I'd like to get into Jnats, but they're hugely expensive.

They don't have to be. I bought a Nakayama suits for around NZD120/AUD 100 with free shipping from Japan recently. It's not huge (around 140x40mm), but it can take a razor from bevel set to a lovely edge. It's pictured in the What did you hone today thread if you want a gander.
