Several months ago, AccuTec launched the Personna GEM Platinum Diamond Glide Hi-Stainless Japanese Steel double-edge blades. Although I could not track down an official press release from the manufacturer, these US-made blades appear to be the successors to the renowned Personna Comfort Coated (Lab Blue) blades. It is, however, a rather peculiar choice of nomenclature to use "GEM" for a double-edge blade.
They reach the end consumer in a single packaging format: a minimalist cardboard box containing 100 individually wrapped pieces in light white waxed paper. I highly appreciate the absence of glue spots, as well as the laser engraving of the manufacturing date on each individual blade. This detail, coupled with the ink-stamped packaging date on the inside of the box lid, underscores the manufacturer's commitment to traceability and robust quality management implementation.
High-grade stainless steel is the material from which this blade is forged a somewhat generic designation provided by the manufacturer. Absent the means to conduct an X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopic analysis, it is impossible for me to definitively determine the exact grade of stainless steel. Each blade undergoes an electronically controlled sharpening and honing process. Regarding the platinum coating, AccuTec relies on a novel, proprietary technology dubbed "Platinum Diamond Glide."
Marketing jargon aside, the crux of the matter lies in its practical application and performance. Initially, it gave the impression of a sharp blade, yet when it encountered areas of "dense forest", the clearing process became somewhat sluggish. My stubble density and coarseness are above average, paired with rather sensitive skin - a "glorious" combination. For my specific needs, the blade performed optimally on a single day's growth, striking a fine balance between sharpness, smoothness, and a gliding sensation. The perceived sharpness and aggressiveness align with that of a mild blade; the platinum plating yields this inherent gentleness. Conversely, on a two-day growth, the blade loses efficiency during the first pass (WTG). I appreciate that the platinum coating is uniform and smooth, delivering a tug-free shave. Essentially, the charm of this blade resides in the manufacturer's plating execution.
In terms of perceived sharpness and aggressiveness, the Personna GEM PDG ranks significantly below blades such as Feather, Kai, Gillette Nacet, or Personna Med Prep. Instead, they closely mirror the performance of Personna Comfort Coated / Lab Blue and Gillette Astra Superior Platinum (Green), without surpassing them. The blade truly shines through its balanced nature, compensating by offering a smoother, gentler glide across the face. Another major selling point is its longevity, successfully retaining its properties even after four shaving sessions.
I highly recommend testing this blade to anyone who favours Personna Comfort Coated / Lab Blue, Gillette Astra Superior Platinum (Green), or similar alternatives - regardless of their country of manufacture (Russia, India, China) - as well as to those looking to tone down a more aggressive razor, or shaving enthusiasts who simply enjoy experimenting to broaden their expertise.
