Shave of the day

You should. There's no such thing as too many blades.

Don't worry, $100 for 500 blades delivered is well worth it. I obviously need 2000 of them!

100 Silver Blues are ordered so should see them around the 13th-15th.

You only need to get 300 blades @ $60 to qualify for free postage from Bestshave, so at a blade a week you are looking at 6 years worth of blades.

I think they are so similar to Iridiums (minus they way they glide on your face) that they are the best value blade around right now.

warm water, mwf, omega boar, r41 7o'clock yellow, WH
fine shave
made plenty of nice lather, but still think the tabac is better. The mwf lather seems to dry quicker? never had drying lather with proraso, and I think tabac dries not as quickly.

razormonsta - is there a thread where you have reviewed all your blades? I found your review system but not actual reviews.

Peerless TGN finest
Triple soap (MWF, Speick, Tabac)
Fat handled NEW with Shark on a two day growth

Very nice close shave. Don't know if I'd use a NEW on a daily basis but for a two dayer it's one of the go to razors.

TABAC, oh dear TABAC where have you been!

Well, in the drawer all along I know, but it has not been winter before and I've tried all the others during autumn.

With this morning being cold and wet I decided it was time, time for the TABAC.

This stuff is magnificent! Seriously between this in winter and Proraso in summer do we NEED any other products?

Not really I guess. But then I think that about every bit of equipment when I'm using it.

Yeah, you are probably right!

A bit of a change for me today and two new products.

I've just moved house, and finding everything was not as easy as it should have been. So tonight i just used whatever I found first, and today that was:

EJ89
FS Finest
Supermax Ultimate Menthol with tea tree, aloe vera and vitamin e (a $1.50 purchase in Singapore)
Floid vigoroso AS
and finally the Voskhod blade got a look in.

Not a great shave. The smell of the Supermax (no it is not a womans sanitary product Jugv2) was a bit meh, and I wasn't paying attention when lathering (I had forgotten to shake the brush out after wetting it), so didn't get the best lather.

The first couple of swipes with the razor didn't seem to do much to my 5 day beard, but after a slight angle change it got better.

I'll try both again before passing judgement, as the failures tonight were obviously my own.

I tried a GBE in a slim the other day. Afterwards it looked like I hadn't shaved (as I have fairly light skin but dark dark hair, so there was a dark beard showing under the skin homer simpson style straight after the shave), looked worse than was it was though, OK shave but nothing near SE shave quality.

Yesterday switched razor to a red tip SS. Shave was way way better, looked shaved, felt shaved. Mind you GBEs can be like this. They feel like nothing special on the first or second shave, but they have been the only DE blade I know that get better, and last for 6 shaves. Feels weird though, a SE can rip you to shreds and you'll know it, a DE will and you find out later, much later sometimes.
But anyway, fun times with a slim, a red tip, a GBE, the semogue SOC and MFW

Life, I am happy to say has returned to normal (or as close as I can get these days).

After my last episode, where the water turned red and the air turned blue, I decided to rest a few days and see, if over a little bit of time I could establish what went wrong. Of course that little bit of time meant that by last night I had a good face full of hair to contend with again.
However I felt that my contemplation time had been well spent and I promised myself I would not recreate the scenes of blood and gore from the previous shave.
So lathered up with my new tub of Tabac, warmed up the blade in the Bullet Tip and away I went. So good I did a second pass with the Bullet Tip and then tidied up some corners with the Slim.
The secret was (as SE shavers will know) this time I let the razor and blade do the work. In the previous shave I was tired, feeling cranky so I was pulling the razor through the beard and of course it bit me. Lesson learned perfect shave, just need to get some AS to complete the performance.
Still on topic, the Tabac was nice but I wasnt overwhelmed. Will try the Speick stick next and see what happens with that. After all it comes recommended by a man with one razor and one blade so it must have something going for it.

..........Still on topic, the Tabac was nice but I wasnt overwhelmed..........

That's just silly talk. The blood loss is obviously still affecting your senses.

Anyhooo...coupla shaves:

Wee Scot
Tabac (wickedly awesome stuff) and La Toja
Fat handled NEW with Shark on Nos 2 and 3

Both on two day growths. Ideal for a NEW. Back to SE after this I think.

Been enjoying the mwf for a while now.
Today warm water, mwf, boar, gilette DE with 7oc yellow

I have found that if I don't have a full days growth, the gillette is fabulous to shave with. I guess if my beard grew just a bit slower, or days were 18 hours long this would be a fine everyday razor for me. If I have 24 hours or more between shaves, I have to go to SE or R41.

This is what I think is happening: The gillette in combo with the lather is simply gliding/floating over the beard when doing WTG. Then causing me hassles when trying to look shaved by forcing me to be rougher when going X and ATG. But, when the hairs are very short the blade can make contact and perform a functional WTG.

Bodge, I think it is more of a shaving angle problem. I would agree that getting a decent WTG pass when your beard has a few days growth is an issue as I experience it too - but I am talking more 3 or 4 days worth of growth, having this problem with a mere 24 hours worth of growth seems quite amazing to me. You must be able to grow a Gandalf-like beard in a month!

An open comb is more agressive and so it really hits the mark - which I can see by your R41 comment. It allows the hair to stand up and be cut, rather than the closed comb pushing down the hairs.

I also love the GSB (that's Gillette Silver Blues for the uninitiated) blades in a "I haven't shaved for nearly a week" situation. Others will say that Feathers are good for it too. Sharpness is key here, you want the sharpest blades that you have.

I will say it - Yellows aren't the sharpest in the Gillette DE blade range, but are probably a decent daily. I really can't see much difference between them and the Astra SP. I would definitely suggest trying the 7OC Blacks which are a step up from the Yellows in sharpness, and the Czech Blues (I tried them via Glenos, they are awesomely sharp blades) are sharper again. The next stop is the Silver Blues.

"I think it is more of a shaving angle problem" - You may be right. I have been wrong about many shaving issues.

and in case you didn't see it on a previous page, since it was an edit, I have a Q for you

Is there a thread where you have reviewed any/all your blades? I found your review system but not actual reviews.

If I haven't shaved in two days, I really need an open comb or SE as well.
Like monster said a solid safety bar DE probably pushes the stubble down so it doesn't cut properly.
Though strange a SE works even if it's not the open comb version, that's probably due to the thickness of the blade though.

Couple of shaves for me, switched to Tabac with the colder weather, and the horsey brush. I'm starting to match brushes with soaps and the horsey definitely is the best for tabac. It's scritchy tips pick the soap up really well, and even though it's a small brush, it lathers up and holds heaps of lather in it, more than the boars I have anyway.
Still using the GBE blade and red tip, I'll finish that combo off today I think and go back to SE.

Taking one for the team tonight since there's been no shave talk here.
Going with the horsey brush, tabac, (vie long horse hair brush and tabac just works oh so well!), GEM pat 1900 lather catcher and new GEM coated SS blade...

I've been very disappointed with this week of shaving.

I have been using Wilkinson Sword blades someone sent me, and it feels like I'm barely shaving.

Wilkinson Sword blade
Proraso soap
Boar brush
Floid AS

Very ordinary shave, I am convinced it's the blade.

Cant be the wonderful Indian Wilkinsons I was handing out - best DE blade I have ever used.
Of course YMMV.
