Great lather, just as good as the green Proraso.

It was a good shave, nothing bad, heaps of lather and slick cushioning goodness, the brush is great and the blade is on its fifth shave. I am starting to feel the tug and I think it's time to move on to a new blade.
 
I had a really rough cold water shave using nannys silly soap (croap) and a voskhod of undetermined age (but I think less than 3 shaves) on Monday.

So yesterday I swapped for an Astra, and Proraso, but kept the water (as) cold (as Darwin water gets in November) shower / no mirror shave, and had wonderful results.

I think I am blaming my lack of technique in getting decent lather out of the croap and think I might well pif/trade it on if anyone thinks they could get more out of it than me?

All right, all right. You have to admit that the number of permutations of the words platinum and plus is somewhat limited which hence leads to confusion. There must be over a hundred blades currently in production (let alone out of production), many of which have the words platinum or plus or super or all three of them in their names. You need a post graduate degree in DE blade history to fully come to terms with the terminology.

I'm with you mate - blades are too confusing for the likes of me. I'll stick with my razors!

Egg,

IMHO give it another few tries before binning it. Try different brushes, loading with a wetter brush/drier brush - more water on your face etc. You prolly know how fickle certain products can be and also that lathers can look terrible but then with 30sec more work they EXPLODE into a great lather from nowhere.

Not unusual for a soap to seem impossible to use but actually end up giving great results with a lil practice e.g MWF.

Shame to PIF something that could just need a lil more practice. But thats just my 2 cents worth.

Well I can confidently say the Vietnamese Gillette SuperThin is BY FAR the worst blade I've ever had the misfortune to try. My god it was HORRIBLE! And thats an understatement.....I tried around 5 strokes in the 37c before thinking ok - maybe it's just being shown up in this (as the 37c is demanding on blades) so tried in the Slim@5 - almost as bad! Tried at 3 - just as horrible!

Pulled it out and binned it immediately! Oh man......now I know some folks have different opinions on blades but I would never understand how these could be used once one knows blades like PermaSharps, Polsilvers etc exist.

Put in a Rapira Platinum Lux blade......pretty so-so, slightly above average but definitely nothing spesh....that said I was still wincing from where the SuperThin had 'torn' hairs out - so I'll have to try properly next time around.
 
Flick one through to me! Still haven't found a really bad blade yet. This could be it!

Had a go with the Sir Irish Moos. Liked the scent. Sort of perfumy. Very distinct. Lather, as you would expect, is very much the quality of Tabac. Good stuff.

Oh and a GEM on No 3 in the Bullet tip. Kick arse!

Even scored a wolf whistle from a car load of ladies at the shops. Even just knowing PJ can boost your appeal to the other sex!
 
2nd shave with the Rapira Platinum Lux and it's a VERY nice blade.....is very smooth, I'd say almost as much so as any blade I've used. Very easy to shave with. I've only used in the Slim but impressive indeed.

I'll be upfront and say I do NOT feel it's on the same level as the elite blades BUT it's definitely on the next tier down from these as it's a very enjoyable blade to use.

Used yesterday with MNS Bay Rum (first time I've used the new stuff and not the sample) - very nice shave.....as always after using MNS stuff you just feel 'done' by rinsing your face off - it's kind of bizarre and using other soaps is very different as I'll feel dry/'raw' until I go with some toner/moisturiser. Lovely scent too.
 
Had a shave with this blade that Mark sent me. It's a Gillette Super Silver (sorry about the picture quality). Insanely sharp. Reminds me of early Feather expereinces. Face rape on the first shave. I'll try it again to see how it goes but not really looking forward to it. It's not in production as far as I know. Anybody else ever tried one of these? Will happily flick it on if you want to try it. There's a few left in the dispenser.

Great blades. Possibly sharper yet not as smooth as the Gillette Platinum Plus.

They will get your technique sorted for you PJ.... :laugh:

Smooth? If you mean skinned alive sort of smooth. If this is one of the elite, out of production, nirvana blades, I'm not sure I want to go there too often.

Haven't posted in here for a while.

Nothing exciting to report- mainly sticking with a 1940s style SS and re-trying various blades now I have a bit more experience/technique under my belt.

Some observations:

-The Shark blades fail to impress. Despite a great Arko lather and doing everything else right, I just get too much tugging with these.
-Derby blades are much better than the Sharks, but even with them I still have a very small amount of tugging
-Rapiras continue to impress for me these are the pick of the ultra cheap blades so far. VERY close to Astra performance at an insane price
-Astra blades are always a safe bet for me. No matter what razor I use I always get a good shave.
-Feathers: I'm officially a fan.

FWIW I concur across the board on these thoughts. Been a long time since I used a Feather (though have a few to use), Astras are a safe benchmark blade - gernally give a 'good' shave in any razor not anywhere as good as some of the elite blades but you can see why they're a safe bet for many users. The SHarks are definitely for the missus or 'friends'.
