Shave of the day 2013

Well i had another go last night. Same razor and blade but tried the lavender shaving cream. Still having a bit of trouble with the lather. Tried to lather in the hand, then bowl. The cream seems to be more soap than cream. I'll try one of JugV2's creams next time. Gave myself a nick on the chin, got a little cocky and went to fast.

heh couldn't resist it...

But good work mate, you are on the way!

My shave today:

R41
Shark on its 5th shave...man I really need to change this blade. It's definitely past its sweet spot. Still, I managed to get a reasonable shave.
Semogue Badger
Triumph and Disaster shave cream
Floid AS to finish

Not the worst combo, but not the best either. Adequate for a wet cold morning in Perth though.

Why don't you lather straight on your face? Not only is stubble the perfect substrate for making lather on, at the same time you're softening your skin and stubble through working the brush in to it. It's win-win.

Bowls just mean more cleaning up, are a throw back to some obscure 1940's style gangster movie scenes (arrogant, cruel mobster boss covered in lather lying back in the barbers chair, barber absentmindedly stropping a cut throat and in bursts a rival gang firing machine guns) and are an impedement rather than an aid for making proper lather. I can't remember how many "look at this bowl full of amazing lather" pictures I've seen with stuff I wouldn't even use to clean the sink. I guess I should say in my opinion or words to that affect but that's up there with smileys and using the word gentleman.

Nothing like a decent rant occasionally.

Good job Dreddy. Not sure what brush you have so I'll stay out of the face v bowl lathering.

At the risk of looking uber geeky I recommend picking up a tube of fauldings shave bream or the palmolive and doing some practice lathers where you aren't worried about actually shaving with the result. This way you can keep adding water and see the whole spectrum though to when it gets too wet and collapses. Coming from canned goo I'm 99% sure you will be adding an inadequate amount water to the lather atm.

Another plastic/bakelite winner

Had a shave with an unknown two piece bakelite (actually think it's a more modern plastic) razor that Mark sent me. It was by catch from one of his many e-bay deals. Unusual construction in anything other than metal. The only other two piece one I've seen in plastic/bakelite is a Darwin. Anyhow loaded it up with a PSS blade and it's a great razor. A very mild open comb which gave me a superb result. Thanks Mark! Got two of these and with my other two bakelites I've now stopped scouring e-bay for any more.

I bought this brush Men-u Pure Bristle Barbiere Shave Brush and Stand: White and have been using these creams D.R. Harris Shaving Cream Sampler Pack Can you 'soften' the cream? I swirled it arounds heaps and put it right into the brush, but i still had a lump of it that wouldn't breakdown.
JugV2 sent me som 'Taylor of old bond Street' creams which i will try.

So you don't want the other one I picked up recently? :D

Seriously, glad that you liked it

Sounds like you are being a bit too reserved with your action Dredd.

It's a mens brush not a makeup brush give it a bit more elbow grease, don't spare the horses and some extra cliches...

Watch this bloke lathering up some Musgo cream. See how he is really pushing the brush quite firmly onto his face. Don't be scared to work the brush :)

How is the handle on that thing BTW!

I said I had stopped looking. Doesn't mean you should stop too! What is it?

I have no idea what it is! Just some random bakelite thing :)

You sabotaging the bloke Juggy?

You haven't read some nonsense over at YKW about storing your shave cream in the freezer to preserve it and enhance the shave have you Dreddy?

I had the sample pots sitting on my shelf for a few months but they should be good - I think one might have been a soap to be honest.

Maybe Dredd is mistaking a soap for a cream?

Lynchy is right about the stuff you having being better quality, no doubt.

But what was meant by the "supermarket cream" remark was that for $4 or so you can get a cheap tube of cream to waste and not have to care about it, in order to get your lathering technique right.

I sat down and went through the creams. Out of the five dr Harris samples, the two I've tried are quite hard/dry. I just opened the other three and they are very creamy and what I was expecting. I suspect the first two may have dried up and I managed to pick them first :) This is an example of the luck that I can attract. I'm now looking forward to the next shave, third times the charm ;)

I switched a 5 shave spoiler out of the EJ89, and into my "new to me" old razor tonight.

I wasn't expecting a great shave, but the spoiler amazed me again. 6 shaves in, and showing no signs of going off yet.

I am going to have to revisit the schicks after this one dies, as I really don't remember them being as good, but the rest of you seem to.

Email the guys at men's biz. They are really good at customer service and will probably look after you.
