Tried the nylon Rubberset today.
It doesn't look right. Nylon is not made for shaving brushes but for toothbrushes IMHO. Imagine rubbing your face with your toothbrush - that is a little like shaving with this brush.
Despite that it whipped up an amazing lather with the Proraso soap, This brush would kill hard soaps and I'm wondering if maybe I can defer the new boar for a while and use this. I was really surprised by how well it worked. Easily enough lather for 2 1/2 passes.
On another note I got a reply from Mark at Simpson/Vulfix about them reknotting my vintage brush. Guide prices:
Pure £40.00 ($A62)
Best £50.00 ($A78)
Silvertip £65.00 ($A101)
Plus postage.
Looks like I will be saving up before I send it off :sad2:

The Omega lost about 10 hairs, but that shouldn't be a problem, it was the maiden run. Probably the same brush as my 10777, which is fine, as I mostly wanted a larger, more ergo handle and pretty much the same knot. Some places spec it as a wider knot, but I doubted that, and it seems to be the case.
Tried Glen's SS. Gillette's are still unlikely to win me over. A nice, mild razor that actually fkin shaves for the most part. Amazing. But it struggles on the neck and chin - the blade tends to glide over the lather instead of shaving. That's very like my Slim.
Also left with a little irritation. Nothing bad, but probably becasue I needed to go over spots far more than I do with the HD. I'll give it a run though and see if I get more efficient with it.
Las time I tried a SS it was a Red Tip and while it cut well, it wasn't that comfy to use.

Third day in a row I reached for the Nylon Rubberset, this is a worry...
Soap was C&E Nomad with a Voskhod blade past its prime in my Merkur 38C
The nylon eats up the hard soap to make a great lather. Still feels ordinary on the face, the badger feels a lot nicer, so why do I keep reaching for it?

Dear oh dear. So now you have to conclude that nylon makes a very good, if nasty looking brush. Maybe deep down you're an animal rights activist. Maybe as an avid collector of razors you are comimg to the dreadful conclusion that traditional shaving equipment is utilitarian rather than heirloom material. Maybe you should make the bold statement of putting a nylon knot in your old Simpson brush. Maybe photo shop a nylon knot in the brush and post it over at YKW to wind them up a bit. Lots of questions to answer there Mark.
By the way, now that there's a kink in your perception of what tradional shaving equipment should be made of, you should try and get hold of a few bakelite razors. The one I've got (7 O'Clock) knocks spots of any DE I've tried and if I want an easy, mindless shave it's the razor (DE or SE) I go for. I had exactly the same "why am I always grabbing this weird looking toy" reaction.

Back to SE after a few weeks dabbling in DEs.
Featherweight and then the CPMM for shaves one and two with a GEM blade. Arko for the first and then La Toja for the second. La Toja is in a different league compared to Arko. The latter turns to slop on the second pass. Usable but that's about it. I'll give it a couple more tries just in case I'm not using enough or something. The CP kicks butt. No need for any more than two passes to get a great shave.

Ahhh, badger softness. A gentle caressing of my face as I lathered with the sample of DR Harris Arlington I have. Nice enough cream but not my choice of scent.
Finished off with some Lucky Tiger.
Great shave, and nylon free!

Rushed one this morning.
4 Day growth, reached for the Smoggie 730HD, loaded with cella, face lathered, Fatboy on 6 with a 1-shave Malteser in it.
Not great, but face is smooth and no irritation. Pretty good for a rush job.

This forum's first straight shaver. I had a try but just couldn't do it. After many attempts I couldn't even complete one pass, so bailed.
After a brief flurry of activity this site has gone as dead as a dodo again but I'll keep posting even if it means I'm effectively talking to myself.

The Arko still sucks a bit but I'm assuming it might be some incompatibility with badger hair having tried it with two different ones. Doesn't seem to wanna let go so I'm squeezing the lather out and painting it on for subsequent passes. I'll give the stuff a try with a boar and a horsey and see what happens. Works all right once it's on your face. With a bit of luck I'll run out of the stuff before I reach a conclusion.

Well I haven't joined a showering forum, or teeth brushing forum, so discussing shaving everyday is just a bit weird for the same reason why I'd never seek out a showering, or a teeth brushing forum...
What SE did you get Jugs?
For what it's worth I shaved with a 1912 british ever ready today, not my best SE, (probably 4th best), but good enough and gets a little more life out of a blade than the MM CP or the LC.
MWF soap and smog SOC. I think hands down the MWF is my favourite soap, tabac a second fav, but depends if I'm in the mood for the scent. And the smog SOC works the best with both of them.
What SE did you get Jugs?

A tooth brushing forum, now there is an idea.
Manual v electric, all the variations on the different styles of brush, how you brush, tips on getting to those hard to reach places....
Of course that is only the hardware, you then have the whole software side - which paste to use, there could be product reviews, it is a whole new world!
Sub forums for denture wearers, flossing, mouthwash dos and donts - the possibilities are endless

A new blade - arrhhhh, makes a lot of difference, this time an Astra Superior Stainless, not as good as the Plats but still OK.
I reached for the...... Simpson 41 today.
Thought I'd give it another try this time with the Arlington cream.
Same outcome, it doesn't hold water well, not much body on the brush and altogether kinda meh.
Tooth & Pick? does that have a nice ring to it guys? What do you think?
