looking over razors on eBay, you know, cause I'm minimising.. and I see this, correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't the name "old type" given to what was at the time essentially just called the Gillette Safety Razor at the time by collectors later on?

I've had a few old types but I'm not totally up on them so I may be wrong, just didn't seem right.
 
Thought that too. Maybe produced just after the new was released so rebranded to reflex differing product lines.
As the old was still being produced after the new was put to market.
 
Yep, what @RustyBlade said pretty much.

As the New Improved was introduced it took the premium price point and the 'original' style Gillettes took the discounted price as the Old Type.
