Single edge razors

Although I always state that I'm a user rather than a collector of razors I am slightly guilty of having collected more than I can use on a regular basis. This was however done in the search for the ideal combination. A complete collection of all obscure SE models in number probably wouldn't come close to Mark's TTO collection. Even so there are only half a dozen or so distinctly different head designs just differing in terms of colour, handles and/or brand names. In any case here's my modest quiver of SEs. From left to right:

GEM 1912 travel razor
GEM Baton (identical head to above)
Ever Ready featherweight
Ever Ready Streamline
GEM Micromatic "Flying Wing" (daft name and is generally known as the Bullit Tip)
GEM Micromatic "Clog Pruf" (another daft one but given that this somewhat obscure Germanic name is stamped in the inside of the head it's kept it's name)
GEM Micromatic Open Comb (the only one I never use)
GEM Push Button (referring to the opening and closing mechanism)

I've put o-rings on the Clog pruf and Bullit Tip for ease of use. Both weigh a fair bit. The micromatics are all TTOs the rest, with the exeption of the Push Button, are spring loaded flip tops.

The only ones I'm missing are examples of the early Lather Catchers which have distinctly different head designs. Most of these don't use available SE blades but wedge shaped proprietry blades which are basically slices of straight blades and similarly need sharpening and stropping. From an historical perspective SEs, particularly Lather Catchers, are "straights on a handle" and as such were the first safety razor. The current crop of SEs evolved from there.

In terms of value and collectibility the Streamline (GEM did an identical one known as the Jewel) is up there as it wasn't produced for many years and has a build quality second to none. Even so you'd be able to pick one up for $50-60. The rest you can generally find for $15-20. Anyhow, that's my story.

I've got a couple and I know in the past I'd said I would upload a photo.
Well, here's some more.

Nice stash there pablo. Love the wee little 7 day lather catcher set. They are generally beautifully engraved too.

Yeah, it's a great shaver too. I pretty much stopped using 1912s when I got that one.
Mainly use that and the MM CP.
I get along better with long handled razors for some reason, even if they are light handles.

Ever tried the Bullit Tip? It's a bit less aggressive than the CP but I get great shaves using it. Nice looking razor too.

Do you strop the lather catcher blades or can you use standard SE blades with it?

Never came across the bullet tip.

The lather catcher is a later model that takes disposable blades (maybe doesn't take a wedge at all unless they're very thin?)
Dave seemed to put it at date 1911, the last of the lather catchers. It doesn't have the drop down bar that earlier LCs that could take both wedge and disposable.

Blade is sitting on hooks at the front and spring clip at the rear like a 1912, blade slides under two slots at the side, which is the height of a disposable blade. So unless they've been bent down, wedge blade might not even fit under them in this LC.

But the case appears to have slots for seperate blades. I was assuming it would have had specific blades marked Sunday to Saturday originally.

Maybe that was the style of the time, so same case for wedge or disposable?
I don't think I've even seen a true 7 day set for GEMs with metal handles.

I'm pretty sure the ones with the 'bar' that lowered is the older design that could take both, and this design razor I have was after that one, this one was the last before the 1912.

GEM 7 day sets were probably only the really old pre patented 1900 lather catchers with wooden handles, ie from 1898 like this:
Barbershop "The New Gem Safety Razor" 7-day set, includes 11 pcs in case, all marked "New Gem", some

Before I searched for a GEM 7 day set just then, the only 7 day set I knew of was the the old wilkinson sword sets http://theoriginalsafety.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tr&action=display&thread=244

edit: Of course one day I will be a wedge SE shaver when I get the rolls* sharp enough.

* got about 4 of them, so I could make my own 4 day set, plenty of blades and spare parts.

..........I went for the OCMM and a fresh blade......

Very bad idea! I gave my OCMM to Mark to see if I could scare him a bit. It didn't. He went out and bought 3 hundred blades! I disliked the OCMM. And that's loading a two shave old blade.

Nice bit of SE talk for a change!

The OCMM is amazing. Like the hyped R41 on steriods!

It gave an incredibly smooth shave but you NEED to be careful. That seems to be a fair deal to me.

Anybody want to buy some SE blades BTW???

It's scary aggressive, but I quite like it actually. I want to tame the beast! It's a bit fierce for everyday use, but it's hard to fault the shave.

What other SE's are worth trying? I might keep an eye out on the b/s/t's for some new ones.

Mark, what you say about care is true, though my neck has recovered mostly. Cheeks are still smooth, it's great.

There's the rest of the Micromatic series, the Clop Pruf and the Flying Wing. In aggressiveness the Clog Pruf is a notch down from the Open Comb and the Flying Wing a further notch down. Then of of course there's the standard GEM 1912s or Ever Ready equivalents. And then there's the king of SEs, the Ever ready Streamline or GEM Jewel. I've been through nearly all of them and the Flying Wing (don't know why it's so called as there's no marking on the razor) the Featherweight and the Streamline are all I use. Got a few I can sell. If you're interested give me a PM.

@pablo_h How did you go with the Rolls Razor? I have about 10+ now, and have slowly started restoring them. I have about 4 now which are capable of providing a smooth shave! I LOVE my rolls! Thats why I have so many! :-) I have about 3 now that are used as spare parts due to being damaged during delivery but they have come in handy none the less... quite time consuming getting them shave ready, but once you do, that are awesome!

Pablo's gone quiet for a long time. Sad, as he was one of the few SE razor users on here. Never tied a Rolls Razor. You see them for sale all the time. They must have been popular in their day.

@Pjotr Ah ok... thanks for the heads up.. I have quite a large collection of SE razors now. I just recently got in to the vintage one, but the rolls is one of my favourite.. I think it's more the novelty than anything, but it's an awesome shave once you get it working well. As you've said, trying to find one thats in good shape is a like a needle in a hay stack.. I've had heaps of people pull dodgy's on me and sell me broken ones... but I've managed to work out the quirks...
One of my more recent was a Gillette Wilkinson Sword Empire 7 day Model... Needed a bit of work, but I also love that! It came with a strop that had never been used, so I had to give that some TLC and after that worked a charm... It was missing a few of the "Days" (I think about 2 or 3) but I got all the blades shave ready using the stone from the Rolls! ha.. and it worked!

I also LOVE my Valet Autostrop with Feather Blades... Niicceee...

This makes me miss my Featherweight. Batter up tomorrow!

I'm contemplating PIFing my MMOC. Too dangerous for beginners, do you think?

I PIFed mine. Actually didn't even officially PIF it. I just sent it to Mark unannounced with a "please do not return to sender" sticker. There is nothing scarier than an MMOC with a brand new blades. An R41 doesn't even come close. At a casual glance you could say that the R41 looks fairly stylish until you start looking at the blade gap and exposure but the MMOC just looks unapologetically brutish and evil. If the R41 comes with a health warning the MMOC should be banned by international treaties.

By the way Mong, talking of Mark, he's got some nice Featherweights for sale. Complete with cases. They looked NOS to me.

Ummm yes I think I do have a couple - must break out the MMOC - my first SE I think ....

I was tempted to make an offer when I saw those come in, but I'm trying to be frugal. I just don't use an SE enough to justify buying another, even if I clear out my current ones. Hopefully some lucky rookie has a crack at them, they're a great way to start out on this side of the tracks.

Cracking open this 4 year old thread...

What's your top 5 SE razors?

I know @khun_diddy had been getting stuck into them recently and @bald as is an SE veteran (so too is @gthomas04 ...).
