Shave of the day 2013

My ONLY complaint about the Black Beauty is that it's rather light, particularly the handle. If the handle could be made heavier, it'd be a excellent razor.

That's the only thing I found I didn't like with the Edwin Jagger DE86. Lovely razor but slightly light in the handle.

It may be because I'm used to the heft of my Mergress XL, but yeah, I'm also on the lookout for a reasonably priced v.good condition Slim.
That should round out the collection to keep me happy - BB, Tech, Slim and Mergress XL....maybe sell the Mergress for a Muhle R89 (rosegold).

Today I had my first shave with the iKon SB, which is the safety bar version. Most people regard it as being slightly more aggressive than the Merkur 34C. I used it with a Personna Lab, and it was plenty sharp enough. Definitely more aggressive than a 34C, and with less tolerance for variation in blade angle. The weight of the razor really does help in keeping the pressure off, but so does the pain when you press down too hard. This is an extremely smooth cutting combo, but I think I'll stick to some of the less sharp blades for a little while. A sharp blade with poor technique or prep could lead to disaster. I also tried the Arko! in the tub for the first time. Although the industrial lemon scent was strong but not overly bothersome, I think I'll leave it open in the bathroom for a while anyway. It doesn't add much to the shave in my opinion. The soap loaded pretty easily with the Omega #45 and lathered up nicely on my face. I'm just getting to grips with face-lathering so my first pass was a touch dry, but came good for the second. The Arko! performed much as expected, good cushion and stability. Lather held together really well and didn't dry on my face. Average for moisturising and slickness/glide. I think it's worth the $4.50 it costs, and the tub is decent and will be re-used. It's apparently a different formulation to the stick, which I've never tried. For what it's worth, it compares pretty similarly to the cream.

Omega #45 continues to perform well. The softness when compared to the unbleached/undyed boar is pretty noticeable, but so far I haven't had much problem loading any soaps I have. Even if I decide down the track that it's too soft, it'll be a great candidate for a TGN re-knot as I really like the handle.

P.160 Morbido
Semogue 830
Slimbo (6,6)
Gillette "Super Silver" (??) from the travelling blades PiF (which one is this)
Alum
ASB

Just a quick 2 passer for work. Blade seemed pretty good without concentrating on it much. Sharp and smooth, I don't think this one was the spoiler so what was it?

Old timers disease kicking in PJ?......

Now, now SYD. I think it might have been amongst a bunch of odds and ends that Mark sent me in response to my request for potential "worst blades". They certainly didn't qualify for that. Also in amongst that lot were some vintage Gillette SS (basically spoilers, which I also added to the vintage blade PIF) and others I haven't tried yet.

...........Getting an itch to add a new brush to the lineup.

Got any idea which one?

SYD, used for mainly cream or soap?
For cream I still haven't found a better value for money brush than the Frank Shaving 'Finest' badger.
For soaps, any old boar will do :)

Cheers for the input Spyne.

I already have a frankshave in the stable so looking for something else I think. Boar, undyed, 55mm and 22-24mm knot I think. Good handle a must

STOP THE PRESSES!!!!

Gang I've just been over to YKW to see what's what in the brush world and have become aware of something...lifechanging!

We could all be experiencing, unknowingly, a phenomenon known as brushburn

I thought my beard was heavy and my skin was sensitive but these guys have got it bad. Persistant skin irritation brought about by shave brushes of insufficient softness and luxury (whilst still maintaining adequate backbone - they are gentlemen you must remember, not feeble womenfolk)

If you are experiencing any kind of inexplicable irritation (or cancer) you can surely lay the blame at the doorstep of this insidious foe, brushburn

These people are so brain-addled that they're mistakenly shaving with a scourer.

I like my two Omega's, SYD. You could do much worse than the 10005 that Drubbing and Nick have, it's about the right dimensions.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA..... Classic!

This made my night!

Of course brushburn is far more prevalent with Simpson brushes and unknown with Rudy Vey brushes ......

Brush wars are back!

Just sayin!

This is why the word "f@#ktard" will never die. How else can you describe these people?

Anybody got any links? Would like to read up on brushburn without having to wade through the oceans of sycophantic drivel.

No, not I.

You do realise that I made my comment up I presume?

It doesn't even seem to be a new branch of stupidity. This search returns 275 results!

Let me google that for you

Lord love a bloody duck - these people are totally insane. If I was a member over there (and I will never be cause I would only last about one post) I would ask whether they had considered that their water was a little too acidic for the particular bristles of their brush. Scientific tests have shown that they need a brush whose bristles have a specific PH level (make up a number) and if this is incorrect coupled with acidic water you can get what they call brush burn but is really a chemical reaction between the water and their bristles. I suspect some of those intellectual geniuses over there would go for it as they seem to have a propensity to leap on any bandwagon that happens to be passing.

AHHHHH!

That is an incredible insight Master Glen.

Is a specific brush and water pH part of the expanded Thomas Method 'system' now?

You are clearly onto something...
