness under the nose. Overall not too bad. I applied a lighter touch on the 2nd pass, ATG, and got through that without any grief. The result was a close and efficient shave. I had imagined drawing more blood and post-shave irritation. Finished off with a hot & cold rinse and my trusty Proraso splash.

Tomorrow morning I will try a different approach to getting a lather from the Panna Crema. Refine my approach to the Adams Apple and the area under the nose. The true test with the R41 will come in the following days as Monday shaves are always easy due to the longer stubble.

Hadn't shaved for a while and had a bit of whisker whacking to perform. Opened the slim right up to help with clogging, gee the Slim is a tool when you let it breathe! Effortless removal of a fair lump of hair.

As another poster mentioned...great shave after a bit of a break. This is R41 close but with no heart in the throat moments!

Brush: Simpson Duke 3
Soap/Cream: Panna Crema Lavendotto (bowl lathered)
Razor: Muhle R41 (2013 version)
Blade: Polsilver Super Iridium (2)
After-shave: Castle Forbes Lavender AS balm

Bowl lathered Panna Crema with The Duke and an AESOP bowl. I added a layer of water into the Panna to soften the soap. The lather wasn't at the thick consistency that I like but it was a big improvement on my poor showing yesterday. No weepers this time due to a lighter touch and more time. I've still got a lot of learning to go with the R41 but its a lot of fun. I'm going to work through my stash of blades until I find the sweetspot match with the razor. Anybody got their R41 favourite blade that I should try next?

The scent of the Panna Crema is interesting but certainly not one of a my favourites. Its smells "lemony" to me but this is their description is "A perfect herbal blend of lavender and bergamot. Lavender has antidepressant and calming properties, while bergamot is a mild anesthetic that can soothe minor shaving cuts". Meh, just marketing tripe.

Finished with the standard hot & cold water rinse and some CF Lavender balm.

Now when is that Arko going to arrive?

Back home in chilly CBR - at least until Thursday driving to the 'Gong and Friday flying back to SYD again!

I tell my family one of the reasons I always fly QF is that at least if I die I will be famous - once of the first people killed on QF ....

They don't seem to appreciate that thought :(
 
Actually, Qantas's record with safetly is less than stellar with prop and turboprop planes.
It's the invention of turbines which changed the game for them.
Reassuring information I'm sure :P

Yeah doesn't faze me at all - if I die I will not care.

Post 'Rain Man' though I'm fairly confident about the publicity I'd get if we went down.

After-shave: Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve

I don't reach for the P.160 often but wonder why that it when I do. It truly is a GREAT SOAP!

First thing is the smell, just like Nonna's biscotti (that is if I had a Nonna and if she made biscotti), then the lather - it is fantastic, easy to make, glides well, just wonderful. Enjoy it in the travelling box guys. If you really like it you can get a 1 kg brick here.

How to finish off after such a wonderful shave? I wanted something classic, something unique, something worthy. I couldn't go past the Pinaud Clubman Special Reserve. I couldn't go past this 'bold, masculine fragrance'!
 
Nice one Mark. Did you purchase the Clubman Reserve directly from Pinaud?
 
Sounds nice. Of course I can't purchase online because they won't ship to Oz. Looking forward to the box.

I really don't like Clubman anyway. I guess my $8 irony was too subtle. In fact, my whole cologne sojourn was short lived. I'm not metro enough for man perfume...

Way OT I know but I was wondering if you and I were in a plane @Mark1966 and the wings fell off would your final thought be "Shit I hope I am right" and more interestingly would mine be "Shit I hope he was right". :) Just a thought for the day.
