Shave of the Day 2015

Shave #8 on the current GEM SS blade and still 2 pass BBS. Gotta love the SE blades.
Today's weapon of choice in the rotation was the Micromatic Open comb. Now this razor isn't as vicious as made out to be but an extra notch on the attention belt will go along way to not giving yourself a cut. I didn't fly around my face but it didn't take much longer. The MMOC could easily be a daily shaver once you adapted to its characteristics. The 1924 flat comb and the MMOC have a similar blade feeling but the 1924 seems just slightly less attention seeking. I got a bee in my bonnet yesterday so put together a small 70gm test of a new recipe for shaving soap that has been nagging me for a couple of days. This one goes back to using a percentage of Tallow along with Avocado, Castor and Coconut oils. It is excellent for face lathering. As it is a hot process soap it is basically ready to use the next morning.

2 Pass BBS.
No cuts, weepers or irritation.
I think there is still life in the blade so I think I will treat myself to a 1924 shave with the blade tomorrow. Shave [#9]

Brush: Semouge Mistura
Soap: B&M Fougere
Razor: Ever Ready 1924
Blade: GEM SS (4)
Postshave: Thayers Witch Hazel
Aftershave: L'Occtitane Verdon Splash, L'Occitaine Cedre & Oranger After Shave Balm

My best effort with the 1924, without doubt. So important to get the lather just right when using this razor. You need every bit of cushion and slickness. The result was superb.

...and yes, I did go L'Occitane shopping :)

Melissa from Washpool Farm Soaperie sent me her update Test Soap (#3) unannounced. I'd already had a few shaves with the soap I ordered (Test Batch #2). Here is a comparison of the two soaps side-by-side.

I'm still testing out this soap and will withhold any comments until I am a few shaves down. I'll add some basic comments on the thread of Washpool Farm Shaving Soap.

I'm glad you are making progress with the 1924. When you get it right it is a great razor. A good lather is important and everything clicks, it is a very close shave with very little effort.

Mastro Livi Perugia 13.12.14, 15/16 Full Hollow, Spanish Point

With this unexpected heat we have in Milan in these days, I was thinking about having a refreshing shave and therefore I thought it was the right occasion for using my Thyrrenus after shave. With its refreshing and cooling effect, it worked great and gave me a little relief. This Mastro Livi Perugia 13.12.14 straight razor was the perfect companion for a magnificent shave, deep and close as usual, always impeccable in giving the best and luxurious shaving experience. And now, I am ready to face the Milanese heat, at least for a little while.

...and so the journey begins. @Mark provided his special TLC on this beautiful blade.

As for the shave? Don't ask. My hand just wouldn't cooperate with what my mind was willing it to do. Tried it this way and that way but it turned into a dogs breakfast. It felt good when I managed to get blade to face but I've clearly got some work to do.

My hat off to the guys who use straights.

1924 was such a good year - so I'm told. Well it was for razors and in today's rotation it was the 1924. Today was probably the last shave on the current GEM SS blade using the Ever Ready 1924. The blade didn't tug or any nasty DE like habit, it just didn't cut quite as efficiently. So 2 and a half passes today for DFS. No blood or irritation but it was a bit like a car needing a tune up. Still very smooth but lacking the zip and power it had yesterday.

If I'm game and only to see how the current GEM Personna SS perform I will try the current blade in my FW tomorrow for shave #10.

Very nice looking blade but you are far more adventurous than I am. :)

A beautiful blade indeed!

Keep at it! Shaving with a str8 takes time and perseverance. It's a challenge to master and requires new skills to learn. I think it's achievable if you want to master it.

The first few weeks it goes up and down with good shave and bad. After a while it becomes more comfortable and then it clicks a bit more. After 30-40 shaves under my belt it's become much more straight forward and natural. There's still a long way to go but it's become very comfortable.

My opinion is that if you want to learn a str8 you ought to use it every shave (even if just cheeks or a single pass) rather than weekly. You'll build muscle memory and technique faster that way.

Keep going! A beautiful blade like that deserves to be used. [emoji106]

@Lifes a Peach I'm glad to see that you're making good use of it, it is a beautiful blade indeed, I rate the quality very highly compared to some shonky steel with new expensive blades that I've dealt with the past couple of days.
@filobiblic is right, if time allows do a one pass every shave or two to get used to it a lot quicker, when you're at a good comfortable level you'll regret not starting earlier. Don't be in a rush to chase a BBS with it, it will find you :)
