Shave of the day

Yesterday's shave.....

Fatboy on 6
Fresh Permasharp
De-DrPeppered Cella, facelathered
Smoggie 730HD

Just one of those perfect shaves. The WTG pass was great, XTG hardly did anything.

I did hit my face with the Alum to check for any irritation. None whatsoever.

Washed off and went Nivea ASB.

Bliss.

R41
Gillette black Plat 7 O'Clock
Proraso cream (face lathered if you care)
Smoggie LE Boar
TOBS Eton Cologne

No cuts. It still felt a bit harsh, as if I had taken off some skin but not slicy, more scrapy.

Final verdict on the R41 is that it's just not for me. It's too harsh no matter what I do. The 7 O'clock Black is my go to blade, and it still felt nasty.

I will say this: you really have to be alert and careful when using the R41. It isn't very forgiving at all, and I don't want that kind of razor. I reserve the right to be a little sloppy or hasty if I wish. So back to its owner for the R41 next week.

Yep!!!!!!

This was my experience too. After 3 shaves I 'mastered' it but it was always there, waiting for that sloppiness to creep in - that it would make you pay the price.

Back to the future this pm.

Speick cream
Berk
HD - as always

Finished up with speick AS and balm. Perfect.

If this shave were put to music and film it would win an Academy Award™.

Fair enough.
I suffer from the opposite problem.

Feels like summer still, and if anything my skin is slightly greasy.

Should be nearly dry season yeah?

But with the rain you've been getting no wonder you feel slightly greasy.

Only been DE shaving for a month or so, I'm still working some stuff out for myself, I use a pre shave oil, oscars. I use a palmolive stick and hand rub it on and leave it while making some proraso lather in a bowl. I have been using an old gillette, but as of yesterday I am using a muhle r41 razor with a gillette blue pack blade.

Are you getting a decent lather using a stick and cream? Could be in danger of overloading. You're game, using an R41. If all the talk is credible it's apparently destroyed the faces of many a wet shaver.

I think I'm getting a decent lather?
For the first 2-3 weeks I tried to prep as per Kyle, shower
leave face wet - lather - hot towel - etc
I dont think this method was for me. My skin swells with moisture and when it has contracted an hour or so after shaving, there is stubble.

So I tried cold shaving. This means just using the cold tap at all times. No shower before shaving.
I put some oil on, let it stay on while I make and have a coffee.
Then, splash some water on face and swipe stick on the stubble and use my hand to rub/spread the soap over all my beard.
I then bowl lather the proraso, while occasionally wetting my hand and running it over my beard to keep the soap/face from drying, so the soap on my face may be mostly gone by the time my bowl lather is ready.

I find (for me) this cold method works much better for close and comfortable shaves.

I got the R41 as it appeared to be the most aggressive and different razor to what I have a #70 gillette. The R41 gives me the closest shave, but I do have to be more careful. It shaves quite easily, but the you can feel the "nasty" if you accidently bump it etc.

I didn't get on with any open combs, the old R41 was the worst. Stung like a bitch and didn't shave for shit.

I always thought the prep thing was overdone - one of those YKW rituals that never added anything, but time. As time goes on you might prefer to drop the oil and double soaping for the same reasons.

yep, the prep was taking way too long and had a worse result than not doing it for me anyway.
I will certainly be dropping as many steps and layers as I can. I'm just maintaining some consistency while trying other stuff.

Just read the Thomas Method TM. I might try that soon, using the R41 as the main, and touch ups with the gillette. Touch ups with the R41 are finicky in a couple of spots

To do the TM properly you really really need an SE for the first pass (and I just happen to know where you can get one free of charge).

By all accounts, if you can handle an R41, an SE is childs play. Come on..... convert! It's a religious holiday so nobody will hold it against you.

I did try I really did

As someone suggested, I tried a 2 pass shave with the Bullet tip - The bloody thing bit me on the 2nd pass.

Ungrateful wretched thing. In fact it was probably my fault, in fact I know it was.
Tried the second pass as I would doing the TM. casual scrape around areas the first pass hadn't quite got - lesson is don't be casual with an SE. You can get away with a lot more using a DE (even using a Feather blade) than you can with an SE. Anyway the other bits were

Blobby
Erasmic stick - first use so quite surprised lotsa lather but not too sure I like rubbing a hard stick of soap across the face.

Apart from the 5 to 6 litre blood loss (or the tiny nick) a good shave but I sahll return to the TM from henceforth. Seem to have it down to a fine art.

It seems you're a TM kind of guy.

Speick and Tabac are a lot softer. But I can understand the hard soap across the face thing

I shall return to the TM from henceforth. Seem to have it down to a fine art.

Seems you're a TM kind of guy. Whatever works!

My SOTD:

Vie Long horsey

Speick

Bullet tip with GEM on No 3

Superb all round.

With this I agree - must acquire some Speick or Tabac and give it a try. The Erasmic certainly gave a decent lather it was just the strange sensation of trying to apply it.

Coupla shaves:

Vie Long horsey: breaking in just nicely.

My MFW, Tabac, Speick triple leftover soap and then Tabac cream

Bullet tip with PTFE on Nos 4 and 5. Love these blades on their latter shaves. You can just throw it around, put a bit of pressure on and scrub away to your hearts content without any fear doing yourself damage.
