Pics of current razor

These are photos of the razor I have been using with the Bic Blades. Like I said it is like a mini Slim without the settings.P1010759.jpgP1010760.jpgP1010761.jpg

Will select a new combo for the Sunday shave

Finally got around to trying a Derby that I pilfered out of the traveling box some weeks ago. Maybe I was asking a bit much of it to follow a Schick but even so, I didn't think much of it. Not particularly smooth or sharp.. Well at least I got it at the right price :cheesy:

I think that is the very definition of setting something up to fail...poor ole Derby!

P.160 Tipo Duro
Vie Long Horse/Badger
Merkur 34C
Gillette "The Spoiler"
Alum
MARCO! & Stella ASB

First go with the famed Spoiler. That puppy is sharp! A bit rusty on the Tipo duro and probably not my most excellent lather resulting in a couple of little weepers on the neck. A bit of cold water and the alum worked a treat.

The spoiler has all the hallmarks of a top shelf blade. Let's see how it holds up over the next few outings.

.........The spoiler has all the hallmarks of a top shelf blade. Let's see how it holds up over the next few outings.

The only problem with these top shelf blades is that other blades don't get a look in. I've managed to resist loading up yet another vintage blade and have gone for a Perma Sharp. After two shaves in I can say that it's a very nice blade. In the same breath I have to say that I haven't shaved with a contemporary blade for ages so it might well be yet another MUM blade but I'm not going to conclusively say that for fear of garnering the wrath of SYD who, by the way, should not be called small yet deadly but much more like big and deadly (BAD) or tall and deadly (TAD). As a fellow member of the brotherhood/cult/fanbois club of ARKO!, of course I used ARKO!

I had a sniff of Arko from the Travelling box. It didn't seem as bad as I was led to believe it would be, but with all the other nice aromas out there it would have to give a bloody good shave for me to even contemplate it.

See the Euro Palmolive for another example. I had one shave with it, and it was ok, but has since been consigned to the spare toiletries bag for emergency usage only when I accidentally run out of everything else (which at current usage rates would be approximately 2020).

I worry that my PSS love will have had a little shine taken off it PJ...but then I think of the price differential and start to smile again.

Gut2,2 Eggy. Good call. I best pull that back up for a go again.

Today was a good shave.

PSS blade on its third.
Merkur Progress at 4.
Arko! stick
Semogue LE 2011 Badger
Finished nicely with TOBS Jermyn AS.

The wife rang me on the way to work to tell me that "whatever AS you used this morning has filled the house with a beautiful scent".

I said that's TOBS, baby.

MWF
Semogue 830
Merrrrrkuuuur 34C
Spoiler (2)
Alum
LOreal ASB

Jury's still out on the spoiler. It is super sharp but not the smoothest at this point. I reckon it's sharper than the vintage schick but gives away some ground in smoothness. The spoiler is giving me a revision course in angle and pressure though so I guess it's not all bad!

First MWF shave in a long time. Awesome soap - great lather and my skin feels great.

Fixed that one.

No, she never commented on the Arko! so that would be an odd thing to reply to her.

I did ask her if Arko! smells like urinal cakes.

She said she had to go check on the taps in the other room.....

Schick Krona w/ Bolzano Superinox
Proraso (green soap)
Omega 45
TOBS Eton College A/S

Really nice shave! I'm undecided on the Bolzano, it's a little rough on the face and not as sharp as I like, but I've had two really excellent shaves from it. It just doesn't give me the enjoyment that I get from other blades. Much more relaxed in the mild Krona than the aggressive iKon SB I tried it in first. First run with the TOBS Eton College splash too. Nice burn on the face to begin with, it left my skin feeling soft and clean. It has a nice citrus and light floral scent, maybe a little sweet for my taste but still very pleasant.

Merkur Progress
Shark at 3
Arko! Stick
Semogue Badger
TOBS Jermyn St AS

The Shark had its teeth out on this occasion. I was careful and went slow and I felt that if I rushed, this would bite me. I had the usual result from the soap and the brush.
I have taken the liberty to put a new Shark into the Muhle R41 for comparison and tomorrow will try that combo out and see which is the better shave.

With this blade, my money is on the R41 being the better razor for it.

Ingrams Menthol
Frankshave Silbertip
Merkur 34C
Schpoiler (3)
Alum
L'Oreal

Generated oodles of rich, creamy (effing freezing) lather with a brush with zero backbone. Lather for three men indeed!

Spoiler is still really sharp but feeling less inclined to bite. I think this is like the ultra-astra SP or maybe it's going to turn out like a feather that lasts for a bunch of shaves instead of crapping out after 3.

Muhle R41
Shark blade
Arko! Adventure Cream
Semogue Badger
TOBS Jermyn St AS

Shark blades work well in the R41 razor. I think it's down to the user - with the R41 being so aggressive you are careful not to throw it around your face like I do with the Progress I used yesterday. So with this razor I tend to gingerly find the right angle to hold it and once I find the sweet spot, the shave is a real pleasure.
No nicks or cuts, a smooth close shave for two passes WTG and XTG.

The Arko! Adventure cream is good stuff too. It lathers well and is just as good as anything else I have squeezed out of a tube...except Proraso Green. I love that green beautiful bastard and I wish I had more of the original recipe stuff.

Is it one of those nasty 2011 R41s? They sound mean!

Fatboy on #5 w/ Bolzano Superinox
Blobby Foo
Arko
Alum/Nivea Sensitive Balm

I felt like I had neglected the Blobby Foo since I got my Duke, so tonight I unleashed it on the Arko tub. If I ever need to shave in a real hurry, this'll be the combo that I use. I'm learning to face lather at the moment and the Blobby is a beast that makes it easy. The Arko tub makes a nice lather too, really stable on the face. I think I'll put the tub outside for a few days though, the industrial lemon has defeated me this time. The Fatboy/Bolzano combo gave a good but unremarkable shave. I want to like these Bolzano Superinox blades and I can't fault the result, I just don't think they're sharp enough for me.

I'm having real success with a simple post-shave routine. Alum and Nivea balm. I've worked out that alcohol just doesn't work for me in an aftershave, which is a really bummer as it limits my choices greatly. I love the sting of the alum and the way it leaves my face feeling clean, and the Nivea (although a little greasy) is moisturising and soothes any irritation. Really great stuff and it's nice to have it available locally, but apparently Nivea may be discontinuing the Sensitive line in Europe/America. It would be a great shame if that happens here too, and anyone who likes it might want to keep an eye out for that or stock up. If it goes on clearance, it might not come back.

Yeah, I'm an alum-Nivea user myself. Would be a shame if it is discontinued but something else will take it's place.

I've got a tube of green you can have Jug. I'm not a great fan myself and only bought it because I could but I think they've now stopped stocking it in the "Little Italy" IGA in Stirling. Anyhow, let me know if you want it. You gave me a stick of La Toja a while back and I'm just about to crack that one open. What goes around comes around!
