Shave of the day

Gave the ol Astra's a bash on the weekend. A bit too sharp for me for everyday now, although usuable.
Cella
Omega's cheapest most plastickyiest boar.

Nothing to complain about. Cracking boar for a fiver.

Workday
Gill Yellow
Cella
Same boar
Better with a bit less fuss.

I can see where Pj is coming from, occasionally I get a bit of a fluffy lather with Cella and it might be less protective. But I put it down to user error - it happens with other soaps too, but not often.
Yeah I would say it's user error myself, it happens, and as I said before, I compare it to MWF in that regard.

Found an opened GBE blade today, unused, guess I had it out ready a while ago and forgot about it.
Decided to put it my never used HD rocket. Used cella and the simmo brush.
First pass good, the lather gave out for the second pass half way though, so I quit while I was ahead and went unmangled to fight another day.
It was just a rushed poor lather, just not enough soap picked up in that round by the simmo IMO.

Nope no way never again.
Soap the same
Brush the same
Two passes with the Slim and Feather.
Blood - there was blood yuck oocky stuff.
Doesn't happen using the TM so back I go.
And the Slim was only set to 5.

I will stick to what works best for me in future.

Yeah, stick with the SE.

  • FATBOY! on 6
  • Fresh Bolzano DE Blade, second shave
  • Proraso Cream
  • Smoggie 730HD + Muhle Bowl

I always seem to nick myself on Proraso. A couple of light stings as I washed off. Quality shave though.
Yeah, it's not the greatest shave soap, just a novelty with it's menthol in my opinion.

Tonight i decided to use up the last of the (tiny) samples supplied with the Edwin Jagger razor on only the 2nd shave using them.
Woeful lather, and awful sandalwood aftershave balm. I will definitely not be ordering either of these again.

I've only used the TOBS sandalwood cream once, but if it smells anything like this I will be looking to move it on sharpish, and the Nanny's unopened hard soap will follow it soon after.

Excuse me while I go and wipe this balm off and replace it with something nicer, like bleach.

Today I used the R41 razor - which I incorrectly called an R34 or something previously.

Bleue blade 2nd shave
Semogue LE 41 badger
TOBS Jermyn soap

It was a better shave than the first time I used this blade and razor combo, but I still felt face-raped afterwards. It feels like the first time I used a Feather blade...just harsh.

I will try a milder blade tomorrow. I'm thinking the Voskhod, which I know and revere as a mild yet effective blade.

If anyone has any other blade suggestions, let me know.

Has anyone else used the R41 successfully? Am I just being sensitive?

Mine turned up today, might have to give them a try tomorrow.

From the reviews over YKW it seems that it's a real love it or hate it razor.

I have a relatively light beard so I'm not all gaga over "super-aggressive" this and that. Plus I have a cupboard full of straights if I'm feeling adventurous :D

The R41 is mighty aggressive. Possibly the most aggressive non-adjustable modern DE handle out there. I know they take some getting used to, one person YKW loaded a Feather in one and the result was not pretty.

I am surprised that a Bleue would do that, even in a 41. They are smooth blades with lots of feedback. I think that maybe your angle is off?

As for other blades to try, I would go back to the old standby - Red IP / Personnal Platinum Chrome (they are the same blade, different packaging) which is about as user-friendly as blades get IMO. You could also try Derby in the R41 too, a milder blade paired with a more aggressive razor sometimes works.

I would be very interested to see how an R41 works with the White and Dark Gillette Platinums.

I borrowed a R41 from a B&B member for a couple of weeks.

First shave was scary with nicks everywhere.

Second shave was MUCH better as I got the angle closer to what is needed with no pressure - much closer to parallel to the skin than other razors I'd used.

Third shave - better again

Fourth - tenth shave - really close shave, probably the best I've every had BUT..... get it wrong for a moment and it is unforgiving, you WILL get nicked.

That was the problem for me, the risk factor.

Blade wise I think I threw a Feather in there - I often find that Feathers work well for me in more aggressive razors - YMMV of course.

After the horrible shave that was last night, I decided to have a go at TOBS sandalwood to see if it was anywhere near as bad as the Edwin Jagger cream/balm combination.
Blade change today, and i forgot the voskhods, so tried a Personna blue lab blade pif'd by Mark in the EJ DE89Bl.

Copious amounts of good lather, much nicer smell, another blade i like off the bat.
The Speick was a little stingy at the end, but not enough to spoil a really good shave.

I will try all the pif'd blades before I make my mind up, but if the rest of the Personna shaves feel as good as todays they will be on my list to buy soon.

I've half a tub of GFT Sandalwood I can swap ya...? It's more subtle than the TOBS IIRC.

I've come full circle on the Personnas. I used to find them really smooth, but a bit blunt and draggy. Either my technique has tightened up or my face is rebelling against sharper blades, cos I'm more inclined to use these and the Voks a lot more.

Revisited the TOBS today, and it was a dream in comparison to the other stuff. I think the lather was better than any other cream or soap I have tried so far (acknowledging that user error is likely in many cases).

I'm not ready to let go of it yet, but I am wondering if sandalwood isn't a hot/humid climate smell.

Cella Chapter 5

The title is a bit of a lie as I didn't use Cella this time. In short I think Cella is a good soap but doesn't provide enough protection when I'm using a DE open comb. Not that it resulted in nicks or razor burn or anything nasty like that. I just felt uncomfortable hacking in to hard to get areas on a third pass. I'm not buying in to the "user error" argument as it would mean I've had a user error moment every time I've used it. This in turn would mean I'd have to take listen to the complete Cella gibberish over at YKW regarding a soap that is stupidly easy to use. I think it's something in the composition that doesn't provide the same level of ease you get with Speick or Tabac or Valobra (scent notwithstanding). But that is hardly surprising.

Anyhow back to SOTD:

Travel brush with TGN best knot: This brush is getting better with every use. In my extended rotation I don't think it's had more than a dozen or so uses and it starting to show.

Triple soap: MWF, Speick and Tabac sticks left overs.

7O'Clock bakelite with Shark on No2

Great shave on a two day growth. Just trying to use up the DE blades I've got loaded in a few razors so I can get cracking with the Damaskeene SE which hopefully will arrive by the end of this week.

Clearly from your comments and lake of homage to 'The Master' you have been biased against Cella since the start.

This has obviously result in unconscious 'tightening in your technique every time you use it - basically you tense up in anticipation and get a bad shave. Similar challenges befall elite athletes from time to time.

I believe that hypnotism can can assist or maybe you should try shock treatment or if all else fails a frontal lobotomy.

As a result of your condition any comments you make on the efficacy of Cella can be completely discounted.

:D

Yes...I know....you're right. I live in a complete and paralysing fear of having to agree with the Guru and that I don't know how to use Cella. It's a bit like the last paragraph of "1984" where the poor bastard just gives up and agrees. I'm shaking with nervous tension every time I use it. That must be the reason. I'll auto-lobotomise (should be a word) and become a God fearing, polite, Cella sycophant instead.

Thanks you for your kind words and helpful suggestions. You're what Paste and Cut is all about.

I believe....I truly believe.

I wonder Mr Speykah, if the right honourable moderator Mr Speykah, has had a chance to revise his prior post Mr Speykah, from the prior Voskhod thread Mr Speykah, the one I have here Mr Speykah, AND I QUOTE!

Funnily enough, I tried one of these this morning too.

They're ok, such is the subjectivity of blades. I agree with most of your comments - very comfortable, forgiving blade. Not very sharp though. No work needed, like with Reds, just not a very efficient blade for me.

Decent enough, just no glitter and party streamers...
