Shoebox want $25 min order to ship anything OS. Postage was at least another 10 IIRC. So for 1 brush I didn't bother. I'd jump in and split postage if that makes it worthwhile.

Conns would be a better bet for one offs though.

Conns want $5.61 for shipping two brushes. Shoebox doesn't even come close. The brushes are also nearly 50% more.

Looks like Mustafas might have a few to choose from.

Shoebox replied. Shipping is $12 for one brush, maybe 15-16 shipping total for 2,3 or 4 brushes, depends on weight.
So it seems they are interested. It's $10.79 for the 10019, plus shipping.
Will wait and see if connaught are willing to get the brushes as a special order...

Drubbing, the 1305 and similar smogs do what they are supposed to do, be a soft boar cheaper than useless cheap badgers. I think that was smogs aim. I've got cheap badgers that cost more and can't do what the 1305 does, and have gone floppy. I think the 1305 is not the epitome of a boar, but just a cheap boar for people that prefer the feel of a small badger but don't want to spend the money for one.

That's what I've been saying for quite a while now. Obviously no one reads my extensive, thoroughly researched, and highly informative articles.

As to the dye thing PJ brings up, I've only one Omega that's dyed and it is definitely moppy topped, and different in feel to the others. But all other Omega design and build stops it from being a Smog. I've had a couple of non dyed Smogs and they still work and feel like Smogs.

Of course there is the 10275

Total Height: 95 mm
Loft: 47 mm
Knot: 22 mm

I've got one - it's the moppy top. Still no one listening to a word I say. It's like I'm taking crazy pills.

Ahhh, of course, dyed, therefore moppy top.

So the question remains - what is a good reasonably priced boar for hard soaps? I probably should have read this somewhere but haven't!

Now, now Mark. Don't take a few casual observations and unfounded theories as the gospel truth.

This is all too hard - razors are MUCH easier!

Well what do you like? Did you like the 1305 with it's 'moppy top', want something bigger or the same size?
If you like a moppy top boar brush then now you know which omega also has a moppy top.
If you want something with more backbone and scrubbiness then look at ones similar to the 10019 I mentioned.

If you want something bigger, then go for the ones mentioned before.

No it's not. A boar's a boar's a boar. Anything with a 22-24mm knot and a 50mm loft will work just fine. If you want it taller you'll need a 24-26mm knot. Even if it's a bit tough and scritchy to start with they continually get better with age and usage. Any Omega with those specs will be fine. Don't worry about the imitation badger staining. I don't like the look of them but that's just me. That's why I've always ended up el-cheapo boars. And in my experience they all turn out just fine. If you face lather go for a smaller one if you bowl lather get the 48. Better still, get one of each. Saw my old 48 the other day. All the tips have split and the knot looks like silk. I almost secretly slipped it in my pocket while the son wasn't looking.

Silky is probably the best desription for my Semogue 830. It's been just over a year of use and its too soft for creams now. It still works well on soap though.

Of course - you can't go wrong with 200+. Everyone's a winner. You don't really need any more than 100 though...

Any of the Omega boars mentioned thus far would be great. The 10275 is nice and stumpy in a moppy way. My own pick would be the 10005 (23/55) from Connaught - an excellent hard soap brush. About $11.

Basically, if it's an Omega and around 22/55 you can't go wrong, pick one you like. Just check other sites for sizing, Connaughts are often wrong.

Back on topic. Just love saying that.

TGN best brush
Tabac cream
Damaskeene with GEM PTFE on No 1.

Face rape! Now I know why I started looking for other SE razors. I am trying to compare this to a standard 1912 and can't really tell the difference. However the first shave with a new GEM blade has the potential to do this to me. My next shave is a new blade in a 1912 to see if I get the same result. Probaby will. Stupid bloody past time this shaving. Who got me interested in it? Oh yeah I remember...Drubbing of course.

Are you holding the 1912 at an angle where the head is pretty much touching your face?

Back off topic, F1 red flagged due to rain :(

I will be paying a bit more attention to that. It's not as if I haven't used a 1912 before I just don't use them enough I guess. What I can say is that they're not very forgiving. But it coud be a first shave with a new blade thing with a razor I haven't used with a new blade for ages. By the way had a go with a new blade in a standard 1912 with a very similar result.

Back to F1.

If course we should also check out Maguires - a vendor here - lots of Omega boars!

Well if you don't pretty much have the razor head on your face, you aren't going to tell the difference between a 1912 and a damaskeene anyway, as the difference is the shape/angle of the head.
Generally, the closer the head is to your skin, the smoother the shave. You only lift it off a little bit if you feel it's not shaving aggressively enough, to much off though, means cutting into the skin. For easily repeatable SE results, find the razor that does the job with the head on the skin and no thought needed.
