Been a while since I loaded a PSS. Hot damn! Now I remember why I bought a couple hundred. Lazy two pass shave but was smooth as buttah. Nice way to relax into the Monday holiday.

Always lovely when it really lathers up. I find it runs best for me when I shampoo/handwash out the brush and let dry. Also, if the water goes a bit softer - and I notice from the taste of water from the tap - then yeah I get a better lather too.

Aah, yeah the spoiler does an amazing job. And yes, sometimes I re-lather at the end of the second pass and rinse off. Kind of an 'exfoliation pass'. :laugh:

Lather was crappy today - thin and basically not enough product. Added a bit more and it bloomed to life.

Ripped off the ridiculous 'low bulb' handle on it and used the 5" Stainless handle supplied with the Open Comb. It is a work of art, amazing knurling on it, and thickness around the diameter of a Slim handle. Feels oh-so-right in the hand, weight balance is near perfect. I did ask Al @ Pureman if I could post some photos but he would prefer not as they are prototype/manufacturing samples. It's a shame as it is one sexy looking creation now!

Great shave, although noticeable stubble 18 hours later. I am considering putting a Spoiler in this combo next for shits and giggles. And I am almost at the point of asking if I can purchase one of these 5" handles to join to my DE86. It was that good to hold.

On a related note, Al was good enough to send some samplers through. I have T&H West Indian Limes SC, T&H 1805 AS Balm, and Jack Black Supreme Cream w/ Macadamia Nut Oil & Soy. Watch for these reviews coming soon!!!

So you taste the water and on that basis decide to use MWF? You've taken shaving to a new level. By the way can't imagine water quality varying that much. Strange place Campsie! I found MWF to have a really nice scent and the lather was OK but nothing to write home about. Maybe water quality in Perth is consistently hard.

No, I can just correlate the performance of the soap against the 'taste' of the water. Having lived in a very hard water area - mainly a borefield out of limestone, later supplemented with water from the local river in varying percentages - I know and take notice when it changes.

Sydney water does vary a bit, not by a great deal. They seem to treat it harder after periods of rain, extra chlorination and possibly a filtration through limestone sand which pushes the hardness up. When this happens I notice MWF has more issues lathering. I just give the puck another couple of scrubs and it comes to life.

Yes it does vary - but not as much as CBR water seems to. They REALLY beat it after storm events so to drink tap water you are best pouring the glass then letting the chlorine burn off for a minute or two. Reports on Sydney Water can be found here if you are really interested.
 
Here it tends to vary from suburb to suburb. We've got a drinking water filter in the house which does make a huge difference.
 
Used a new razor today - the mighty Krona.

Proraso cream
Semogue LE Boar
Jack Black Signature Black Edition AS

I felt that with this blade/razor combo I really had to apply some pressure to get it to shave well, and even then I am left with stubble.

The blade might be the key here so tomorrow I will pop in something a bit sharper, maybe an Astra or a Personna Red and see how it goes.

The razor itself has a good length and weight to it, I just didn't feel it exposed enough of the blade to the skin.
 
I would have to agree.

Today I tried a new Bleue and had a very similar result to yesterday.

3 passes and I went in with a lot more pressure too.

I will go an Astra tomorrow.

Had a haircut on Sunday, great shave today. I must be looking almost as good as PJ!

Did someone say the proraso splash is discontinued or recipe changed? Let me know as I may have to go into a buying frenzy ala YKW before the old stock is gone.

Have to admit that it was an effortless, very close shave without any razor burn. Not sure if this is entirely due to the blade as I've just come off a spell of SE which is a different beast altogether. I'm sure I generally get the same result using a Shark blade but it appears to be a lot easier. Pity about the pesky glue spots but it's forgiveable.

It's pretty much the same. The menthol isn't as intense, but lasts a bit longer, and one of the moisturising ingredients has been dropped. None of which affects it much, if at all.
 
Mixed it up a bit today:

  • Merkur HD w/ Astra SP
  • GEM Featherweight with GEM stainless SE blade
  • Blobby Foo
  • TOBS Avocado
  • Barclay Crockers Dominican Bay Rum Lime Aftershave
  • Nivea Sensitive balm

Used the Featherweight for my first run at SE shaving on my cheeks and around my lips, then switched back to the 34C with the Astra SP. I'm expecting to be a little sore tomorrow because I deliberately went for a really close shave to try and gauge my improvement since the beginning. I'm gunna make a thread tomorrow about the GEM's first run and a few other things, this was a really good shave though.

Thanks to Mark for sending the Featherweight with the blades too, I'm gunna do a comparison with a Micromatic next shave.

How does it smell on the skin? Is it strong of rum or lime?

Haha yeah, I just wrote down the label because I've never heard of it. I've just been going through the samples I have and thought the combo sounded interesting. It's pretty unremarkable, way more dominant on the bay rum side than the lime. Rum with a hint of citrus is the lingering scent, but it wasn't overly powerful. It's an interesting thought, but in practice, I doubt there was any significant advantage over a plain bay rum because the citrus doesn't last as a scene. It might have been slightly more easy and cooling on the skin, but the effect was so marginal that it wasn't worth the bother. I wouldn't actively recommend it to anyone, but for a sample, it was okay and worth trying.

Mark has unknowingly done my wallet a grievous injury, I tried the TOBS Avocado in a sampler he sent with the GEM. I loved it! While I didn't find the scent to be particularly noticeable, I found it really easy to whip up a great lather. Comparing with the Proraso green cream, it's left my skin feeling a bit more moisturised and gave me a bit more protection and cushioning against the blade. I used a bit more product than usual though, I think I've been a bit stingy in the past and it's resulted in a thin and watery consistency. Much better this time, but I'm gunna have to pick up a tub now though.

Something interesting happened tonight too. I went to watch Melbourne Victory vs Heart at the soccer tonight, my mate's dad got Medallion Club seats and was good enough to pass them on for free. I figured it'd be nice to see inside a private area, and if I'm gunna watch soccer I might as well do it with some class. One of my mates commented on the rum scent inside and then asked about my shaving habits, commenting that him and his missus had noticed a positive change in my skin. It's nice that the swap from the Mach 3 has had a noticeable effect that people around me have picked up on, it's the first time that's happened for me outside of my family so far. He's intrigued by the notion of wetshaving too, so I'll point him in this direction if he expresses any more interest.
 
The change in skin is something I've seen in two mates and myself, since starting wet shaving.
It highlights how bad the canned goop really is for you.

At 46 and only DE shaving for the past 3 (?) years my skin was probably too far gone - tough as old leather - for most people to notice but my wife certainly did and commented on the difference when I started.

I really wonder about the Gillette 'research' on how good the carts are...
 
The current Gillette Gel cans are surfactant based, so it's pretty much like lathering with Morning Fresh dishwashing liquid. And you know what happens to your hands with that stuff.

Anyway, I tried a new cream today - T&H West Indian Limes. Freaking amazingly good stuff - if Jermyn lathers by waving a brush in it's general direction, then the T&H lathers better just by looking at it. Insanely good cushion and glide.

Great shave, the T&H really was nice. Finished off with T&H 1805 Balm, excellent soothing properties and man that scent is good. Will be getting a full tub of one of the T&H creams now, just need to decide which one.

Wow... The P.160 lathers like crazy, great stuff.

Spoiler is on shave 4, feels like its on it's last legs, I will push it for one more shave and see how it goes.

Anyway had a lazy 3 pass shave was pretty damn good.

Finished up with Witch Hazel and some Nivea balm.

Replaced the blade, and decided I'd try corking it to see what happens. Actually felt a bit better around my neck where the hair goes all tardo (that's a technical term, btw. Just run with it). Now to see how this blade lasts after 3 shaves. Though I find I only have to do two passes with each shave, so that might help extend the life back out to a blade a week.
