WEEKLY SHAVING SOAP REVIEW

Nice review @Bladerunner7. (y) I've tried a few ZM samples, and been very impressed. This one sparks my curiosity with the combination of rose and oud, which is a favourite of mine with Noble Otter's Two Kings (now discontinued, though tubs are still available here and there). I might even be tempted to forgive the inclusion of patchouli...

OFFICINA ARTIGIANA - OLI DEL BENESSERE (ITALY)

ODB-Jar.jpg

First Look - When I received my first Officina Artigiana Oli De Benessere or ODB, It felt like I was holding a glass jar of expensive facial Moisturiser for men, it reminded me a bit of Razorock’s Dead Sea and Santa Maria Del Fiore Firenze as well. Unlike the Razorock jars, this one looked classier and felt a larger somehow. The cover art is anything but eye catching with a minimalist design featuring the brand name and logo, shaving soap title and the country of manufacture. It could even pass off as a jar of homemade butter or some exotic Italian delicacy packed in it. Having said that, the whole jar and the box it comes in do look classy and at first glance you know this is a premium product.

Side note – I was familiar with Cella Milano, Omega, Proraso, Saponificio Varesino, Extro, and Abbate y La Mantia and Razorock but truthfully I had never heard of OA or Officina Artigiana. So, when my buddy Lee from Charmwise Malaysia recommended the soap a few months back, I thought it would be another Italian shaving product cast in the same mould as the above mentioned brands. To be fair, while it is, Officina Artigiana could well be Italy’s best kept secret, a brand known for their line of shaving soaps, aftershaves, eau de parfum, wellness oils, ventilated clay, Dead Sea salts, menthol crystals and their top selling B15 hyaluronic acid gel.

First Lather – Oli De Benessere translates to ‘Wellness Oils’ in English and it includes five of them, Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Almond Oil, Grapeseed Oil and Castor Oil. The mixture is said to be heat-treated 5 times and with 5 different stages of mixing the ingredients. Each vegetable fat is then processed with different times, phases and quantities through a complex manual procedure to ensure that the oils nourish the skin during and many hours after the shave. All claims aside, I proceeded to scoop out a teaspoon from the mix which appeared to look like grainy wet sand. Hang on, I had seen this kind of croap texture before… in Extro Cosmesi which my Dear friend Errol had sent me. I worked my Razorock Big Bruce brush in the Oaken lab ceramic bowl and figured that this soap is super thirsty. I went through four cycles of adding 12 drops of water while bowl lathering for 30 seconds each time and I was rewarded with a thick, really dense and luxurious lather.

ODB-Bowl.jpg
ODB-Brush.jpg

First Performance – The lather had me convinced but what about the actual shave performance? Every stroke of the brush on my face felt like I was providing my cheeks with skin food to pamper my face. I stopped a few times to inhale that fragrance, it was just addictive. First pass done and I could feel the slickness, not a lot of it but just enough. The cushion and protection on the other hand was so good that even my Ikon Tek with a Nacet blade felt smooth and less aggressive than normal. Two passes done and that’s when I believed the claim of 5 wellness oils each possessing a unique function of toning, moisturizing and revitalizing the skin. I’m going to skip the function of each oil to save this review from turning into an epic but my face felt amazing post shave and there was no need of an after shave balm or a splash, just cold water was good enough.

First Opinion – While this glass jar may lack the funky, new wave or psychedelic appearance of other shaving soap covers, Oli Del Benessere isn’t targeted at the young and carefree or casual audience. It is aimed at the sharp dressed male who values the way he looks and smells, the kind of sincere male that commands respect when he walks into a room. If you love Leather, it doesn’t get better than this. Scent qualities aside, this vegan soap not only matched it’s tallow cousins in performance but went a step ahead with its skin benefiting properties. My skin felt amazing and nourished till the next day. Officina Artigiana has four different soaps in its line up but for me ODB is the number one.

MASTER SOAP CREATIONS / TRC - LIGHT BLUE (SOUTH AFRICA)

TRC-MSC-Light-Blue.jpg

First Look
- Following a few weeks of lathering up with woody, leather and intense masculine fragrances, it was time to ease up and opt for a lighter product that’s gentler on the nose and with my favorite colour in the title, I was sure this would be special. Enter Light Blue, a limited edition collaboration between The Razor Company (USA) and Master Soap Creations (South Africa). At first glance, the cover art seemed a bit off to me, abstract and shrouded in blue but a closer look revealed that there was more to the picture than meets the eye. A bespectacled man’s right eye and part of his face adorned the cover and keeping in mind the fact that this was a tribute to Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Pour Homme, for a fleeting moment I wondered whether it was one of the two owners of D&G on the cover. That aside, this cover art held my attention and it did remind me of a Garth Brooks Album cover called. ‘Fresh Horses’ which had the singer’s face reflected in his eye. I’m a mega GB fan and had to throw that in there.

Side note – Fernando Saraiva is the Artisan behind Master Soap creations and his brand though known by few wet shavers before, achieved a hugely popular status due to his collaboration with Yaqi of China. I have quite a collection of Yaqi Soaps and love them all, those soaps were my gateway to MSC and then the collaboration with The Razor Company.

First Whiff – Drawing inspiration from D&G Light Blue Pour Homme, the scent profile is described as a complex opening with Bergamot, sun-drenched Sicilian mandarin, frozen grapefruit peel and aromatic juniper sitting atop a heart of Sichuan pepper and rosewood with American muskwood, incense and oakmoss as the bed. This blend of fragrances is aimed at capturing the energy of the beautiful and sunny Mediterranean sea. On first whiff, I get a strong note of pleasant grapefruit peel and light citrus which can be attributed to the Sicilian mandarin. I did not get any Sichuan pepper but maybe a trace of rosewood. The oakmoss and American muskwood are there but overall I get a grassy, citrusy and aquatic blend on the nose. That goal of capturing the energy of the beautiful and sunny Mediterranean sea, Oh Yeah ! TRC & MSC certainly hit the nail on the head with this one. D&G Light Blue is one of the rare cases where I actually prefer the light version over the EDP or the Intense offering and this soap is an exact dupe.

First Lather – MSC soaps whether vegan or tallow always produce a nice thick lather. Light Blue is supposed to be a few steps ahead with the New Colab Base that includes Stearic Acid, Aqua, Tallow, Castor Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Fragrance/Essential Oils, Sodium Hydroxide, Cocoa butter, Bentonite Clay, Kaolin Clay, Avocado Oil, Glycerine, Sodium lactate, Xantham Gum, Dpanthenol Baobab Root, Marshmallow root and Thussah Silk. Scooping out a bit of the soap which had a very soft texture, I proceeded to lather with just a little water. I worked my Boti Synthetic G5 Brush in my Timeless TR Bowl for 40 seconds before adding a bit more water for two cycles. This isn’t a thirsty soap at all and it is very easy to build a thick and creamy lather which displays a lovely sheen to it. I was really impressed with the consistency and the look of the lather.

Light-Blue-Bowl.jpg
Light-Blue-Brush.jpg

First Performance – MSC Soaps have always been very reliable performers for me and Light Blue marched a few steps ahead of its older relatives. That New Colab Base is top shelf with the cushion, protection and slickness being second to none. My first pass was so good that I wanted to do two more but the lack of stubble prevented me from doing so. I was so enjoying the lather on my face that I took my time with lathering up for both passes. Post shave, as I ran my finger tips on my cheeks I could feel my skin feeling refreshed and smooth as silk and how can I forget that fragrance, this is a feel good scent that lingers for a while on the face after the shave.

First Opinion – I have enjoyed every single MSC shaving soap or after shave splash in the past due to the fact that they leave the skin feeling amazing while making every shave during and post a sheer joy. The Razor Company and MSC have scored a winner with Light Blue and while many brands swing between 4 oz and 5 oz with their pour, MSC goes the whole hog with 170 grams or 6 oz at an affordable price point. This is a soap meant for the summer months or when you just want a shave that is UBER COOL.

Nice work, this soap definitely appeals... Hmmm.

@LesC just get the Yaqi Soaps off Aliexpress, they are fantastic, specially the ones containing Tallow - Miyaqi, Frankenscent, Psychedelic, Bettie Bets and Velvet Rose. Velvet Rose is one of my top favs. I would even suggest you get the samples, they are big compared to what the other brands offer. Every Yaqi Soap and splash is made by by MSC.

Or you could get MSC from The Razor Company, Their shipping is very reasonable for me.

Cheers for that, I have 3 MSC “Yaqi” soaps (Oud to die for) and their splashes. Thanks for the 👍 up for Razor Co and your great reviews!!

This soap has been on my mind and on my wet shaving shopping list for a long time, I just couldn't pull the plug to buying this into my den.

Shut up! @Bladerunner7 don't even try and encouraged me buying, it won't bloody work.

That quality Glass Jar can also be used to fill in more soap at a later date 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I would say get the Soap and the matching non alcohol splash, that fragrance will linger through the day.

Get the Splash containing alcohol to go with it and it will stay on for upto 12 hours.
