Shave of the day

Which Micromatic have you got?

Unsure about specific model names, but it's open comb and looks like this but with some plating loss and a couple of scratches:

GEM_Micromatic_01_01.jpg

P.160 Morbido
Smoggie 830
Merkur "34C"
Permasharp Sooper (4)
Prorasioioio Splash

Permasharp has another shave or two in it easily. The P.160 is very easy to work with...I'm even coming around to the smell

Tabac cream
Wee Scot
7O'Clock
Astra

It's been a while since I used one of these and a very nice smooth shave. Maybe not as sharp as a Gillette Plat but I don't think I can notice any difference with a Shark to be honest. Unfortunately again my fouree in to blades is leaving me with a much of a muchness conclusion. Should try the Spoiler, Gods gift to blades from what I've read, to see if this is reasonable.

You're brave. That's the Open Comb Micromatic. OCMM or MMOC or whatever. Found it seriously aggressive and used it maybe for half a pass on one or two occassions. Mark now owns it. The other two MM models, the Clog Pruf and the Bullet Tip (or sometimes called the Flying Wing for reasons nobody really knows) are aggro enough in my opinion. My favorite MM is the Bullet Tip followed closely by the Clog Pruf. The Featherweight is always my go to with a new blade.

Yep I do own it. Up there with the R41 in terms of an aggro razor IMHO

Cella and Super Iridium.

These are pretty good, a lot better than most blades I've dabbled with. I'm guessing they're not the fabled original, but a re-launch or something? Even so, the G&C price on them is ok. Depends what the postage would be, but I'd grab 50+ of these.

Interesting to hear that both yourself and Mark rate it as being quite aggressive, I didn't really feel like that was the case but I don't have much experience for comparison. I'll give the Featherweight another go tomorrow and see if I can get it happening. How do these Gem blades rate in terms of sharpness compared to a Feather DE blade?

This is the combo I used while in the UK for two weeks, shaving every second day:

Arko stick
Gillette Superspeed Red Tip
Astra SP
bestshave #6 brush

Overall a great package- good shaves every time. The Arko is just nuts- very easy to face lather well with this stuff.
The #6 brush is good for the price, but it doesn't compare to my other brand name brushes. Doesn't seem to have that many bristles, and each shave I'd find at least one bristle had come off the brush during use. Works fine though, and for $2.50 I can't complain!
The Red Tip and the Astras make for a good combo- smooth, consistent shaves without any nicks or irritation.

Looking through my modest (in comparison to the rest of you) stash of blades tonight I came to the realisation that I haven't actually tried that many of them out.

Derby's, Lord's, Sharks, Voskhods, Rapira, Personna (can't remember which), Astra have all been tried and tested, but tonight i noticed just how many more different blades I have that I just hadn't got around to trying yet.

So tonight I grabbed the first unopen packet that came to hand, and tried them out: Gillette 7o'clock super plats, and one of the creams I got YKW a while back.

No idea what the cream is, and searching through my threads here and YKW I can't find it, but it was supposed to be a nice one. Found the thread -
Tabula Rasa
. Somehow it seems to have split if that is possible? There is a distinct orange/red liquid lying on top of the cream. Almost put me off using it, but I ended up just scraping cream off the lid and had a reasonable shave.

Is it normal for this to happen?

Creams quite often do have period stipulated by the maker in which they're best used.....from memory I was ready that Trumpers state a year....but being a soft soap they'd be a bit more vulnerable. Time/age aside the heat/humidity up your way might have got to them......alternatively with many artisan products on the market this type of thing could just be liable to happen ....perhaps you could reincorporate the oil by mixing back in as I'd say it'd be best it goes back into the cream.

Haha another reason where I strictly stick with hard soaps. ;-)

  • Pureman OpenComb Prototype/PreProduction
  • Fresh GBE
  • TOBS Jermyn
  • Smoggie 730HD as usual
  • Truefitt & Hill 1805 ASB sampler (courtesy Pureman)

Amazing shave..... simply amazing. Mowed down 4 days worth of growth in one pass. Second pass I am mostly BBS.

Did nick myself on a bump/zit, but only a weeper and no blood. The 1805 sorted it out quick smart - it's great stuff.

Massively impressed with the razor. I'm not sure on the head but I think it is a Merkur 25, coupled with a long custom SS handle. Great knurling in it, you will never lose grip.

I am considering asking Pureman to sell me one of these... even if they are a prototype.

If it's RazoRock (the Aqui Di Parma copy), which is the consistency of thick glue, then yes. It's a very oily and separates easily when not used for a while. Just mix it back up.

Never had a soap or cream go bad/off Nick. Even soft soap is just soap, it can't really change much. It might lose most of its scent though. My first tube of Proraso and TOBS lasted over 2 years ( I kept buying stuff...) and were still as good as the day they were bought. The Proraso did start to firm up a bit in the tube, but was otherwise fine. Now so many manufacturers have removed parabens, we may need to check how products go after 12-18 months

All cosmetics have a Period After Opening (PAO) date on them in months. For info see wikipedia here.

I've never heard of a soap going off. I don't believe there are bacteria that can live in that mix. What you'll get is basically an age related chemical/physical process which will lead to hardening and/or change of colour. Don't know how or if it will affect the performance and I doubt the manufacturers know either which is why they put a use by date on their products.

I think we all kind of agree, but just FTR I never said nor implied that a soap/cream would go off/bad. Rather just that I'd heard that atleast a couple of prominent cream makers had stated some type of time period that products should be used within a certain period for best results.

Here's exactly what I was referring to from 'The Superior Shave's shaving soap/cream page:
The biggest difference between most ~same soap/creams to me's the soaps' far superior shelf life, no matter what a company's line is about that subject (here Trumper gives 12mos. for both, and while I'd agree their creams definitely dry up and stop working well within that year, I'd easily use their soap long after that ).

Personally I've no idea about the specific products as I've never used them other than a few samplers and my experience with creams is very limited as I tend to dislike them.

I haven't had a cream hanging around long enough for it to go past it's PAO. Always impressed with the Superior Shave website. Very shaver orientated. Another recently banned vendor over at YKW. Apparently it's hard for some vendors to be simultaneously shaver/customer and moderator orientated. At least at YKW. Don't know why I keep peeping over there. Must be some sort of goullish thing. If you wish to see the latest parade of flag waving, card carrying sycophants, find the Martin de Candre thread posted by Mr YKW himself.

I have managed to stay away for a long time, but I did cave one thread a while back and registered. Didn't take long for the ban stick to come out. Perhaps they didn't like my new username?

Let me guess.....Grohlsamuthafucka?......Marcosucks?........Softsoapsoftc..k? I'm sure it was your old IP address rather than your new username that got you banned. Kudos for getting banned twice.
