Vision Collision - how I have missed you!

Been trying the Valobra sample I was sent. Great lather, smell less so. Reminds me a little of MWF but I see no reason to get any.

The sample was great to have though
 
Micromatic clog pruf, has there been a better razor ever made (people with no thick stubble, and like mild razors need not answer)
MWF soap.
Horsey brush.

I like this brush. I bought one of the smaller ones. Very scritchy at the tips when new, definitely not as bad now with the 4th shave, but still there.
I don't like how soft boars feel like a paint brush, may as well buy a 1" brush from bunnings. I don't like how badgers need a lot of hair to get 'backbone', so cheap badgers aren't that great - though a simpson badger is normally awesome.

This horsey brush is small, picks up a hard soap like MWF easily (even though it doesn't look like it is at the time), and makes so much lather it is flowing over the handle.

I agree with you there Pablo . Of the three SEs in my toolbox, Featherweight ClogPruf and Bullet Tip, the Clogpruf is the pick of the bunch.
I am also beginning to prefer Boar brushes to Badger so must try to acquire some more.

I won't be getting any Valobra after the remains of this stick are gone. The lather is without doubt one of the best. How strange, unlike Valobra I love the scent of MWF.

Thats the problem with badger. The hair is so thin compared to boar that you need loads of them to get any backbone. A thin badger brush is very annoying. It quickly becomes a lifeless mop. OK if all you really need it for is to paint lather on your face from a bowl but useless if you stick shave. I haven't ever had a real extra stuffed seriously dense badger knot but I can imagine it would be equally annoying given it's propensity to suck up lather and just hold it there.

The horsey is an ideal stick shaving brush.
 
Today I went back to my old trusty T&H badger.

Progress on 3 with 7 O'clock black
La Toja stick
Floid AS

Good lather from the Toja, no overpowering smell and you really can use anything with it as an AS.

After the facerape that was the R41, using the Progress with the Gillette blade felt like I was shaving with an angel's feather. Most enjoyable, and most of all IT FELT BLOODY SAFE.
 
My bag of goodies turned up from Pjotr today, so I got straight on the La Toja / Floid Vigoroso horse.

First time for a stick soap. I thought it had a pleasant enough soapy smell, and lathered nicely enough - although i still only managed enough for a 2 pass shave but I think that was because I had no idea how much to use.

Whoever mentioned cough sweets for the Floid sure wasn't wrong when you first put it on. For those of you who spent any time in the UK, it strongly reminded me of Tunes cough lollies when it first went on... then came the menthol hit and 10 minutes later my cheeks are still feeling it.

Both nice items in my book. How many shaves would you estimate to get out of one of those sticks?
 
Yeah, I dove in the Spanish stuff today.

La Toya - not bad at all. I don't like sticks, so grate mine into a bowl. Generic soap smell, neither interesting or off putting. Nice, very creamy thick lather.

HD, Gillette Yellow. Very happy with the result.

Finished with the Floid. Really missed this stuff. Like the olde smell and the way the cooling creeps up on you. Soothes as well. Good gear.
 
Would you be interested in the italian blue stuff? I saw one guy on ebay selling it for about $15.60 per 400ml. Admittedly postage at $38 for the first bottle wasn't too pleasant, but from what i could make out, postage for extra bottles was free.

So for two bottles it would only be $34.50 for 400ml, or three for $28.30 each.
There may even be a 21% discount for VAT on the bottles.

Then again 1.2l of Floid would go a long long way I imagine.

You always think big. Maybe start with a brush first, before getting your own horse for a brush making production line...

I still love my simpson badger, and smoggy SOC boar which is a tough as, undyed brush.
But the horsey definitely replaces any other boar or badger I have which is small, floppy or soft.

It's because of the bottle/postage issues I've never bothered with the Italian stuff. The last time I punted on 400ml of cheap AS, I still have 389 ml left...

Although, there are 400ml bottles of Proraso around, and that's my No1, so that's something I might do next time. 150ml bottle are $21 locally. So the big bottle is economical for a big user.
 
Not tried the Proraso yet. That has little to no smell doesn't it?

I'm liking both Speick, and Floid (presuming this is a cold and not an allergy) as they have a little scent which lingers for a while. EdC etc just smell overpowering to me now.

I found the La Toja stick to be pretty hard so it's not the easiest one to start stick shaving with. Just rub it all over your stubble and give it a bit more on the chin and cheek areas because it's easier to rub it in in those areas. I have no idea how many shaves you get out of a stick. There is some information regarding this over at, where else but,... YKW. You'll get a lot. With experience it's the most efficient way of using soap because if you use too much and without the "buffer storag" of a bowl, the lather just drips down your face and down the handle of your brush. So, you end up judging the right amount of soap just to void the mess. It also has the advantage of not only being able to see the lather as it develops but also feeling it on your face and hearing it too. A shave ready lather sounds different to one that's too stiff or too sloppy.

I'm so perplexed, especially with my 'new' Simpson in hand as well. How many brushes do I need? A trendy horsey or an undyed boar?

34C and Permasharp Super...like a hot knife through buttah!

You can't go wrong with either. Un undyed boar is invariably amongst the cheaper range in boar brushes so that'll cost you bugger all. I prefer the look of undyed boar and wouldn't know if the process of dying makes any difference to the bristle. Probably does. In the same vein you should go for undyed horsey. It's hardly trendy. There's only three of us on this forum which is about 30% of active posters so actually that makes it really trendy.
 
Back on topic. I'm actually saying that to myself. Sad!!

Lovin' this La Toja.. Thick, creamy, takes loads of water. Easily as good as Cella and, dare I say it, it touching base with my favourite tallow based soaps. Smells good too.

Yep, very good. Nice lather and easy to whip up, if someone told you it was tallow you probably wouldn't argue. Smell is pretty bland though. Probably the whitest lather I've seen. It's almost fluorescent.
