First shave with this curiosity (and first with a slant). I didn't know if there is any special technique required, but decided to bung a blade in and have a go. There is a considerable amount of torque applied to the blade, and you feel the cap wants to spring off the base when you push them together. Screws down nice and tight though, and the base plate has a slight recess for the top of the handle a la Blackbird or Nodachi. It very much put me in mind of my other Fatip, the Grande OC. Quite smooth, a little blade feel but not too much, and an easy comfortable shave. I found the handle a tad slippery but apart from that no issues. I will reserve further judgement until I've tried a few different blades.

A new vintage razor

It has been a week since my surgery, and just over a week since my last shave. One of my hands has been out of action to avoid getting it wet. A new razor arrived a day before the surgery and has sat on my desk waiting for it’s inaugural use on my skin.

While I know that I need to do a head shave, I couldn’t go another day without shaving. So I just completed a face shave today. It is still a little awkward, but I’m sure that it willl get better once I have full use of it back.

Not knowing how this razor would perform, I kept it on the lowest setting for now, and boy is it aggressive. Could definitely feel the blade, but that may also have to do with week old growth and an unknown razor.

With an initial wet lather of Kaizen, it soon firmed up into shiny peaks before I started my first pass. With a full face of lather, I took the first stroke with a shaking hand. I knew the razor was aggressive, just how aggressive?

Finished up the first pass, and as normal with a new razor, nicked the face blemish I have. Until I work out how a razor behaves, I always have that happen.

Moved onto a second pass, and finished off the shave. It isn’t as smooth as I expected, but with a new razor, it did a fairly good job. I may have to work on my technique with this razor, a milder blade, and maybe just more use of the surgery hand.

All up, a decent shave with some manoeuvrable limitations due to my hand, but definitely going to use this razor again.

Shave with Hendrix Classics & Co (HC&C) – BEYOND THE VOID. HC&C is a vegetal based soap from Nashville, TN. Scent description: “Bergamot and Grapefruit lend to this masculine fragrance with notes of amber, sandalwood, patchouli, and oakmoss.”

Shave Result: This was my first time using the HC&C soap base and it generated a beautiful lather that was medium density, rich, yogurty and stable from my normal half teaspoon of soap squashed into my bowl. The lather performance was also excellent in all attributes, a solid Tier 2 performer in my book. I get a familiar masculine well blended scent coming off the lather, I can detect notes of citrus, sandalwood and patchouli, scent strength is medium. Even though the blade gap looks menacing in the Yaqi razor the shave result was quite mild, I use an angle just little back from a cap ride and part ride the cap. I rate this razor in the mild-medium range aggression/efficiency. The Perma-Sharp blade is not one of my favourite blades and felt a bit rough in this razor. Overall a DFS with irritation Level 2 (a few weepers).

This was about my 7th or 8th straight shave, and I'm a bit chuffed to say that I covered 95% of my target area!
I'm starting to get the feel of the blade, and am now sure my earlier issues were merely bad technique (too steep).
Another first, a little nick from the straight and a couple of tiny weepers; I've had worse. Very pleasing to do a tidy up pass with
the Nodachi and find not much work to do, but I am yet to tackle the moustache area so room for improvement. No rush there!
